'New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gave us that when she literally laughed off a movement she had become the poster girl for live on telly. It was in the midst of an ABC News discussion on the excesses of 2020 progressives earlier this month that she shared a saying from a colleague: “Woke 1 was crazy!”'

Seems a significant shift.

‘Woke’ was a disaster – even the Left admits it

Key liberal figures like AOC may distance themselves from the movement, but their punitive orthodoxy had a chilling effect on free speech

She is a traitorous cow and the internet of women will not forget how much damage she did, however hard she tinkly laughs.

Ocasio-Cortez’s tone is important – masterful, from a political perspective. It’s the indulgent tone of a woman pointing to a 50-year-old picture of herself in stirrup leggings and a batwing jumper. “Wasn’t Eighties fashion crazy!”

Only we’re not talking about statement sleeves here. We’re not talking about a garment you can shrug off and giggle at retrospectively. (Just six years ago, this woman wanted to defund the police). No, we’re talking about a punitive orthodoxy that had a chilling effect on free speech, that encouraged Medieval-style public shamings and cancellations and robbed people of their livelihoods.

We’re talking about a dangerous dogma that – in allowing ideology to outrun evidence in children’s medicine, of all places – encouraged experimentation on six-year-olds. It wilfully put girls and women in danger, made a mockery of women’s sport, prioritised symbolic gestures over practical solutions and turned competitive victimhood into a national sport'

To me, AOC just seems startlingly fake. Like, not even a moderately good actor.

On her Insta, she is sharing a lot of stuff about freezing her eggs.

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5027397-egg-freezing-clinics-give-misleading-information

I'll just leave this quote from Robert Winston here (my bold):

'It so happens that, as a kind of hobby, I regularly submit a Written Question—about every three years—to find out the results of egg freezing in the United Kingdom compared to those internationally. According to the latest results from the five years up to the pandemic, 75,958 eggs were subjected to thawing after freezing. Of these—I will round up the figures for speed—13,000 thawed, 11,400 were fertilised, 7,257 produced an embryo, 1,695 were considered suitable for an embryo transfer, 288 of the women got pregnant after transfer, 205 gave birth, and 80 pregnancies were lost as a result of miscarriage. In spite of the HFEA saying on its website that the effects are improving, when you look at these figures in detail you see that they are not.

Only last week, on BBC radio, a well-known individual who was a senior member of the HFEA said that the success rate of egg freezing is 18%. It is nothing like that. In fact, according to the figures I have just given the House, less than 0.2% of eggs that are subjected to thawing result in a live birth, and only 1.7% of eggs that are fertilised become a baby. Women do not want miscarriages, and if there is any violence that you can talk about, having a miscarriage is certainly one of them. It is really quite shocking that this goes on and that this kind of information is bandied around in this way. It is not acceptable, and it needs to be done much more carefully by the Government, because the Government are responsible for the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority. It needs to make certain that the website says what the success rate is. It does not say what the success rate is; it just says it is improving.

Moreover, the website says that egg freezing is completely safe. How can we say that? It has been going for only 20 years, and it will be a long time before these children can be followed up as adults. It probably is safe but we do not know that. The high miscarriage rate is one certain concern that I have. Clinics are telling patients—I hear this again and again—that if you come to the clinic you have a 60% chance of having your eggs frozen, with a successful baby afterwards. This is a scandal, and it needs to be halted and taken under control."'

It is such a shame re Cortez because I really like her on many levels.

She has had many a good interaction with establishment politicians, and had many a good moment in Me Too.

She seemed to have been swept up in it.

I think the impact of Woke in America is bigger, and somewhat worse than here, given their history. I also think that they are still "in it" to a degree as it seems very firmly entrenched in the two political parties (how they only have two parties is beyond me!).

ArabellaScott · Yesterday 14:32

My understanding is US politics is so polarised that most effort is expended on differentiating one side from the other.

Admittedly, this is partial.

But it is interesting to see Dems rolling back from 'woke'.

No, please, singthing, tell us what you really think😁

I'm with you on this. Shameless reverse ferreting. I felt really angry when I saw this - like she thinks the damage that her and her fellow-'allies' did can be laughed off as a youthful indiscretion.

But it also makes you wonder what other policies she was elected on will be laughed off as Woke 1.0.

Her green policy - maybe she'll laugh off her commitment to decarbonisation? net zero by 2030?

What about opposing the criminalisation of sex work? 'Ending verbal assaults against women'?

Was she being Woke1.0 crazy every time her website refers to trans women as women?

Her voters deserve to know what will be consigned to the bin of Woke 1.0 next.

I can barely type that sentence without my toes damn near snapping off out of sheer embarrassment.

Shortshriftandlethal · Yesterday 15:35

I suspect she is just referring to the 'De-Fund The Police' and 'close all prisons' side of things.

Shortshriftandlethal · Yesterday 15:38

What exacty does she regret?

https://www.sanjuandailystar.com/post/a-question-for-the-formerly-woke-what-exactly-do-you-regret

If you can dismiss it so casually now — all the defunding and abolishing, the BIPOCing and Latinxing, the canceling and decentering and my truthing — how much of it did you truly believe at the time? How much was conviction, how much was a pose, how much was groupthink, how much was fear?

If you did believe it, jettisoning it now should take something more than a sheepish grin. If you didn’t believe it and yet declared it with such passion, with such pretensions to moral clarity, with such disdain for contrary perspectives, then the least you can do now is acknowledge that dissonance. You should explain the shift, not just explain it away.

A question for the formerly woke: What exactly do you regret?

And a damned shame too
America be no longer united,
Not that it ever really was

nauticant · Yesterday 16:14

My reading between the lines is that US progressives have shifted their agenda and Woke 2 is coming (in the form of the Democratic Socialists of America) and this time they're hoping to win the game having learned from their mistakes.

teawamutu · Yesterday 16:16

She argued passionately for "Sarah" (Tim) McBride to be allowed into the Ladies in Congress (keeping him out was "gross", she said) and certainly hasn't disavowed boys in girls' sports.

Hope she gets some nice direct questions to pin it all down.

nauticant · Yesterday 16:19

One thing to understand about AOC and many of the newer prominent figures of the US Left is that it's important to look behind their self-mythologising and see that for all their claims of a poor/blue collar upbringing many of them come from the comfortable middle class if not the privileged wealthy.

The extreme 'woke' left, the 'woke' right…I would say two sides of the same coin but only one of them is targeting people with FBI investigations, weaponising law fare, using billionaire funds to primary congressional dissenters, sacking university leaders for not being 'pro Israel' enough & deporting people for free speech.

And holding AOC responsible for the extreme fringe of the left smells like more political targeting than any concern about freedom of speech.

This was also my immediate thought. This was only a few years ago. Is she really that much a victim of fashions and fads? Is that how poorly founded her ideas are?

Mycatisfab · Yesterday 22:51

We're going to have to be gracious about it , otherwise they'll be trading vitriol from the trans activists for scorn from us. It does grate , cos any politician who said TWAW, was either a lying coward, stupid or venal .

I’m not sure the Dems are rolling back from woke? At least, many younger Republicans ones are openly more ‘socialist’ but not sure what that really means to them. @nauticant is this what you mean by democratic socialists? God help America if it means those jazz hand waving conference goers.

2021x · Today 04:01

For every A'OC snowflake "transwomen are women" moment, there are right-wing meltdowns about Rachel Zegler saying that it is wrong to have a story about a 14-year-old girl being seen as a hero for waiting for a man to save her.

A'OC - Like DJT cares only about herself and will just use and discard any cause that boosts her profile.

The scenario you describe in the United States came about because of extreme over-reach and general ludicrousness emanating from the what is now termed the american 'progressive' 'Left'. That Kamala Harris ran for president vowing that the state would pay for the 'gender transitions' of violent men in U.S prisons and then place them in womens jails. That professors at numerous U.S universities were targeted and hounded for years ( Peter Boghassian, for exampel). That Democrat senators claimed that "no-one could know what a woman was" without a medical degree ( and even those with medical degrees claimed not to know either)

That Trump has simply reversed the gears doesn't say anything meaningful about that fact, nor does it point to the way forward.

Shortshriftandlethal · Today 09:41

Do we remember that guy employed by the Democrat government who claimed a 'non-binary' identity and who stole women's suitcases at airports in order to wear the contents?

I suspect they are riding the Zhoran Mamdani gravy train becaue it has had results in New York city. He focuses on more of an economic socialism than a 'woke' cultural agenda.

Americans don't really have a history or foundation in the sorts of socialist politics which have been around in Europe for a long time. They don't really get it. Instead they invented Intersectionalism and Critical Race Theory and this became the progressive wokism we all know and love 😆
