Unison Women's Conference motion "trans women are women" as nurses battle NHS for single sex facilities

the Unison motion, put forward by the union’s Camden branch, asserts that “trans women are women and trans men are men”.

It goes on to denounce the idea that allowing trans women to access female spaces will mean women lose rights and claims women have “a vested interest in standing alongside our trans comrades”.

Unison’s national women’s conference, to begin in Edinburgh on Thursday, is expected to pass a call to produce a “myth-busting factsheet” which would “counter the idea” that trans and women’s rights are ever in conflict.

The motion, which insiders said they believed would likely pass, states that “gender-critical groups and individuals often organise around women-only spaces and the idea that trans people having rights means that women will lose rights.”

It adds “women’s rights are not diminished by trans people having more rights” and calls for literature to be created “to counter the idea that an increase in trans rights would mean a decrease in the rights of others”.

Affinity have been involved in at least one case for a GC academic, I think.

Next few years are going to be interesting as these gender redoubts run into conflict with the shifting tide. If that motion is true how can Unison support the Labour party?

Looking at this thread only delegates can vote. Also interesting criteria for transgender members.

Anyone thinking of leaving hold off a moment. We need to organise. Mass action is how unions are formed mass protest is the only way to raise issue and get change.

As the Sexist Steve North says on X "Reading lots of posts tonight saying UNISON is losing members because we’re pro-Trans rights. Well, 2024 was the single biggest year of membership growth in our history and most new members were women. "

They think they are winning. We can't let them. People are joining unions because they want better conditions not because they want women to stop existing.

I see three strategies going forward.

1 Co-ordinated mass resignation. Draw up a statement / declaration so there can be a mass resignation and there can be a press release. Reality focused people have been abandoning unions over this sexist garbage for ages. However it has been happening individually which is not the best because it is ignored.

If lots leave and all say they are going to affinity or somewhere else that might make an impact.

2 Fight back within the union. Stuff like Trade union Seen and other initiatives have sparked hope over the last few years. However nothing substantial has occurred. It maybe this can't work because it is too tough.

3 Legal action. Any legal eagles here? Can someone sue unison for sexism? A bunch of the stuff in the guide for trans members looks clearly illegal to me like on changing rooms it looks to misrepresent the equality act.

They have imbibed the notion that traditional ideas are right wing. So biological sex, which is a 'traditional belief' is right wing and 'spectrum of sex', 'sex is mutable' etc is left wing - so they decide that TWAW because it fits their world view. That it's bollocks doesn't come into it.

This is unbelievable and womens rights are threatened, so to state this is unbelievable.

I'm a retired member of Unison. It's a betrayal of women's rights, simple as that. Where was the opposition too? Why is there so much emphasis on trans rights when women don't have equality. Agree with your comment.
