All females welcome for intelligent discourse and non-harmful comestibles.

'Angle of repose' from engineering reminds me of the urban planning term for unofficial paths that people make, e.g. a short cut across a green to a bus stop - 'paths of desire'Smile

Are you sure those aren’t unofficial paths leading off into the bushes?Grin

I can’t do cryptic crosswords at all, @EdithStourton. My mum and sister love (well, mum loved) the Guardian crossword, and I got the feeling from them that I was just a bit inferior because I couldn’t do it. They did have a bit of a habit of brandishing their cleverness at me - which made it such fun when the three of us spent a week together on Orkney, years ago. I got so enraged with my sister’s faux humility that I was ready to twat her to death with a spade - even if that had meant having to go and buy a spade first. I ranted to Nick via email, and by the end of day 2 he had a way to get me off Orkney every day - not a direct flight back to Glasgow, but flight to Aberdeen and then a train.

I did stick it out for the week, but vowed never again.

That was just mean of them, Woley.

I'm sure that there are lots of things that you're brilliant at that they're crap at!

Urgent consolation drink, please gerbils. My brother rang to say our Dad is in A&E then his phone battery linked out and I had a stressful 50 minutes trying to find out where and why.
It's an infection, he's on the resus ward with IV antibiotics because they're concerned about his low blood pressure. He's on IV fluids as well and they are concerned about possible sepsis. He has ulcers on his legs that just won't heal (,6
6 years now) and they've gone very nasty because he was feeling too ill to change the dressings.

Argh.

MarieDeGournay · 14/04/2026 18:03

Very sorry to hear that, Pasta, so very worrying - at least your dad is in the care of professionals now, they will take care of his ulcers properly and hopefully stabilise him overall and make him feel cared for and comfortable.Flowers

EmpressaurusKitty · 14/04/2026 18:20

I’m so sorry, @PastaAllaNorma.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 14/04/2026 18:36

Oh yikes, Pasta! Hope he'll be OK.

Chickadeeinme · 14/04/2026 18:39

I've been AWOL from the Bluestocking for an age - busy with poetry business (it's National Poetry Month and it's not leaving me a lot of time and I'm trying to write a poem a day) so I thought I'd have a change of username just for the hell of it. Posting a picture of me in my new incarnation.

I'll get the gerbils to bring the drinks trolley and the hot chocolate bowser over.

It'll be fine. Rain at yours at 4.22pm.

Not bad Fuzzy!

It was actually 4.02 pm. But close enough!

AngleofRepose · 14/04/2026 15:54

Oh, I'd be interested to hear which iron you settle for. I have a very very very old iron which will die someday soon, with my luck. Most of what I've read online complains about very short power cords which can make ironing difficult.

Philips Azure irons for me (not that I personally use it these days. Why iron when I can pay someone else to iron?) Whichever one is on the best offer when the current one dies. Although the current one has been going for about eight years now.

Well that's because I don't actually know where you are. With more geographical details, PuffinWeather would be spot on. 👌

I hope things improve soon

Oh god! Whilst MNHQ have now changed the spelling error in the title it's worth clicking for the comments! I notice the link still has wanker!!

Oh that could have ended up in Classics! Should have kept the original title

Oh, that does sound worrying, Pasta. Leg ulcers can be a real problem the older we get, as my sister found out. I do hope the IV antibiotics do their stuff and your father starts to improve.

Oh sorry @PastaAllaNorma its hard when our elders have complex health problems.

hello @Chickadeeinme not sure who your previous incarnation was but glad of your return

@Boiledbeetle i commented on that thread pissed me right off. People post utter shit sometimes, well quite often if one goes driving around, if life becomes too sedate

I do hope your dad pulls through, @PastaAllaNorma 💐

My friend's tutorial yesterday was invaluable. Here is my first completed Little Hug. Two more to join together, and a third that needed a border.

I realised that I did the border for the complete Little Hug and another that needs blocking, on the wrong side. I'm now doing the border for the one that needed a border on the right side and it's much better.

We also laid out a pattern for an 80 square Little Hug to go to a teenager with cancer. It will be the size of a single bed.

I'll show the completed ones as they are finished.
