I guess they didn't need to wait for further guidance after all. Let's hope all other toilet and changing facilities (council, nhs etc)follow suit.

Aaaaand they're calling for a 'Parliamentary piss in'.

Geezo, chaps. You really do do our work for us. Operation 'let them pee' is launched.

Yeah, try it Mr Molly - see what happens. You’re already erased.

I demand you reverse this fascist decision now! Or forever go down in history as an apartheid enabler.'

Molly's threat.

Well. Let's see how that goes.

The person in Florida who did it as a protest is currently going through court. So, maybe Sparkles is aiming to be the test case for Scotland and will do it to see what happens. And if nothing happens, then these male people will simply ignore the law.

ArabellaScott · 09/05/2025 13:37

It'll only be a useful protest, Sophie, if you are sure to film it and attract as much attention as possible. Let everyone know what you're up to! Livestream it!

Actually, on second thoughts ...

Oh well Mr Molly - when you put it like that. Quick, everyone step aside for the angry man who wants to get his cock out in the ladies loos.

‘parents and guardians accompanying children of a different sex or gender’

This is the safeguarding fail. After researching toilet safety, this phrase really grates.

Is the primary concern that someone other than a parent/guardian might bundle a child in there to assault them, or are there other possibilities as well?

PS re doors - how well would a small, mesh covered gap at the bottom work? Would that allow checking for collapsed toilet users but not sliding phones in?

I think it's good that you keep raising the safety aspect in the old sense of the word. Keep it up.

Genuine Question:

Edit (Sorry, that makes me sound like one of our ingenuous ploppers)

The organisation I currently work for (open to public) appears to have a fairly common sense approach in that they have Male, Female and "Gender-Neutral/Accessible toilets.

The male toilets are immediately on the left but the female and GN/A ones are about 20 yards further on, also on the left.

Quite often clients will ask me where the toilets are and I will direct them to the appropriate one. Today I was dealing with a transwoman, now they thankfully did not ask to use the toilet but if they had, how do I phrase it?

"Over there on the left", with an airy wave of the hand?

Specific "Men's here, GN further on on the left"?

What I don't want to say is "Men's over there, ladies and GN further down on the left" as that implies their choice includes the female ones"

"Men's over there, GN further down the corridor" makes it obvious I don't think they're female and this is a public area and I don't want to be rude or "out" them. I also don't want to lose my job as I'm still on probation.

'All facilities are on the left over there'

But they aren’t female - so it’s absolutely fine to say there’s a male toilet and a gender neutral toilet. If a woman asked you then you’d just say there’s a female toilet and a gender neutral toilet.

'All facilities are on the left over there'

Gosh, nailed it in one, Arabella, thanks, I've been tying myself in knots, totally overthinking it.

@SirChenjins To be honest I probably wouldn't say that to a woman as she'd pass the GN toilet as it's right next to the female toilets.

She might be happy to use either though - but if they’re next to each other then hopefully she’ll see the signs for both.

Maybe, but she'd see the GN one as she was about to enter the ladies and could use it if she wanted.

I disagree as someone often sent to enquire about toilets for the party I am with and annoyingly being only given the directions to the one that suits me. I would recommend, if they are not all in the same direction, mentioning all of them. So no-one gets lost.

And ferries. And deep fried Snickers bars.

Don't forget Pizza crunch, possibly the best delicacy to have been invented.

See, I did not know this was a thing. I ordered a pizza once in a chip shop and watched the horror unfold in front of my eyes.

RedToothBrush · 09/05/2025 15:34

So it's apparently 'just wanting to pee' and being unable to leave the house because there is 'noehere for them to pee'. Then when provided somewhere they can pee without being outted, there's suddenly a cry for 'lets invade the ladies' and 'mark our territory'.

Would their territory be the land or would it be the women on that land?

Yep it's definitely about 'just wanting to pee' which we knew all along, but I'm personally grateful for the real-time demonstrate of power and control games over women's rights and their consent which are playing out in real time.

I was having a long conversation about the fall out from the SC ruling with DH this afternoon. He hasn't clocked a lot of it, but as soon as he went through bits and pieces in his head his response was "they really need to be careful here, because unfortunately I think so of them are stupid enough to keep pushing and all that's going to do is result in greater clarifications and greater scrutiny and stronger protections for women".

I think it's good that you keep raising the safety aspect in the old sense of the word. Keep it up.

Multiple cases have been taken to court, yes. Young girl victims mostly. The problem with a mesh would be hygiene (another reason for the gap because it’s much easier to wash the floor and drain down) but I like your thinking. I wish designers could get together and design with health and safety as a priority.

It’s the attractive privacy in mixed sex toilet design that lead to problems with sex, assaults, drugs and medical emergencies (heart attacks, strokes, seizures).
That’s why I think single sex toilets with door gaps are the best for the protected characteristics of sex, disabilities (epilepsy, diabetes etc) and for effective ventilation, cleanliness and in a fire evacuation.

In a few years time, people will start to realise that designs matters but I want to get the word out now whilst toilets are on people’s mind. We really don’t need lots of private, mixed sex toilets replacing single sex ones.

And why of course, we need single sex toilets.

Would perspex at the bottom of doors work as an option? Enough to prevent cameras but enough to see anyone who has had a medical?

I don’t know - interesting thought. The school designs* only have a 5mm gap now so that’s been a problem too.
I am sure there’s tech/designers out there that could think of some solutions.

edit: DfE standard secondary school design

Chrysanthemum5 · 10/05/2025 13:07

They never have any thought for the women who were excluded from the heart of Scottish democracy because they didn't want men in their toilets.

Plus Vic Valentine is an eejit so I have no care for her views

Helleofabore · 10/05/2025 16:55

i reckon this is an appropriate place to put this. There are some very talented women out there and this is one catchy earworm.
