Zoe Garbett - Green mayor for Hackney

maltravers · 08/05/2026 16:54

What do we know about Zoe Garbett (Hackney’s new Green mayor) in the context of gender identity politics? I assume she must be full on TWAW or the Greens would have ex-communicated her/Walter Titty wouldn’t be seen with her, but is this correct?

I note she RTd an endorsement for the greens from the Muslim vote. They're getting heat from certain Corbyn aligned Muslim independent activists for that when they should have backed YP in say Newham

Not sure I understood as have a bad headache and your post seemed like code I haven't been briefed in!

But if YP is your party then dont think they are relevant to local council elections (or Mayoral ones) are they?

maltravers · 08/05/2026 18:22

Your Party and the Green Party will be slugging it out over who is the home of Right Think/bleed the rich/Red Guard/unbridled student politics, so it’s not too surprising I guess that Corbyn’s Muslims are giving hassle to the Green’s Muslim supporters. They both want to be the chosen party.

I'm wrong! Your Party has had condidates in some of the local elections.

Didn't realise. I thought they were still arguing with each other.

It looks as though the Greens will have a majority on Hackney council, too.

It'll be interesting watching what happens there.

I can't find a source to check where Your Party candidates were standing and how many votes they got.

I'd love to know.

Oh excellent Hmm. The very first sentence says, "In response to the recent UK Supreme Court ruling, I want to express my unequivocal support and solidarity with the trans community in London."

And the only time "woman"/"women" appears in this piece is to say, "As the Prime Minister publicly denies trans identities as he refutes his earlier statement from 2022 that “trans women are women”..."

"Trans", if you're interested, appears 18 times, along with the obligatory comments about "bigotry" and "hate".

IwantToRetire · 08/05/2026 18:36

Apparently Lewisham has also elected a Green Mayor.

AnticsNShenanigans · 08/05/2026 18:37

I say this as a lifelong Labour voter…Hackney council is as wacky as fuck over gender as it is. Could Green get any worse? Jesus.

Ta. I will try to work my way through their list to find the results.

In passing, one ward offers an excellent name for a band - Palfrey and The Delves.

As an ex Hackney resident, I'd say that many in Hackney thoroughly deserve a Green council (with apologies to all rational, responsible Hackney residents 😃)

I didn't know that my eyes could do a full backwards somersault.
I do now.

Is it just me that finds Zack Polanski even more terrifying than Nigel Farage?
Farage at least knows what a woman is, although he’d prefer us barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen rather than having full human rights. We might at least get our own toilets and changing rooms.
However I just can’t see this weird coalition of Muslims and LGBTQ+ holding together for very long, so hoping they have a nasty break up soon.

I think that totally misunderstands what is going on.

The main back bone of the "new" Greens are the (white) metropolitan elite who have a " conscience" about their privilege and want to be still be "trendy". This used to be Labour it cities, but is now the Greens.

They are probably all arts Graduates and can only afford to live in Hackney because mummy and daddy have helped them buy an overpriced flat. So of course as graduates they are all rainbow aligned.

The main Muslim population in Hackney is Turkish and Kurdish and dont share a political position.

IwantToRetire · 08/05/2026 20:54

Just seen this:

The Green Party has taken control of Hackney Council from Labour in a dramatic result in the 2026 local elections.

The Greens secured 29 seats, gaining overall control of the borough, while Labour fell to just eight seats, losing 27.

The Conservatives remain on five seats.

Hackney has long been a Labour-dominated inner London borough, but has become a major target for the Green Party in recent years.

The result reflects a significant shift in voter support, with the Greens capitalising on backing from younger and more progressive voters, particularly on issues such as housing, affordability, and the environment.

https://www.itv.com/news/2026-05-08/zo-garbett-who-is-the-green-partys-first-mayor-and-her-teenage-deputy

What are Garbett's priorities?
Garbett is considered to be more left-wing within the Green Party, and helped to found Greens Organise, which "seek[s] to build the left within the party" by providing political education, broadening political strategy and increasing democratic participation and activism by Green members.

She says she uses her personal experiences in her activism, writing in an interview with Bright Green in 2023: "Identifying as queer, I’ve worked to protect safe spaces for LGBTIQA+ communities and to ensure that LGBTIQA+ people see themselves reflected in local NHS campaigns."

When she was announced as the Green Party candidate for the 2024 London mayoral election, which she lost to Sadiq Khan, she said she would abolish fare zones on the London Underground, Overground and DLR, and instead implement a flat fee for travel.

She's bloody awful. Complete TRA. There was an awful video she posted at the time of the general election but unfortunately, I can't find a link. Google's not being my friend because it is just showing me videos and articles about the mayoral election.

I find them both pretty scary. One would repeal the Equality Act and remove the protection of sex discrimination, recognises that sex is real and might enforce single-sex spaces but along with it implicitly or explicitly impose gender stereotypes. The other would rewrite (actually or by word twisting) the Equality Act to remove the protection of sex discrimination and replace it with gender discrimination, with the consequent erosion of single-sex spaces and implied imposition of gender stereotypes.

in that excellent Venn diagram that I can never find when I need it, Polanski and Farage are both in different circles to each other, but are also both in a different circle to me and other GC people.
