Doctors’ union votes for ‘identity-based care’ despite warning over lawfulness

The doctors’ union has voted for transgender patients to have “identity-based care” and called for this approach to be embedded into training.

But the British Medical Association (BMA) has been warned the move risks going against the law, after the Supreme Court ruling in April that the terms woman and sex in the 2010 Equality Act “refer to a biological woman and biological sex”.

At the BMA’s annual representative meeting in Liverpool on Wednesday, a majority of members voted in favour of a motion said to centre on “respect, safety and dignity” of LGBTQ+ doctors and patients.

The vote reflected the ‘deep passion within the profession for delivering truly personalised care’, the BMA’s Dr Latifa Patel said.

Oh dear, they'll be sorry. And skint.

PractisingMyTelekenipsis · 26/06/2025 21:04

Identity based care? What, so TW will be called in for smear tests and mammograms? Will TM be offered prostate checks?

IwantToRetire · 26/06/2025 21:06

I thought it was an old story and that this nonsense had been hit on the head.

But then realised it was voted on yesterday.

Confused

When you see a dr you should be able to see their vote on stuff like this 🫣
no grip on biology = no grip on reality

StellaAndCrow · 26/06/2025 21:12

FFS! How is anyone supposed to support the BMA when they do shit like this?

Sure, the NHS has so much money to fund such complete wastes of time and resources

Is this for real? Identity-based care would be exactly what would endanger people’s lives as so much of required care would be relevant to biological sex from symptoms, dosage, treatment… Agree with a PP id be going nowhere near any doctor that believes in this

nocoolnamesleft · 26/06/2025 21:15

Oh for fuck’s sake.

Faffertea · 26/06/2025 21:16

I give up (my membership)

DragonRunor · 26/06/2025 21:20

Agree we should know how particular doctors voted on this. Good quality medical care requires that (among other things)
a) you know the importance of sex in medical care
b) you grasp the concept of evidence based medicine
If my doctor isn’t achieving this bare minimum, I want a different doctor!

cornishatheart · 26/06/2025 21:33

I wonder whether the majority of practising doctors would support this motion. It was a meeting of (presumably?) elected representatives but it would be interesting to know whether they represent the majority view of the BMA's members.

DuchessofReality · 26/06/2025 21:38

I mean, I can understand that some doctors may feel strongly about some patients benefiting from ‘identity based care’. It sort of depends what they mean. I could get behind the NHS recording both sex and gender in two different fields, for example.

But doctors don’t need ‘identity led care’ for themselves as doctors. So what they must be saying is ‘(some) male staff must have the right to change with females’ and ‘(some) male staff reserve the right to give care to women who have specifically requested a female’

And that is a really bad look!

The BMA and the NEU both really annoy me because they trade on the fact that people think that they should be trusted to put patients/children first, but they are both unions who seem to only serve part of their membership in this issue.

This is the newly elected Chair of BMA

What crank site is that?

Doctors decide to do what's best for their patients and colleagues. Next on the news, water is, in fact, wet 🙄

Just because some trans rights have temporarily been taken away doesn't mean that suddenly everyone has turned into an anti-science crank.

Rightsraptor · 26/06/2025 21:52

What happens if you don't have an identity?

No trans rights have been taken away

trans ppl appropriated rights that were never theirs to start with

but you know this already, you’re just here for the Reddit back slaps and screenshots

HiCandles · 26/06/2025 21:56

I have been a member for years despite colleagues all over the place leaving in droves after the junior doctor contract issues, but I will now be cancelling my membership. I cannot support this. I did not vote or remember seeing a vote offered to me, to be honest, though I could easily have missed the email assuming it was advertising.

"You didn't lose any rights" vs "we took away those rights because the transies stole 'em from us"

please make up your mind.

Obviously we lost rights. Case law was decided on those rights you pretend don't exist, those rights existed before the EqA.

I'm not even on Reddit.

murasaki · 26/06/2025 22:12

You never had the right to enter the single sex spaces that were not for your biological sex. You just assumed you did and now have been reminded that you don't.

How about the respect, safety and dignity of women? Hmm?

Theunamedcat · 26/06/2025 22:23

Did you know if your born male and you have blood given to you from a woman who has been pregnant there is a slightly higher chance you will die?

Male heart attack presents different to female

Men get checked for prostate cancer

Women get checked for cervical cancer

If we "believe" everyone's identity over biology people will get sick and die

I'm getting to the point where I don't care if someone wants to claim they are a woman/man skip all their checks and get seriously ill it's self inflicted zero sympathy because there comes a time where you just have to wash your hands of them all

I was going to say pretty much the same regarding grown ups. Children are a different matter, but adults who supposedly were capable to think this through, I'm beyond caring if they die of untreated prostate cancer because their identity was more important to them than reality.
I'm however not sure if doctors should adopt this attitude.

murasaki · 26/06/2025 22:33

Doctors really shouldn't. But I'm getting there too, and if one of them wants to go and check IT'S imaginary cervix, good luck to both of them. It won't be pretty.

Yep. This.

Plus this whole story is an example of what happens when we join unions but don’t take an active interest in voting for stuff (and I count myself guilty of this, not just blaming others, albeit at least my union is not as fundamental as a doctors’ union). Policy gets determined by extremists with no material grip on reality.
