The Bluestocking Boxing Day sale: 1 gerbil for the price of 2

Previous thread:

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5457910-the-bluestocking-next-stop-christmas

As the patrons, and gerbils, of The Bluestocking Pub sleep off their Christmas Day food and alcohol intake the capybaras will be getting paid double time to move the pub and contents to the new thread overnight.

All welcome, as long as you are a woman. The men have their own pub The Staunch Ally. It's just down the road, then turn left at the bridge.

You don't have to be mad to drink here but it most definitely helps.

Leave the real world behind and join us in the mayhem and surreal life of a pub staffed by gerbils. Where the food is always exactly what you ordered and the drinks don't give you a hangover the next day!

Hi all just got back from daughter hoglettes house where all three grand hoglettes were. Daughter put a grand feast on and we had great time on minimal sleep.

Fire on, telly on, silence oooooohhhhhh the silence.

DH has adopted the Sensible Man approach and buys about a months worth of identical plain socks at a time. They gradually get thrown away one at a time as holes develop until he has insufficient for a fortnights holiday and then replaces the whole lot.
It also means they can all be washed, dried and stuffed in the drawer with no pairing.

Fella bought half a dozen pairs of identical socks. Each pair developed their own distinct 'personality', they stretched, shrank, etc. So I still had to seek out the one that matched. It was worse than trying to pair up socks with different designs.

I binned 'em.

how annoying…DHs do always get washed and dried the same way, wool program even though they’re cotton. If they do ever start to display individuality it’ll definitely be up to him to sort them out (or more likely bin the miscreants).

Hello and Welcome @pawsedforthought and @InSlovakiaTheCapitalOfCourseIsBratislava. I hope you both enjoy the quiet and cosy ambience of the Bluestocking; the erudite discourse and the occasional onset of hilarity and mayhem.

I have been pondering Cake's crocheted elephant and wondering how big it will end up being. Looking around my own sitting room, I am not sure it would accommodate an elephant, even a crocheted one. I suppose it would depend on whether it was an African or Asian elephant, due to their relative sizes - especially of the ears. Also, how would it get in and out of the house? It would need patio doors at the very least, possibly those bi-fold thingies that bring the garden (and the draughts and every flying insect and next-door's cat) into the house. I think it is very brave of Cake to attempt to crochet an elephant, but I think I'll stick with my knitting.

FYI for newcomers - I don't know how others use the reaction emojis, but I find myself clicking on the 'agree' one a lot, as a way of saying 'hmm hmm, yes' like you would in a conversation, so you know I'm listeningSmile

The laughter emoji is sorely missed here in the BlueyAngry

FuzzyPuffling · 26/12/2025 21:24

I've agreed with that one from Marie.

Socks...DH pairs his own. I will chuck out a holey one if I see it. Otherwise it's his circus, his monkeys.

lcakethereforeIam · 26/12/2025 21:30

Day of the week socks would probably drive me insane.

I've now learned how to spell 'crochet' 🙃

AsWithGladys · 26/12/2025 21:40

Hello to all in our latest location, thanks to @Boiledbeetle for sorting it, and welcome to @InSlovakiaTheCapitalOfCourseIsBratislava .

I am pretty good at knitting, but rubbish at crocheting anything other than granny squares. I see that crocheting is excellent for small toys (amigurumi) so once you’ve made that lovely robin @MyrtleLion you’ll be well set - if you are moved to make more.

When DS lived at home I batch bought him sets of identical black socks. If some faded more than others I paid no attention. What I’d have done if I’d had more than one son, especially ones with feet of different sizes, I don’t know.

Hello dear Hedgie ... you seem to have changed your name slightly. What is it short for? Is it "Hedgehogrightsarehumanrightswhenallssaidanddonebutahedgehogisahedgehogwhateverrr"

It's still fairly Christmassy around here in Sloth Place, also at the New Bluestocking, but the AI has completely forgotten the sherry, as well as the Tunnock's tea cakes!

Magpiecomplex · 26/12/2025 21:58

@AsWithGladys I solved the multiple sons problem by buying one of them black socks and the other grey socks. The black ones usually wore out before they faded enough to match the grey ones.

AsWithGladys · 26/12/2025 22:01

That’s a beautiful photo of Sloth Place, @knittedChristmassysloth . You’re looking well in it.

AsWithGladys · 26/12/2025 22:03

Socks wearing out before they can be handed down solves another problem too, @Magpiecomplex. No need for second son to change sock colour. May I congratulate you on your planning?

After a few increasingly less patient attempts on my part we have this picture .... I feel I have to give up now before it says it can't do any more images which it always says when it gets bored

(oh sorry about the extra Beetle ... it just arrived and wouldn't go)

It looks so cosy Chez SlothSmile
And lovely to see Swash's galleon in the background - thinking of you, dear Swash and Dr Swash💙

Am liking Boilies slippers I was dissapointing not to get some new ones for Xmas

StarryCat · 26/12/2025 22:16

Oh I need the solace of the Blue Stocking tonight. Christmas has been great but pretty full on and I am glad to be able to soak up the warmth of the Blue Stocking. I'm a bit full of food and wine so perhaps just a soothing cup of camomile for me, if the gerbils are around.

Oh and I can't remember who mentioned it upthread but the People's Friend is very much still around. I buy a copy once or twice a year in memory of my Gran. They don't give away free transparent fold away rain hats with them any more though, sadly.

I can't believe how happy it's made me to know that the People's Friend is still a thing. Despite only ever encountering it in the waiting rooms of the Doctor and the Dentist or in the caravan we used to rent when I was a child. I never read it, no cartoons, but I remember the lovely landscapes that were reproduced on the front page.

I've just realised it's been ages since I've seen a waiting room with any magazines. Have they been scrapped? Some sort of infection reduction measure? A, very minor, casualty of covid?

I'm tempted to make a joke about my sister, but she might be reading so I won't

Don't I look cute!

That's what the staff at our medical and dental surgeries told me, Cake. I'm guessing that once they'd cleared them away they realised how much tidier the waiting-room looked and kept it that way permanently. Thank goodness for my Kindle.
