Very proud to announce that SEENinHealth has published an interactive policy map on their website here:

https://seeninhealth.org/nhs-foi-map/

This is a huge milestone for the fabulous 40 or so mumsnetters who worked together to audit these NHS policies last year and "keep the receipts" which form the basis for this map. SEENinHealth have passed on their thanks to you all!

It is thought that there have been no single sex spaces in the NHS since 2009 despite public declarations to the contrary. The gender self ID policies on this map were in force in 2024-2025 and we found no evidence of any protected single sex spaces for staff or patients across the UK - over 300 Trusts!

We have been doing a follow up sample of FOI searches this month. The results are coming in but so far no Trusts have updated to lawful single sex spaces yet - all are waiting for EHRC guidance... the map will be updated in due course.

Please do use this data to help hold your elected representatives and NHS Trusts to account. And share with others. Sample letters and contact details are linked from the map page to make it easy to request that your Trust complies with the law.

SEENinHealth will be launching the map officially tomorrow so any help boosting their social media posts would be great thank you.

Thank you Knotty for your brilliant leadership in pulling this together and pushing out to the media and to all the contributors.

It's depressing reading though. So much for women's rights.

I'm wondering if a class action of patients of the NHS (which all women and girls in the UK are or will be at some point) for discrimination under EA2010 is a possibility. The body of evidence that in policy pretty much the entire NHS has put one PC above all others in direct breach of the EA2010 and the PSED is really stark. And they've done this for a long time - years. What's the point of these laws and duties if they're allowed to just completely ignore them and do the opposite?

Agree that the EIA are all bollocks too, so incompetent and a total failure to balance PCs or recognize known facts about risk and offending as well as sex-based differences in risk, offending and strength.

KnottyAuty · 16/04/2026 11:15

Just to say that the inspiration for the audit was Sandie Peggie. I stumbled on to her threads here by accident and made a rapid ascent up the mountain to peak! Such a brave woman!

If anyone is on Twix and is happy to do so, could you share the SEEN in Health tweets? The more eyes on this the better!

If it’s possible to be worse - many/most eliminated or tampered with the protected characteristics so women as a sex class were disappeared! Very few were able to accurately quote all 9 EA protected characteristics correctly. Shocking

Blimey Devon Partnership NHS Trust is wild!

Supporting Transgender, Non-Binary and Intersex Patients P14 "Where a transgender woman is admitted and has a history of sex offending, decisions regarding risk should include consideration of whether they are being prescribed anti-libidinal medication that would be expected to reduce sexual risk."

This is my NHS trust, I will be writing to my Liberal MP again but he's made it abundantly clear that Women's Rights to privacy dignity and safety is less important to him than pandering to trans identifying men!
What also annoys me is the NHS diverting their staff from medical duties to read 15 pages of detailed gobbledegook and then adding to their stressful jobs by having to tread on eggshells.

Do they believe that medication will also stop him from being a violent misogynist?

Now concerned whether I should wear some kind of bracelet as well as the usual matching underwear to flag up that my hairstyle and lack of make up and heels in no way indicates I wish to be placed on a men's ward when hit by the hypothetical bus.

Why did MN remove the laugh emoji! Sorely needed

A Paddington Bear label “please treat me in the women’s ward” could also work?

Nothungrycat · 16/04/2026 12:16

To be fair to my healthcare trust, it does say in the "Hospital Wards" section of the Supporting Trans People Policy that "it is also necessary to consider the legal rights of other patients as they may have legitimate concerns, for instance about being in a bay with a trans patient, if they become aware of the situation. Their views and beliefs are also protected under law as long as they are not being openly discriminatory." However, it then suggests that a solution might be moving the person who has the concern to a single cubicle - not the trans person! I'll be drafting an email to them later, although I'm not sure if there's any point copying it to my MP as she's a LibDem whose response to all my emails in this subject is that this is a toxic debate on both sides and she, of course, has the obligatory trans family member...

I just met her and got to shake her hand!

I told her about how the policy map happened and how I had no idea - she said neither did she! Meaning that without a published policy it had come completely out of the blue for her too! What a wonderful woman!

Ah, but @Cantunseeit crunched all the numbers for us!

It was a true team effort. I’ve said it before, but it was like working on the polar opposite of every horrible group project you ever had to do at school. The horribleness of what we kept having to read was made bearable by the amazing people we were doing it with.

Erebor · 16/04/2026 12:41

I just looked and the map was made with just over 100 lines of code.

The real star of the show is the spreadsheet with all the data in which everyone contributed to and then @TwoLoonsAndASprout (I hope that's correct - we were talking off MN using different names) did a lot of checking all the links were correct and formatting things to make my life easier.

It was me! I got to be very geeky and nitpicky and triple check everything - my weird happy place 😆

Quite. They know where the danger and risk come from, they even put in in writing! But, when WE say it, it's bigotry.

'if a sex offender says he wants to be put on the women's ward, check if his meds will hamper his chances of getting a boner' is not the wholesome BeKind take the public expect.

What an outstanding piece of work @KnottyAuty et al.

Mine is very depressing.

Delivering Same Sex Accommodation Policy P8 "Where practical transgender patients should be asked what their preferences for accommodation are. Some may wish to be accommodated in a single room, if one is available and some may wish to be in a ward where there are patients of the gender they currently identify with."

So they'll ask the trans patient, and not anyone in the ward who has to put up with it.

Do they get moved if they change their mind on Tuesday afternoon?

"some may wish to be in a ward where there are patients of the gender they currently identify with."

Do they get moved if they change their mind on Tuesday afternoon?

Probably.

And I think they mean most, or nearly all, not some...

I'm faintly surprised given the make up of our somewhat rough (allegedly) but definitely very ethnically diverse London Borough, that they've gone for this approach. I wasn't expecting it to be THAT bad. Quite bad as per general NHS opinions, but not that bad.

Great work!

I've just had a look at my employer's policy and searched for that policy on our intranet and public website - but there's no policy with that title. I would like to follow this up to find out where the information came from - who should I contact @KnottyAuty ?
