Very proud to announce that SEENinHealth has published an interactive policy map on their website here:

https://seeninhealth.org/nhs-foi-map/

This is a huge milestone for the fabulous 40 or so mumsnetters who worked together to audit these NHS policies last year and "keep the receipts" which form the basis for this map. SEENinHealth have passed on their thanks to you all!

It is thought that there have been no single sex spaces in the NHS since 2009 despite public declarations to the contrary. The gender self ID policies on this map were in force in 2024-2025 and we found no evidence of any protected single sex spaces for staff or patients across the UK - over 300 Trusts!

We have been doing a follow up sample of FOI searches this month. The results are coming in but so far no Trusts have updated to lawful single sex spaces yet - all are waiting for EHRC guidance... the map will be updated in due course.

Please do use this data to help hold your elected representatives and NHS Trusts to account. And share with others. Sample letters and contact details are linked from the map page to make it easy to request that your Trust complies with the law.

SEENinHealth will be launching the map officially tomorrow so any help boosting their social media posts would be great thank you.

North East London NHS Foundation Trust

Supporting service users who identify as Transgender, non binary and other gender identities Policy P7 “Trans women and risk: Trans women face significantly more abuse than trans men as they are unfairly judged as deceptive, inauthentic and a threat to non-trans women. Data suggests that trans women are far more likely to be the victims of violent crime and assault than to be perpetrator of these crimes. Statistically, non- trans women are far more likely to be harmed by non-trans (cisgender) men in any spaces, compared to being harmed by a trans person. Therefore, it is clear that the safety of the trans woman patient must be carefully considered when supporting them in gendered wards and spaces within NELFT services.

This is just crazy 🤯

Tell that to the woman who was raped on a female ward and then gaslit by hospital staff that she couldn’t possibly have been raped as there were no men on the ward. These trusts need to be held accountable for the bollocks they publish At the very least provide the evidence of these bold statements about TiMs being at greater risk of harm.

I guess you could pick any trust, and it'll be awful. I had a quick look at mine and my DS's. Mine was particularly awful:

SOP: Supporting Transgender Staff P4 IN MANAGER'S CHECKLIST "8.3.7
Agreeing the point at which the individual will commence using single sex facilities in their new gender (such as toilets." p6 "Where locker or shower facilities are open plan then it is good practice to review this, and, at the least, provide some provision (e.g. curtained spaces) where staff need not be in a state of undress in the presence of others. If it is genuinely impossible to to adapt locker or shower facilities in order to accommodate a pre-operative member of staff in a state of undress then this is one very limited example of an instance where the law permits the employer to make separate arrangements. It is highly unlikely that the employee concerned would object to this pre-operatively." p6 "It is also important to appreciate that if anyone is likely to feel vulnerable in the toilet then it will most likely be the trans person - being acutely aware of the incongruity of their anatomy and certainly not wishing to draw any attention to this."

No information about single-sex spaces on trust website

then this is one very limited example of an instance where the law permits the employer to make separate arrangements.

IANAL but I don’t think this was ever ‘law’ other than perhaps Stonewall law.

And of course they have to dismiss the feelings of women feeling vulnerable as being less important than a man’s feelings.

They really have no idea...

They really, really don't! "Most vulnerable " indeed...

OldCrone · 16/04/2026 09:56

I agree with the other posters who have already commented that this shows they are very much on board with the trans agenda, but this bit:

Clinical responses should be patient centred, respectful and flexible towards all Trans people regardless of whether they live continuously or temporarily in the gender role that is opposite to their natal sex.

They seem to be saying that this includes part time crossdressers.

Yes, lots do. The instructions in the transgender patient sections for accommodating patients is to base the decision on what they are wearing. Logically this means a short haired, trouser wearing, makeup free unconscious woman should be put on the men’s ward. Obviously this wouldn’t actually happen as they can tell the difference between men and women. It’s telling though that women are given no consideration and therefore this logical end point has never been noticed

moto748e · 16/04/2026 10:18

No fair-minded person could read even just the brief examples posted in this thread, and deny that the term "sacred caste" is appropriate, and certainly not an exaggeration.

@KnottyAutyThank you for starting this all off and co-ordinating everything - I know lots of mumsnetters helped but it would never have happened without you

I'm really encouraged by all the media coverage on this, but am very much hoping that it doesn't just become yesterday's news by the end of the week, and then buried by all the election coverage in May.

If things haven't changed in the NHS by the end of 2026, after having had the guidance laid before Parliament (we hope), and having given Trusts a few months to "consult " on changes to their policies, I think we will need to push for a top-down governmental review of NHS policy on single-sex provision.

Of course, if Labour win the next general election with a big enough majority, they'll just kick that can down the road again.

We will probably have to get through a few more court cases before things start to really change. I hope women will be able to avail themselves of JKR's fund in order to force through these changes.

Wes Streeting, ARE YOU LISTENING?

youandyourelk · 16/04/2026 10:25

Blimey Devon Partnership NHS Trust is wild!

Supporting Transgender, Non-Binary and Intersex Patients P14 "Where a transgender woman is admitted and has a history of sex offending, decisions regarding risk should include consideration of whether they are being prescribed anti-libidinal medication that would be expected to reduce sexual risk."

Whineandcheese · 16/04/2026 10:26

This is a great resource - thanks to everyone involved! I’ve sent my email - it’s so quick and easy to do!

FarriersGirl · 16/04/2026 10:28

I do hope that Wes Streeting sees the map. He made a big deal yesterday about tackling misogyny in the NHS services. Nothing will improve unless gender ideology is dragged out from the roots of the organisation.

Quite. They know where the danger and risk come from, they even put in in writing! But, when WE say it, it's bigotry.

Yes, agree! He will be aware of it, unless his underlings have conspired to keep it from him. It is likely that he will be asked about it in the near future, as long as women keep the pressure on and the word out there. Labour is all about a lot of talk and no action, however.

Now concerned whether I should wear some kind of bracelet as well as the usual matching underwear to flag up that my hairstyle and lack of make up and heels in no way indicates I wish to be placed on a men's ward when hit by the hypothetical bus.

A massive thank you to KnottyAuty and all the auditors. Sunlight everywhere! X

BigBlueSocks · 16/04/2026 11:03

A big big thank you to all- mnetters who set this going, SEEN in health, everyone who was involved in that lovely (!) map. What amazing work!
I had a little bet with myself that my trust would be one of those non-compliant and I was right.
I'd dearly love to know where they get their stats from, what they've been reading and who wrote these "policies" ?
Don't they read the news??

I have written to my MP for what use that will be as she is fully TWAW and TMAM and has ignored me before. If she responds, I can bet there'll be " vulnerable" "marginalised" " complex" " nuanced" used in any reply.
But I feel better for doing it.

OdeToTheNorthWestWind · 16/04/2026 11:05

I am totally in awe of the clear and comprehensive information presented in this map. There are no hiding places for either the NHS trusts involved, or for the government to try to minimise the impact.

Thank you to all the wonderful members of Mumsnet who gave up their own time to bring this issue to the public consciousness.
