Queensland Calls a Halt to Puberty Blockers

NotYourCisterinAus · 28/01/2025 11:44

Queensland is the first state in Australia to put a pause on puberty blockers while doing a review into paediatric gender services. The usual suspects are outraged.

(Linking to News Ltd., because I can guess what the Guardian's, the ABC's and SBS's coverage is like.)

Also, the Queensland Government's own statement on their decision:

Excellent news.

teawamutu · 28/01/2025 12:35

How captured is Queensland generally?

Msmoonpie · 28/01/2025 12:38

So many places and countries pausing and doing more research. It’s almost as though it was pushed through under researched and poorly justified…

heathspeedwell · 28/01/2025 12:40

More good news. And of course every single month that goes by when blockers are paused shows that kids don't need them, which totally undermines the claim that this medication is 'life-saving'.

Weesiewoo · 29/01/2025 03:23

Queensland has just had a change of government from Left to right.

NotYourCisterinAus · 29/01/2025 03:35

There was a substantial article on the subject in today's paper edition of the Australian (link to archived version):

And commentary by Bernard Lane:

There's a lengthy analysis here (may have been shared on the other thread, I don't know):

That’s a great article you’ve linked @RoyalCorgi . It’s really thorough and lays things out clearly.

More pressure in Australia:

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 29/01/2025 22:03

Wow that's a big step. Australia has been very very captured for a long time.

The dam is breaking - the Federal government has announced a national enquiry:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01-31/federal-review-treatment-guidelines-trans-gender-diverse-kids/104882406

After Labor and the Greens have blocked any kind of discussion for years. Fingers crossed that it's not a Yes Minister kind of enquiry.

I’m a little bit skeptical of this - the current federal government (Labor) has been very sympathetic of towards the concept of “trans kids” and gender affirming “care”. They have said they want the QLD review that was announced a few days ago to stop, and be replaced by their own.

Helleofabore · 31/01/2025 09:51

I was just coming to post this!!!

I can only hope it is properly run and Ada Cheung or Michele Telfer are not leading it.

I hope they choose one of the clinicians from Westmead children’s clinic who were raising the alarm as being on the team. And certainly allow contributions from them and Jillian Spencer.

Helleofabore · 31/01/2025 10:03

”It is important that this process is driven by evidence and is conducted by our most eminent medical researchers and clinicians, engaging with Australians with lived experience," Mr Butler said.

I have little confidence that this will be a thorough and impartial review. I suspect that AUSPATH position will be stamped all over it.

And noticed that the ABC still refers to women as ‘anti-trans’. Thereby designating the letter with 100 signatories that brought this to a head as ‘anti-trans’.

PokerFriedDips · 31/01/2025 10:09

@NotYourCisterinAus that article is more worrying to me than hopeful. The focus on "people with lived experience" could make the whole exercise nothing but TRA word-salad unless there's a grownup in charge making sure that the lived experience of detransitioners, and those who experienced some kind of gender questioning but due to not being railroaded thankfully managed to navigate their way through puberty without being medicalised and sterilised, get given appropriate weighting.

FeralWoman · 31/01/2025 12:28

I don’t trust that the current federal government will do a true unbiased review. Their view is TWAW so they’ll happily continue to let children be sterilised and have their health permanently fucked up.

I want Labor to stay in power because overall they’re better for the whole country but they’ll do nothing to stop gender ideology.

How long do they expect the review to take if they’re only expecting interim puberty blocker advice mid next year?

I hate that the LNP is in government in Queensland but hopefully their gender clinic review is a true one and has an effect on stopping this crap.

SeethingHarpie · 31/01/2025 15:20

Questions are being asked, finally… in the media, in government, in medical circles.

NotYourCisterinAus · 01/02/2025 06:17

Yes, there are articles in the Weekend Australian today arguing the same thing.

On a positive note, the fact that this is all over the mainstream media at the moment, will alert members of the general public about this so-called treatment and that it is controversial. The media blackout in Australia has been frustrating, to say the very least.

Thanks for the link.

The issue is certainly getting some air time in the Courier Mail. It is good to hear that Dr Jillian Spencer is getting a swell of support.

I was very interested too in learning that Mareeba had a feral deer issue. I know that there have been large herds built up down south but not in FNQ.

FeralWoman · 01/02/2025 09:30

@Helleofabore The deer would make some good meals for those who like venison. That’s the only thing that feral deer are good for. Not sure why a pest would be placed in a reserve. Guess that they don’t want to horrify animal activists.

Feral, I hear you.

NotYourCisterinAus · 02/02/2025 11:39

And the good news is... Queensland is going ahead with its own review in defiance of the Federal government.

Well now. That is good news.

I wonder what will happen if the two reviews disagree?
