In another "it never happens" but it actually does happen and rather reguarly, Reduxx is reporting:

"A top transgender Reddit moderator has deleted his account after being exposed as a convicted child sex offender. Branden "Brynn" Dunleavy was a moderator at r/MTF, and was reportedly protected by the head of the moderation team."

The subreddit in question (r/MTF) seems a lovely place. It's always a good sign in a community when one of the pinned posts warns users about the importance of keeping their main account and porn account separate to keep "chasers and creeps out of our spaces". 🙄

Let’s not forget that a lot of the data that ChatGPT was initially trained on came from Reddit.

That is bad. I tend to use Grok, hopefully that is better but it often throws up Reddit threads.

I was just pondering, firstly whether any investigative journalists are researching what goes on on Reddit, because it would be rich ground.

The other thing is that Reddit is very obscure to the average person and very anonymous and opaque in its moderation etc.

If it were instead a separate identifiable site something like this would receive far more attention - given the numbers of users and visitors and their ages, and that it's supposedly a support forum.

The other thing about Reddit is that it had considerably more immunity in the past because it was a privately owned company but it floated on the NYSE a couple of years ago (in fact the 2 year anniversary is tomorrow) and is more at risk these days from scandals. Scandals (usually) drive down share prices, this pisses off investors, and investors apply pressure on management to sort things out.

Do we actually have investigative journalists anymore?

The last I saw, the BBC had an in depth 'investigation' into whether a writer had previously self-publshed or had sort of maybe lied about being a first time author.

I think most investigative journos are 1 too expensive and 2 have been gotten rid of for questioning the Right Side of History. Sensible people just write opinion pieces, they dont ask questions.

You are right, especially no UK journo would get far with Reddit being a US site.

I suppose the nearest thing to exposing these online spaces is when detransitioners speak out about what they have experienced in those spaces. They are such important voices and hopefully this will become more common.

It would also be dead easy to infiltrate and pose as an underage person, I suppose.
