PCS - the Public and Commercial Services Union have sent an email to members today stating the decision by the Supreme Court is ‘appalling and devastating’.

Are there any members of FDA or Prospect that has insight to their position and reaction?

Is that all members?

Bearsinmotion · 23/04/2025 12:36

I am in PCS and haven't received that (yet)

EmpressaurusKitty · 23/04/2025 12:39

I’ve been looking out for a response from Prospect but haven’t had / seen one yet.

If I get one I’ll share here.

Ditto

Tallisker · 23/04/2025 12:41

I was a member of PCS and I left because of their stance on women. I knew if I got into bother they wouldn’t support me, so I voted with my feet. Shame, I think every employee should be in a union.

thinkningaboutit · 23/04/2025 14:06

It was a branch email but said they were copying from the Group Executive Committee. I was surprised at the tone, there was no wiggle room, I wonder if this is a departure from the national group.

I am a retired member of Prospect and had heard nothing, so thought, so far so good.
My son, still working, is an ordinary member, and has just informed me that they have had an email offering support to transpeople (transwomen I assume.)

Are there any unions not captured?

As an aside, today I boycotted a bookshop which I would normally support because they had stuck a big trans flag up in their window. Which wasn't there before.

TheOtherRaven · 23/04/2025 18:47

Womens rights in law are 'appalling and devastating' .

Righto.

thinkningaboutit · 23/04/2025 20:07

The branch are pretty unorganised anyway so I’ve been disappointed in other ways but had hoped for existing members they may have at least try to strike a balance.

I'm in Prospect and haven't heard anything.

Peregrina · 23/04/2025 20:22

I don't know whether it was just from the Local Branch of Prospect - it might have been.

Exactly this. These people seem to have no understanding of how offensive their open prioritising of men over women is.

Hermyknee · 23/04/2025 20:25

What do we stop?
Women’s rights
When do we stop them?
Now!

RaininSummer · 23/04/2025 20:29

That's a bugger. It's my union. May need to leave.

IReallyLoveItHere · 23/04/2025 20:31

I'm PCS, have been waiting but nothing yet.

Obviously I am not surprised.

DrEllie · 23/04/2025 21:13

I think I will have to leave UCU given the GS Jo Grady's SM tweets from Saturday's pro-trans demo. I knew they were captured but this doubling down is appalling

Peregrina · 23/04/2025 21:14

I am not surprised though - Labour and the Trades Unions grew up together and they were both male dominated.

And all this guff about standing with Transpeople is all about TransWomen found to be most definitely NOT women.

JumpingPumpkin · 25/04/2025 14:49

I’ve had something from my union reps that the bit of the public sector I am in haven’t changed their policies. Quick check of the policy shows it doesn’t comply with the Supreme Court decision. Time to start encouraging my employer and the union to comply with equality law I think.

I'm in Prospect and haven't heard anything.

I still haven’t heard from them either. I’d like to think that’s a good sign but…

AnneElliott · 26/04/2025 00:08

I’m FDA and haven’t seen anything from them yet.

thinkningaboutit · 26/04/2025 14:05

There was a call the other day. I wasn’t on the call but I saw the teams chat, there did look like there was some discussion, although it looked like it was quickly moved to ‘no debate’. I’ll try find out more but looks like PCS aren’t women friendly.

I spoke to a member of Unison about the judgment the other day. He is also in the SNP.

He said the reason these groups get to take over is because so few people actually get involved and come to meetings so it leaves it wide open to groups with an agenda to get in and take over. He told me the SNP had lost about 10% of its membership, mostly women.

I guess one thing he potentially wouldn’t notice is that, when these aggressive men do invade, they often split whatever members are there. Two opposing groups form and the group that feels cowed simply remove themselves. It’s a pattern familiar to anyone who has been targeted by narcissists/bullies in their lifetime.

Very disappointed about PCS as I hadn’t heard much about them being anti-women before, unlike Unison and various others. If the Darlington Nurses union starts a branch for non-nurses, I would absolutely move to them. I’m also currently PCS and haven’t received anything.

Edited

I've known parish council members who would agree.

They might not be women friendly now, but we can change that.
