Trans Green Party candidate with no British visa elected to Holyrood

Q Manivannan, who identifies as non-binary, was elected as an MSP on the Edinburgh & Lothians East list for the pro-independence Scottish Greens.

It was reported earlier this week that the former PhD student has appealed to colleagues for £2,089 of funding for a temporary graduate visa.

This would give the anthropologist and poet a further three years to work and live in the UK, picking up the taxpayer-funded MSP salary of £77,711.

Manivannan is said to have told colleagues this would help buy time to save up the £5,047 cost of applying for a global talent visa, the UK immigration category for promising individuals in specific sectors.

The self-described “queer Tamil immigrant” was only able to stand in the election after SNP ministers loosened the rules over who could be a Holyrood candidate.

p.s. I was here when the threads changed. If I remember, it was feminist debaters being fed up of the focus being predominantly on trans issues that meant a feminists wanted a separate board for trans issues.

There's a typo in your post, so for clarity, it was the posters who didn't want to discuss trans issues who argued for the split. (I'm not sure if you were saying the same or the opposite due to the typo in your post.)

But the board that was set up is dead. It has very few threads and posts. Would that not suggest a lot of feminists actually do believe the trans issue is importsnt. Otherwise this board with be dead and the other would be very busy?

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 13/05/2026 13:24

@highame I didn't say you were pro green, just that you would make a very good green.

And being thought of as a Reform supporter still not an insult.

Part of the issue is that the list system means no one actually voted for him as a candidate, he was added to a list by the Greens and people voted Green, not for Q (or Duane, or the lunatic Maggie Chapman).

I’ve got to say, this whole debacle has opened my eyes to a glaring disadvantage of PR as a voting system in the modern age of identity politics, and I’m beginning to view FPTP as a better option.

That particular form of PR is deeply flawed. The Irish use STV, which is much better.

This may have already been mentioned on the thread but sharing just in case. Two elected Green Party councillors (one in Hackney and one in Camden) have been disqualified because they are teachers working in local maintained schools. The council will have to meet the costs of by-elections to select eligible candidates.

LA Teaching contracts make it very clear that you can’t be local councillors and it's simple incompetence that the Green Party didn’t screen their candidates.

Those teachers clearly self-identify as being transeligible candidates. How bigoted and didaskalophobic to claim that transeligible candidates aren't eligible candidates!

Seriously, I suspect that Greens are collectively lacking in the Security Mindset. They keep acting like they assume that people are truthful and honest and don't forget to pay their council tax, when in fact people lie and steal and forget to do stuff and that's why due diligence exists.

Whaaaaaat??? Nothing would make me sign up to Twitter, but this does actually tempt me. Could you possibly post more screenshots?

Isn’t believing in evolution usually a key tribal marker against MAGA and fundamentalist Christian types? How has the thinking got so bendy that this flavour of loon also rejects evolution?

Well, it gets tricky, doesn't it?
Poor old Darwin was pale, male, stale and English; how could he possibly be right?

Ah sadly @SecretSquirrelLoo I'm also not on twitter, I managed to screenshot the wings post from my browser but I can't delve in further than that.

Ah wait I can see someone has posted a nitter link! Going to also have a peek :)

More proof the SGreens are barking mad...

But incredibly rude and disrespectful whilst coming across as completely narcissistic. Great look in someone representing a broad constituency.

Both authoritarian. And willing to engage in violence to achieve their aims. Not so much between them ultimately. Huge differences in wealth in communist Soviet Union despite the claims to ‘every man’ and all that.

SecretSquirrelLoo · 14/05/2026 09:26

Oh yes absolutely, but I didn’t expect evolution denial to be one of the issues they would horseshoe on.

Misogyny yes of course, anti-immunizations potentially. Evolution surprising.

That's what Polanski is advocating for, it's what the Greens mean by No Borders, everyone has the right to go where ever they want and get housing and a basic universal income where ever they are.

Ophir · 14/05/2026 15:16

If they want no borders, why are they for Scexit?

Namingbaba · 14/05/2026 16:52

The self-described “queer Tamil immigrant” was only able to stand in the election after SNP ministers loosened the rules over who could be a Holyrood candidate.

Why was their need to loosen the rules? Surely even people who don't care about immigration see an issue with this? What's wrong with only having citizens??? Someone here for a few years only on a student visa who can't work full time? That is madness. The greens are absolute loons. I say this as someone who used to be a member and would like to vote for a centre-left party.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 14/05/2026 16:55

Ophir · 14/05/2026 15:16

If they want no borders, why are they for Scexit?

They are different concepts:

  • Scexit: Scotland makes its own laws without Westminster's involvement.
  • No borders: people can move to and from Scotland at will.

I am not a fan of closed borders. Closed borders hasn't worked out well for North Korea and Myanmar. At the same time, we should bar people with serious criminal records from coming in. "No borders" would allow criminals in and that's not OK.

Namingbaba · 14/05/2026 17:14

WearyAuldWumman · 10/05/2026 23:59

The fact that this person is claiming to have a trans identity is irrelevant, in my opinion. However, I don't think that someone who is only in Scotland on a student visa should be able to vote on Scottish legislation.

I spent time abroad as a student, and I can't imagine having the conceit to stand for election in another country without first taking steps to secure citizenship.

I agree with this. It's not just about the paperwork but also fully understanding the country and people you've to represent. In reality it takes a long time to fully understand. I've lived abroad in countries. I just can't imagine having the arrogance to say I could full represent them after such a short time.

He doesn't intend to represent them, it's all about him, he's a Green it's about getting the power to rearrange the world to suit him. Those who vote Green are nuts.
