"Sharron Davies encourages Khelif and Lin’s opponents to challenge defeats"
A sane straight reporting article that even mentions Sex Matters.
Thats the second one this week.
I'm hoping if we pressure Viner she will do some serious investigative journalism into the IOC, the Sex Matters semina posted on the other thread was eyeopening as to the extent of the IOCs control over the media.

"A spokesperson for the IOC said: “All athletes participating in the boxing tournament of Paris 2024 comply with the competition’s eligibility and entry regulations, as well as all applicable medical regulations.”

Yes - because the regulations are wrong!

The spokesperson added: “The guidelines on athlete expression for Paris 2024 ... provide a framework for athletes and other Games participants to express their views during the Games and are fully in line with the guidelines implemented for Tokyo 2020 and the Winter Games Beijing 2022, which had provided new and increased opportunities to athletes.”

Yes - new and increased opportunities for male athletes in female competitions.

V encouraging to see the Guardian covering this though as a straight non biased piece of journalism.

I didn't realise that about East German female athletes full of testosterone and the health problems/ deaths as a result. So sad for females taking testosterone with no idea of the risks.

Hope the legal cases get started asap to stop doctors prescribing any more of it. Instead they need to be researching how best to support female detransitioners- particularly the inevitable cases where some will need to detransition due to health risks, but won't want to... 😫😢

InvisibleBuffy · 09/08/2024 07:40

Interesting. We'd not have seen anything close to this in the Guardian a few years ago.

kiterunning · 09/08/2024 07:47

Wow that's incredible from the Guardian!

Datun · 09/08/2024 08:01

Maybe the sight of men punching the shit out of women with the backing of the IOC has finally crystallised the issue.

It is the logical end game of being able to change passports, but many, if not most, probably people didn't think it would come to this.

How many times have we heard, that won't happen? Whilst thinking that it will, it has.

Knowing exactly how far some men will go to screw women over has been a central theme of FWR.

biddyboo · 09/08/2024 08:08

The BBC has written an article that is attempting to be more balanced as well https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/crlr8gp813ko.amp

It's not perfect as it does contain a quote saying sex isn't exclusively binary 😕 It does also quote the wonderful Emma Hilton though.

With this article, and the one in the guardian, it does seem as if there is a shift now on how this is being reported. Although this truly terrible piece also appeared in the Guardian yesterday https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/aug/08/paris-olympics-culture-wars-russia-west?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

The author did get ratioed on twitter though.

Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif

What does science tell us about boxing’s gender row?

Research is shedding light on different chromosomal make-ups and what advantages they may bring to sport.

FunnyLady27 · 09/08/2024 09:14

From The G yesterday by Nathalie Tocci “All hell broke loose after a viral disinformation campaign about Khelif’s gender identity. False claims about Khelif triggered well-meaning (albeit misinformed) expressions of concern for female sports, but mostly an ill-willed campaign to denigrate the IOC, which had accepted Khelif into the women’s competition”. Full article https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/aug/08/paris-olympics-culture-wars-russia-west So plenty of GI captured Guardian Journos still banging on about how unfair to the two XY Boxers, its unbeleivable that their respective governing bodies dont carry out biological sex tests to clarify, if they are among the extremely tiny number of DSDs that dont benefit then what’s the issue with doing the tests. And, harsh as it may be and painful for individuals, surely a simple solution is to make DSD a condition that rules people out of either m or f competition and create a separate class for them, of course there wouldn’t be enough! But why bother when they can simply put them in with the women who dont really matter anyway! So sick of this.

A global conflict is playing out at the Paris Olympics – just not in the way we think | Nathalie Tocci

From a row about an allegedly blasphemous biblical scene to a controversial boxing match, the Games have been hijacked by culture wars between Russia and the west, says Guardian columnist Nathalie Tocci

NotBadConsidering · 09/08/2024 09:18

I’m no expert on boxing regulations, nor on the rules of the IOC, but, as a martial artist myself, this much is clear: once both athletes had entered the ring, the time for contesting gender was over.

Ok, let’s put you in the ring with a man and see you just crack on without contesting his sex then🙄

LilyBartsHatShop · 09/08/2024 09:25

Oh wow Emma Hilton being quoted in a BBC article. That has made my day.
Remember when she was anonymous on Twitter due to vulnerability to abuse and credible threats to her career?
I'm feeling more optimistic right now than I have in a while.

Is a cheek swab really all that's needed? Wouldn't that be the start of the process rather than the end?

lordloveadog · 09/08/2024 10:12

Sex Matters held a media briefing yesterday. It looks like some journalists were actually taking notice.

Respect and thanks to the wonderful women at Sex Matters!

Is a cheek swab really all that's needed? Wouldn't that be the start of the process rather than the end?

The excellent sports scientist Ross Tucker, suggests that cheek swabs should be seen as a screen. They will be accurate for the majority of the population and athletes but for the tiny minority, they will indicate the need for further investigation. Apart from anything else, this would deter the cynical agents in certain sports like boxing from seeking out these children to turn them into elite athletes in the wrong category.

hihelenhi · 09/08/2024 10:25

I still think the BBC article is obfuscating. It doesn't seem to mention the specific DSD that's suspected, for instance. Still, far better than previous.

The Guardian one is suitably vague, and is still pushing the idea that the tests were carried out by the "discredited" IBA, not two independently accredited labs. So it is still highly misleading.

I very much do remember it as it was on all the news and the subject of much lampooning in comedy, particularly by Clive James who alternated poking fun at this or the PLO and Yassah Arafat.
Good times.
On the otherhand, not so much about the impact on other female athletes.

Its multiple times better than it used to be, sorry if you cant see anything to be pleased about, but I can.
The difference between 2018 and 2024 is marked.
I prefer to clebrate gains rather than ignore them, or run them down

Eh? Sorry if you felt I was "running them down" or "ignoring" them, of course it's better than it used to be, nobody's attacking you for posting it. I'm just noting their usual obfuscations and expressing my frustrations with them, not you. It's like pulling teeth sometimes with these formerly respected news outlets, and it really shouldn't be difficult for them to write about this clearly.

Yes exactly!

And anything involving Maya Forstater was verboten.
Its worying that anyone might forget how intense and scary it was.
I certainly remember the impact on my life and the ongoing fallout.
