The Bluestocking: it's the season of mulled wine, conversations about pineapple and, of course, gerbils. Confused? You will be...

Welcome to the anarchic and marvellous women-only on-line pub, the Bluestocking. The booze won't give you a hangover, the cakes won't make you fat, and the conversations are fascinating, covering knitting, health and safety, the Muppets and anything else that comes to mind.

Climb Peak Woo, have a cuddle with Rosie the Red Panda, and watch out for capybaras busy with any necessary building works.

Welcome in (and name change at the door if you need too).

First in! Thanks Edith!

Second….

Anactor · 29/11/2025 16:05

In. Would like to know what a giant beetle was doing in my dreams last night.

I did not, under any circumstances, do a dream removal of Boily’s Tunnocks stash. I have no idea why she’d be searching through my spaghetti. Or trying to get back in through the kitchen window once I’d eased her out of the flat.

(Any Tunnocks that may or may not be present are just resting in my flat before moving on to the new thread).

Magpiecomplex · 29/11/2025 16:14

Very public spirited of you, @Anactor, looking after the Tunnocks for Boily.

FuzzyPuffling · 29/11/2025 16:22

Wombat, Cake and I will be here in a minute. We're just doing an extra circuit of the groooooouuuuuuuundssss.......

Chersfrozenface · 29/11/2025 16:34

Haven't popped in for a while. I've been on some other freds including the Christmas craft tat one which is a delight, though one poster is being a bit po-faced.

Have we started on the mince pies and mulled wine yet?

Edited to vary vocab.

AsWithGlad · 29/11/2025 16:41

I'm just settling in. Thank you, @EdithStourton, for the new thread and the reminder to NC. I had wondered whether to change to an even more seasonal one, but it's not Advent (first Sunday in ...) until tomorrow.

(Someone in my online knitting group just mentioned this, in a helpful way as one of us wanted to start her advent calendar knitting before Monday.)

Will there be Advent specials available in the bar?

Magpiecomplex · 29/11/2025 16:43

The bar will be running a month long special on pizza, in honour of the season. Deep-pan only, but all crisp and even...

lcakethereforeIam · 29/11/2025 16:47

My icing is all wind scrubbed!

If it had been earlier in the week you’d have had literal frosting.

Which button do I use in The Bluestocking to indicate laughter?

I don't think it really matters, Glad! 😂

OK. I'm your 'agree', then, although I was tempted by the 'support' one.

Could you very kindly click on that 'agree' and tell me if it says AsWithGlad or not? I have lots of different names for different threads, and I've sometimes wondered if it reports the name I've already used on the thread or my current default one. I imagine if I hadn't already posted here it would have used my default one.

You're showing as AsWithGlad. Interesting question about what name it shows if you haven't posted on the thread. I further wonder if it would change once you have posted 🤔

AsWithGlad · 29/11/2025 17:21

Thank you. I hadn't thought about it possibly changing later.

We could try an experiment. For Science.

Magpiecomplex · 29/11/2025 17:22

I think we should! Any of the regulars who haven't posted yet, fancy trying it out?

Magpiecomplex · 29/11/2025 17:24

Actually, I do have a reaction from Myrtle, and she's not posted yet. Don't know if she has any other usernames though.

AsWithGlad · 29/11/2025 17:47

I've seen Myrtle on at least one other thread, but still in the FWR section so that only helps a bit.

MyrtleLion · 29/11/2025 17:55

I have other usernames and once forgot to change my default name so ended up here with a different perssona.

Generally for your first post on any thread you should change either your

  • default name in Settings so you will appear as that - MyrtleLion is my current default
  • or type into the "Your username" box another username that you already have - I nearly typed in ProfessorMyrtleLion as used in Sara Morrison's tribunal threads (one of the panel uses a professor title that she may not be entitled to use)
  • or create a new username in Settings and that becomes your default until you change it.

To change your default name, just type in the name you want to be default in Settings.

If you want to post under a separate name mid-thread, you should create a new MN account and change your name there. Apparently it might be possible to change name mid-thread without changing accounts, but I don't know how to do that.

Sounds like it's showing as your current default in that case. Which answers part of the question!

MyrtleLion · 29/11/2025 17:58

I don't know if reactions show as your default name but then change if you name change. I do wonder if I react as Myrtle but then later post as another name, whether my reactions then retrospectively change to be the name I've used.

I should have name changed and asked.

Unless Glad typed her Glad name into the username before posting.

MyrtleLion · 29/11/2025 18:01

(I was actually second here but didn't post and say it because I wanted to fill up the other thread and I'm not a showoff like Magpie)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/11/2025 18:17

Lovely new thread - thank you, @EdithStourton!

Im looking forward to seeing what the Bluestocking does in the way of Christmas decorations - in due time, of course. I love lots of fairy lights - the warm white ones. My parents thought Christmas lights were a fire hazard - and to be fair, back in the 70s, maybe they were - but now I go a bit wild with fairy lights.

We don’t usually decorate until a few days before Christmas - this year I’m planning to leave it to ds2 and his gf, when they arrive from Australia for Christmas. With FIL’s funeral the week before Christmas, I think things are going to be a bit chaotic, but I’m sure it will all work out.
