I guess they didn't need to wait for further guidance after all. Let's hope all other toilet and changing facilities (council, nhs etc)follow suit.

Thanks for sharing. See how easy it is? Nobody is left out in the cold - there are single-sex and gender-neutral facilities, everyone is catered for. How simple and straightforward this could have all been from the start.

NC28 · 08/05/2025 16:42

I still think it’s a bit confusing. Yes, they’re single sex. But say if Person A was born biologically male but now identifies as a woman or considers themselves trans, do they still use the female toilet if they want to?

Edit - just read the X link, had only read the Holyrood one prior.

Helleofabore · 08/05/2025 18:43

sounds like they could sort it easily enough. I expect to hear wailing though.

ArabellaScott · 08/05/2025 18:48

Well done, Scotparl.

-Never thought I'd type those words again!

LonginesPrime · 08/05/2025 18:48

Johnstone said: “As Scotland’s legislature, it is vital that the parliament fulfils its legal responsibilities. Our officials therefore took immediate steps following the publication of the judgment to review it in detail and to consider its implications for services and facilities at Holyrood.

More people should be saying this, instead of pretending they can’t read and don’t have legal advisors.

ArabellaScott · 08/05/2025 18:51

I wonder if this means all the cosy quangos and NGOs funded by Scotgov will be sorting their stuff out, too.

Keeptoiletssafe · 08/05/2025 19:43

Hmm

Forget the Royal mile.
It’s now The Holyrood Mile (high club).

Apologies for my lack on enthusiasm. Mixed sex private spaces need to be watched carefully for misuse and to make sure people are ok inside them.

What will happen, is that some women will stop using them as they will be unpleasant to use unless they are cleaned very regularly. A man may faff about putting a little camera in there. People will go in there to have sex. Hopefully with consent. People will take drugs/vapes/smoke. In the end they will end up be used by men for a good sit down. But hopefully they won’t have a medically emergency because it will take a while for them to be found.

Or perhaps, because of all the security, not.

But it’s what goes on in the real world with the mixed sex, soundproof, private toilets labelled gender neutral.

I wish toilet designs for women and those with disabilities were given as much thought and urgency.

Akire · 08/05/2025 19:49

Are there going to be gender neutral third spaces or are disabled toilets and changing rooms expected to just take up the slack? It can be difficult enough already. Groups of younger people want to make a point. They all want the gender free option and there’s you queuing for ages because they refuse use men’s or women’s.

It helps if you read the links provided.

We’re currently living between England and Scotland.

Scotland has always seemed so much more sensible and straightforward to us.

………..apart from Supreme Court cases and NHS Fife

JamMakingWannaBe · 08/05/2025 21:04

Is it just me or is the article unclear on whether SS provision has been retained in the public areas? It states "The toilets in the public area will be gender neutral." It's a while since I've been in the Parliament Building but I can't imagine there are more than 3 toilets in the public area. It's not THAT big and they are definitely rows of stall toilets with a separate sink area rather than one enclosed space with an individual sink.

Scottish government suddenly finding their sanity is a new development so what does it remind you of? Are you a time traveller?

SirChenjins · 08/05/2025 21:53

It seems like a common sense approach - and that’s not a sentence I ever thought I’d type about the Scottish Parliament.

Really?

How straightforward is it when you have a first minister who identifies someone as not really trans well a rapist?

Like the non-genuine walk about with a sticker on their napper!

'Toilet facilities
The Scottish Parliament is an inclusive building, and part of this is to ensure everyone has suitable toilet facilities. It is our policy to ensure there is an appropriate spread of single sex, gender-neutral, and accessible toilets in the public area of the parliamentary estate. Our facilities include:

  • Female-only toilets (communal single sex facilities for those who require them).
  • Male-only toilets (communal single sex facilities for those who require them).
  • Gender-neutral toilets (inclusive communal facilities that can be used by all visitors who require or choose to use them. This includes trans and non-binary people, people who do not want to use female-only or male-only toilets, parents and guardians accompanying children of a different sex or gender, and those who care for people of a different sex or gender).
  • Accessible toilets (facilities that are designed to meet most needs of independent wheelchair users, people with mobility impairments, and people with other physical conditions, as well people with hidden disabilities).
  • Changing Places facility (a specialist space with a hoist and changing bench, and providing room for a companion or caregiver).
All communal facilities include shared waiting areas and washing facilities. There are also baby-changing and feeding facilities.'

Reddit is calling this eminently sensible and fair provision 'fascism'.

Wonderful sunlight. Someone's suggested protest. Fingers crossed!

Aaaaand they're calling for a 'Parliamentary piss in'.

Geezo, chaps. You really do do our work for us. Operation 'let them pee' is launched.

‘parents and guardians accompanying children of a different sex or gender’

This is the safeguarding fail. After researching toilet safety, this phrase really grates.
