Took it out of their centenary exhibition because the staff LGBT+ network kicked up a fuss. Craven. This really needs massive public challenge and push back - if the National Library isn't able to fend off the censors we are utterly lost. https://x.com/EthelWrites/status/1955390550494023958

Never apologise for buying a book! Maybe give us a precis, if you can be arsed.

The best thing I ever read on Butler (I've not read Butler) was Nussbaum's 'professor of parody' essay.

I'd prefer it if any proceeds were going to charity/women's causes like 'Woman who wouldn't wheesht". I don't want it going to suppress women's sex based rights.

I might start a thread once I've got to the end read as much as I could if Butler's.

I confess I've skipped several chapters to one on the UK "TERFs and the British Matters of Sex". She does at least admit strong difference with international movements aka Trump.

But so far then goes on to build another strawmen before burning it down yawn. And I'm far from an expert on these matters like many on here...

I agree. It's utterly superb.

Is Harry Potter on display?

Yes it is. It was on the shelf below where I took this picture:

The cards supporting TWWWW have been removed, presumably for the safety of staff who might evaporate if they come across them unawares.

It seems the trans love heart one has also been removed. God, why can't they just see how pig headed they are being about this??? Just bloody let different views and different books be displayed!

Exactly, it's so flippin' childish and precious.

Well, in case there wasn't already enough clear evidence of the NLS' discrimination, they are helpfully providing repeated illustrations.

For anyone who is visiting, please do document and timestamp all this. And thanks!

AsTreesWalking · 24/08/2025 07:31

"More to the point, why are people who are so into libraries incapable of actually reading?"
The says it all, really. It's all reaction, no reflection.

There isn't space to keep many cards up, and the ones they leave over time are kids' ones and ones that say good things about books / libraries / the library which is the main purpose of the two displays. They remove all the TWWWW cards and most of the pink'n'blue ideology ones as well as many others leaving plenty of space for new ones. Either they bin them or they must have an impressive collection! Anyway if we keep putting up more they'll know this wont go away.

I've been in most days over the last week and put up a card or two each time. I haven't always taken pictures though, I wont be in often in future but will try to remember to photograph when I do.

ArabellaScott · 24/08/2025 08:17

Thanks, Amaryllis! Appreciate your efforts.

DuesToTheDirt · 24/08/2025 10:18

It's great publicity for them though - both for sales, and for raising awareness of the silencing of women. It shows exactly why this book is needed.

I am completely unaware of any of the other books in the exhibition.

My copy just arrived in the post. Yay! Looking forward to reading it. I wonder if the NLS have found a copy yet!

It's a great book and not a hateful word in it.

Enjoy! What the women went through is a hard read in places though.

Popped into the NLS today. Sorry the book still wasn't there but Happy Birthday anyway Susan Dalgety. ❤

A friend and I popped in with our copies today and had them on the table while we were in the cafe. One woman came over to ask where we got them. Another asked what this was all about. In the display area, a man and a woman remarked positively as I put up a card in support of TWWWW. The woman said how much the Sandie Peggie case had raised awareness at her work.

edited for typo

ArabellaScott · 25/08/2025 21:37

I absolutely bloody love that the signs keep reappearing. Thank you to the women for polite persistence and resistance. And thanks Amaryllis and WaterThyme for reports.

Tomorrow I'll escalate my complaint.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 26/08/2025 07:54

And thanks to everyone who's putting in complaints. The library don't have to count the cards but I'm sure they keep track of how many formal complaints they receive. And they've sent the same response to these complaints so it should be easy to count them and count how many have been escalated to stage 2.

user1471471849 · 29/08/2025 13:50

I'm halfway through this fantastic book and I'd urge everyone to buy a copy. The irony of it being cancelled by the NLS!
The women telling the stories were so brave in standing up for themselves and standing up for the truth. It's giving me a bit more confidence and strength to speak out when I need to. I have done in the past, and had some fallout but nothing like the mass abuse these women put up with. I'm hoping as many people as possible will read it.
Has there been any update on the NLS situation?

StanfreyPock · 29/08/2025 14:09

Judging by the mighty silence the NLS is still firmly in its bunker, eyes tight shut and fingers in its ears, wondering if they've all gone away yet. No chance!

Well, I've just put in a complaint about the treatment of the book and authors as I hadn't done so before. I'm interested to see what they will say.
