Trans athletes should be able to compete in some women’s sports, suggests Nandy

It’s an article in today’s Telegraph.

A slippery slope or just trying to distance herself from decisions made by sporting bodies?

As far as the nitty gritty, I think it should be sporting bodies who decide this, just like it always has been.

Which means most sports are separate, and a very few, like equestrian, are not.

The bodies are the ones in the best position to make such a determination and I would argue that up until 5 minutes ago I had no beef with any of them.

It's been the demand for trans inclusion where the sports are not already mixed sex that is the problem. And that is down to what the government allowed people to think the law says and social pressure.

That is what Nandy does not seem to understand. If it's a sport that can be mixed, it is fine. If it can't, you can't allow some men.

Imagine if she had one the Labour leadership!

Yes, exactly. Sporting bodies decide whether the sport is mixed-sex, or single-sex. There is a small handful of sports where it's perfectly fair that they're mixed sex. Showjumping is the obvious one. You can have mixed doubles in tennis, of course. There are no doubt others, but the vast majority of sports will be segregated by sex, for exactly the same reasons that they're segregated by age.

If a sport is mixed-sex, then it's mixed-sex. If it's single-sex, it's single-sex.

The idea of having sports that are segregated by sex, but also allow certain members of the opposite sex to take part is a) idiotic b) illegal. It's like having under-16 football teams that also allow 25-year olds to take part, as long as they identify as being 15.

The Supreme Court ruling made this perfectly clear. Why Nandy thinks that it's a problem MPs need to solve is beyond me. She could just say "Sporting bodies must follow the law" and that would be the end of it.

There are mixed leagues in some sports. There's usually a minimum number of men and women on each team.

That is true.

However, it's not what Nandy is talking about.

Coatsoff42 · 01/10/2025 11:12

Why aren’t they campaigning for more gender diversity and expression in sports instead of the rigid gender expectations in sport ie football/rugby/beach volleyball

It would be better to campaign for inclusivity within sexed sports.

But it highlights that the claim trans athletes are excluded is false. There are opportunities for everyone

I agree. Trans men (i.e biological women) who are not taking male hormones should be allowed to compete in womens sports.

And trans women i.e biological men should be allowed to compete in mens sports and mens sport should provide a culture that is safe and free of harassment to let them do so.

Why would you agree?

A transwoman who has gone through male puberty has an unfair biological advantage over women.

The reason we have weight classes in boxing is because it would be unfair to put a featherweight up against a heavyweight. Surely you see the similarity.

teawamutu · 01/10/2025 11:53

Nandy is a midwit who's constantly rumoured to be about to be sidelined. No idea why she's still there, but v much hoping she's not going to be much of a policy force.

Those in charge know her feeble bleatings are electoral poison.

timesublimelysilencesthewhys · 01/10/2025 11:55

I think Starmer has so little support with MPs that hes allowing this to resurface to occupy them.

It is unlikely that Nandy went from believing that male rapist should be allowed to be in womens prisons if they say they are women, to fully supporting the SC ruling. There are obviously lots of TRA within labour MPs and i think they are discussing how they respond. And its not going to be just accepting it.

I dont know how many of them realise they need to change the law, yet though.

She’s saying that TIMs should be in men’s sports with the other males, & that TIFs who don’t have advantages from having taken hormones should be in women’s sports with the other females.

But haven't many sports federations and bodies already taken the lead and made it clear that women's sports are for female people?

I'm unsure why she's saying it's not clear cut?

Because she can say “Look at me! Aren’t I the nice one? I can rail against a judgment I know can’t be changed and my position can’t be enacted, but I can keep the approval of the men in a demographic I want without the hassle of it actually happening.”

misscockerspaniel · 01/10/2025 12:12

Labour party conference time, which is why we are hearing from regressive politicians like Nandy and Powell, and of courses twaw Burnham is sniffing around again, for the chance to topple Starmer.

A timely reminder that battles lie ahead and we must not be caught napping.

Ah got it.

GallantKumquat · 01/10/2025 12:33

Asked about trans inclusion at a fringe event on sport at the Labour Party conference, she said: “So we’ve been looking a lot at this... it’s not for Government, obviously, to decide how competitions are run, but there are three things that we’re trying to achieve.

i.e. it’s not for Government to decide, so I can comment without consequences! ☝️

The first is inclusion

What about the men? 🥺🥺

the second is fairness
Did I mention we need to consider the impact on men? 😭😭

and the third is safety
do we absolutely have to exclude men? 😓😓😓

I think we need to make sure that we put as much energy and ambition into competitions that the trans community can participate in fully as we do into all of the others.

(BTW did I mention that it's not government's roll to decide how competitions run. Just to gaslight its constituents.☺️)

AutumnyCrow · 01/10/2025 12:50

It’s also cruel of Nandy and Powell to hold out hope to vulnerable people that Parliament actually gives a flying fuck about them and will (as if) re-legislate the Equality Act 2010, or overrule / disband the EHRC.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/10/2025 12:53

If there are some sports where mixed sex participation may work, the obvious path forward is to retain the female category and open up the men’s to anyone who wants to participate. This is of course the model being adopted by some sports.

YelloDaisy · 01/10/2025 12:54

I wonder what her childhood was like - how can anyone support this nonsense

Take a look at the Labour conference thread folks for the full context of what is going ... you think Nandy is crazy wait to hear what the full on TA MPs are saying, but also the Labour Women's Declaration are doing well too.

HermioneWeasley · 01/10/2025 16:42

Why do so many senior Labour women, hate women so much?

I despise them all. I really do.

Alucard55 · 01/10/2025 19:22

I wonder if she's asked female athletes how they feel about this. It makes me sick to see these women who are supposedly representing us fall over themselves to support predatory men.

I also really wish journalists would stop framing questions about "trans" people. They should be asking idiots like Nandy do they think biological men should have access to spaces and categories designated for biological women.

caringcarer · 01/10/2025 19:58

Madness. Men don't need to take part in Women's Sport. I'm defining men as any person with a Y chromosome.

unsync · 01/10/2025 20:26

There really are some thickos in this Government aren't there? That's two this week so far who lack the intelligence to understand the issue. Surely there must be someone, somewhere in Government with an IQ bigger than their shoe size?

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 01/10/2025 20:28

Oh, give it a rest, Lisa. No sane person agrees with you.

Instructions · 01/10/2025 21:17

They can definitely compete in any sport they like, just in the sex category to which they actually belong, not the one they wish they belonged to.

She is indeed. She's my MP, for my sins, and she is awful. But she hasn't been side-lined, where Starmer hasn't hesitated to wield the axe at less deserving cases. It suggests to me that he's still scared of appearing too overtly terfy, and hence leaves voices like Nandy in the government to placate the party. But maybe I'm just paranoid! 😀
