Brilliant article and even more brilliant to see it published in the guardian. Thank you for sharing OP

spannasaurus · 01/06/2026 13:53

I did not expect that from the Guardian

BridgetPhillipsonIsACowardlyJobsworth · 01/06/2026 13:55

Headline: The Guardian decides that the wind is blowing that way ➡

Iwishihadariver · 01/06/2026 13:58

What a sensible article and so good to see it clearly said that it is not just about toilets. People need to hear all the strong arguments for single sex exceptions for refuges, prisons, hospital wards, personal social care at home, lesbian groups, changing rooms etc. Thanks fir the share OP.

BridgetPhillipsonIsACowardlyJobsworth · 01/06/2026 14:00

Bridget Phillipson, the women and equalities minister, said that avoiding any new "burden on business" was one of the reasons why the revised guidance has taken more than a year to arrive.

Yeah, sure, Bridge. You just ran out of road and excuses.

Columbidae · 01/06/2026 14:02

Really good article, thanks OP.

Wow. The article even included some facts that 'back up the gender critical view'. 💚💜

Binglebong · 01/06/2026 14:04

Scary!

lanadelgrey · 01/06/2026 14:05

Susanna Rustin has written from sex realist point of view before and spoken at WPUK and FiLiA events

'Mercy, it's the revolution!'😁

Guardian gets it right
murasaki · 01/06/2026 14:07

Good article. This bit in particular.

'Biological drives need not come into it. The point is, first, that a gender transition – particularly one made later in life – cannot erase the previous person, and everything that went into shaping them. And second, that since there is no objective test of gender identity, there is also no failsafe way to distinguish a transgender woman from a man who wishes to access female spaces.'

I'm surprised to see it in the Guardian. Kath Viner must be on holiday...

PrettyDamnCosmic · 01/06/2026 14:07

Susanna Rustin has always been reliably GC.

SomersetBrie · 01/06/2026 14:07

Wow, I am shocked.

I read it quickly but am I right in thinking that this line
So far, Reform UK is the only party with a plan to repeal the Equality Act.

means that Reform are more of a threat to single spaces than how the law is looking at the moment?

KnottyAuty · 01/06/2026 14:08

Whaaat? Did something weird happen over half term thats caused a paradigm shift?

BridgetPhillipsonIsACowardlyJobsworth · 01/06/2026 14:12

Trans people also suffer from high rates of domestic abuse and need access to services.

I didn't see a reference for this in the article. Does anyone know if this is true?
(I mean a rate of 50% out of two people isn't really saying much, but if it's 20% out of 200,000 people, that's significant).

PrettyDamnCosmic · 01/06/2026 14:12

"And second, that since there is no objective test of gender identity, there is also no failsafe way to distinguish a transgender woman from a man who wishes to access female spaces." This is just calling all trans women rapists. This is literal blood libel and the Guardian is printing it.

The catastrophising is off the scale. literal blood libel LOL

Suella Braverman Tory turncoat & former Home Secretary says they will repeal the Equality Act on Day One of a Reform government.

Attacks on the exclusionary nature of such spaces by the trans rights movement are a key reason why gender-critical feminism exists.

I don't appreciate the way she has framed this. It never was about "trans rights." I was about trans wants.

But, I suppose, being in the Guardian, even that would have been a step too far.

unwashedanddazed · 01/06/2026 14:23

Blood libel, and on the first day of PRIDE! Oh my the wailing is loud today.

RoyalCorgi · 01/06/2026 14:27

I knew it was going to be Susanna Rustin. She's the lone (and presumably lonely) voice of sanity at the Guardian.

That's probably the same kind of Day One as the Day One on which Trump said he would end the war in Ukraine.

By day 1,001 it's obvious that they are not using 'Day One' to mean Day One.

Not just catastrophising but appropriation of a concept that is specific to Jewish persecution. Trans activists do this with the Holocaust too, of course. It's one of the most unpleasant aspects of trans activism - though there's plenty of competition for that title, of course.

Did you see the correction at the bottom? Someone has been naughty.

This article was amended on 1 June 2026. Owing to an error introduced during editing, an earlier version used the incorrect pronoun for the character Zee.
