Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Hundreds of firms warn new guidance on single sex spaces is ‘unworkable’ and would cause ‘significant economic harm’

More than 650 organisations have urged Bridget Phillipson to ‘take immediate action to prevent these proposals from moving forward’

“We, the undersigned businesses and organisations, are writing to express our deep concern at proposals seeking to enforce blanket, mandatory exclusion of trans people from gendered spaces and services.

“The proposals made in the EHRC’s draft Code of Practice under the Equality Act would have serious and far-reaching consequences for UK businesses, our employees, and our customers.

“Many of us have spent years building inclusive environments where all customers and staff feel safe and welcome. These proposals would tell us to act in ways that directly contradict those commitments; undermining trust, damaging reputations, and risking the loss of valued staff and customers.”

They also express concern that the proposals would put them at “constant risk of complaints and litigation from multiple directions”, as well as forcing “business staff into the unacceptable role of ‘gender police’”.

“Such practices are not only deeply invasive, but likely impossible to implement without breaching Article 8 of The Human Rights Act, which protects rights to privacy, and risking discriminating against valued trans customers and colleagues”

So women's rights are less important than commercial compliance.

It's the law in your country, but not in mine. I haven't heard any spanish women complaining, I think we just don't care. There was no referendum for this (lol), things started to get a bit conplicated with all this creating another bathroom for trans ans whatnot so the goverment got fed up and created a one bathroom for everyone: men, women, trans etc...

So far no complaints from the public.

You haven't heard because you haven't listened. Lots of Spanish women complain online

As everyone keeps asking who the firms are, you could just use a search engine. Confused

But in this instance, I have done it on your behalf!

See https://www.transsolidarityalliance.com/businesses-open-letter

Had to laugh as I was scrolling through and noticed one business that signed was named "I am female"
I mean, how do they know? 😂

GarlicPint · 17/09/2025 05:09

Women will have to put these complainants at “constant risk of complaints and litigation from multiple directions”, then. See how they like them apples.

We knew this was coming.

Hi, Spaniard here (living in the UK) for a while. Our laws regarding bathrooms in public spaces changed. couple of years ago. Nowadays it's all ONE big bathroom with lots of closed toilets, the old fashioned model of two bathrooms (one for men and another for women) is gone fir good. Mens urinals are gone too (now they need to pee in a toilet). Obviously not all businesses/bars in spain have changed their bathrooms into one, many of them still keep the old two bathroom model.

Did the earth shake? No.Are we outraged at this? Not the slightest, we have more important things to worry.

signed: a spaniard totally fine with sharing a bathroom with guys.

Is that the same Spain that has just brought in self ID and then acted all shocked pikachu face when men took advantage of it?

Dozens of male Spanish soldiers have legally changed their gender, allegedly to claim benefits intended for women

Last year, I came face to face with a man coming out of the women's facilities in my local Sainsbury's, and he actually crossed himself when I pointed to the sign!

Thought he was going straight to hell 😀

Tbf that name does have an asterisk after it - I've not found a footnote yet but I'm guessing it says "*Tuesday to Thursday" - or maybe
"*Subject to terms and conditions" - or perhaps simply
"*Whatever that means"

pontefractals · 17/09/2025 07:47

Hm, "The Emperor's Old Clothes" is on their twice, once listed as a trading name (it stood out because we all know it's his NEW clothes that are the issue). If i get really bored I might download the list and see how many are linked/duplicated, and maybe how many are actual companies likely to HAVE toilets etc (a lot of them look to me like one-man-band types, or online only). Just for curiosity's sake.

Spanish men using self-ID gender law to access female care servicesMales with a history of abuse are reportedly switching gender to access centres reserved for women victims of violence

there are loads of issues in Spain with self id. Just because some choose not to see it does not mean the issues don’t exist.

I have a house in Spain and spend a lot of the year there. I’ve never seen these unisex bathrooms you claim exist. They’re all still split male and female as far as I can see.

Swamphag · 17/09/2025 08:02

I know we should be ignoring what the rest of Europe is doing toiletwise but...
During the summer I was in a museum in Germany which had only gender neutral toilets. This was room with two cubicles, two urinals and a single basin.
I've never felt so uncomfortable using a public toilet in my life. When I was in the cubicle someone came in and was using the urinal, I had to walk past him to leave. And the place fucking stank of bloke piss despite actually being clean.
Mr Hag used it later on - he's a big bloke, both height and width - as he was coming out, a young girl of about 10 entered. He said if made him feel really uncomfortable. Why are places putting women and girls in this situation?

On topic - that list is actually hilarious. The biggest and brightest of UK enterprise. Ms Philipson will crumble when that hits her doormat.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 17/09/2025 08:03

How unsurprising that many of those “businesses” have the words rainbow, queer, pride, trans, student in their titles. 🙄

mandatory exclusion of trans people from gendered spaces and services.

It's mandatory exclusion of people of the opposite sex from sexed spaces and services.

Many of us have spent years building inclusive environments where all customers and staff feel safe and welcome.

Why are you providing 'gendered' services if you think the concept is exclusionary and unsafe?

They also express concern that the proposals would put them at “constant risk of complaints and litigation from multiple directions”, as well as forcing “business staff into the unacceptable role of ‘gender police’”.

You might find it helpful to consult a lawyer to find out the difference between guidance and the law.

“Such practices are not only deeply invasive, but likely impossible to implement without breaching Article 8 of The Human Rights Act, which protects rights to privacy, and risking discriminating against valued trans customers and colleagues”

Again what have you been doing so far?

Do they think they have to provide toilet facilities in the back of their cars?

EyesOpening · 17/09/2025 08:34

There are some on there where the names seem a bit vague as to who they actually are so I decided to search for a few.
This one https://www.watershed.co.uk/visit says
"Our toilets in the top foyer are for everyone - some of the fully enclosed cubicles have a sink and mirror in them, some are ambulant (a bit more spacious with supports such as grab rails) and there is also a large family room with plenty of room for a buggy. Just through the Café & Bar we still have separate male and female toilets." so seems ok anyway, although I don't know how big the place is, or how many M & F toilets there are, to know if they're adequate.

Thanks for the link, you have ask 'so why are they on the list?', it doesn't look like they have to change anything. 🤔

It makes you wonder if they even know they're on the list, or what the list was for.

sashh · 17/09/2025 08:42

Well they don't understand what they are talking about, no one has banned trans people.
