Transgender women or transwomen?

Am I alone in finding this confusing?
The BBC just used the term interchangeably.
In my mind, transgender women are transgender.

The confusion is deliberate. They've also used trans female to mean man before.

fabricstash · 01/05/2025 17:40

It’s transwomen. They frame it like that as if to say they are a kind of woman 🙄

Hadalifeonce · 01/05/2025 17:43

To avoid confusion when I speak to people and need to refer to a trans person, I just use trans identified man or woman. It saves a lot of explanations.

senua · 01/05/2025 17:45

The Supreme Court used the phrase "transwoman (biological man)". So much clearer.

Ddakji · 01/05/2025 17:46

They mean men so they should just say so.

puffyisgood · 01/05/2025 17:46

'male to female transsexual' is clear and shouldn't be too offensive.

Sorry, it wasn't the SC. It was the EHRC.

DeeplyMovingExperience · 01/05/2025 17:52

I do wish the media would stop with all the obfuscation and call them men, which is what transgender women are. Or men who want to be women. Or males who dress as women.

BBC are particularly bad for this but that's just what we have all come to expect from our stonewalled broadcaster.

This works.

amylou8 · 01/05/2025 17:53

Trans identified man. They aren't women.

Ddakji · 01/05/2025 17:54

I don’t agree with any phrase that attaches female words to men, because it still sows confusion and doubt into what sex that person is (which I’m sure is deliberate).

so male to female doesn’t work for me because they aren’t female.

BundleBoogie · 01/05/2025 17:54

Man who identifies as a woman.

RNApolymerase · 01/05/2025 17:55

I saw the BBC use "transgender women, who are biologically male but identify as women" the other day.
Bit long winded maybe.

Ddakji · 01/05/2025 17:56

amylou8 · 01/05/2025 17:53

Trans identified man. They aren't women.

Men who identify as trans is better, I think - prioritises reality over identity. Truth over lies.

Kucinghitam · 01/05/2025 17:56

Male person of gender.

That’s dreadful!

BobbyBiscuits · 01/05/2025 17:58

To me it's the same? Trans just being the short version of transgender?
I don't know why they would need to make them seem different?

Soontobe60 · 01/05/2025 17:59

‘Men’ will suffice

puffyisgood · 01/05/2025 17:46

'male to female transsexual' is clear and shouldn't be too offensive.

Only problem with that is that it gives credence to the belief that it is possible to change your sex.

'Male to female trans person/transgender person' seems like the clearest, fairest description to me.

I agree, it was deliberate of course, calling themselves women. They should never have been allowed to use the word, it's our name - they're men.

Helleofabore · 01/05/2025 18:04

It is confusing. There are polls showing that high % of population don’t understand.

Hence I always refer to the sex of someone. Eg Male person with transgender identity. I know it annoys people, but it cuts through the constant backwards and forwards about what it all means.

MsFogi · 01/05/2025 18:06

I just stay transperson regardless of how they present/their biological reality. I think saying trans woman or trans man suggests that somehow someone can magically change sex which is clearly not the case.

CarobBean72 · 01/05/2025 18:19

The most bizarre I’ve heard was Jazz Jennings being described as “A woman of transgender experience.”

aka a male whose experience is of stunted development, castration, and numerous savage cosmetic operations.
