Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

nothing about Scotland surprises me any more. Total fucking clown land. Having said that, it appears that Sophie has been suspended, pending investigation-who would have thought it? A candidate so bonkers they give even the greens pause for thought....

Plonkydonkey · 28/05/2024 20:06

Link not working

INeedAPensieve · 28/05/2024 20:22

I think the Scottish union for education is trying to highlight this issue as well. It's awful. It's completely ignoring all of the recommendations of the Cass report.

apples24 · 29/05/2024 08:59

Really worries me, two nieces impacted and my own kids about to start school.

Eastcoastie · 29/05/2024 11:19

This massively worries me. The scot gov are literally brain washing our children

Thank you Betsy & Cake this one passed me by.

Coming to English schools soon once Labour win the election.

mach2 · 31/05/2024 21:11

At least 60% of secondary schools are not upholding single-sex toilets and 86% require or encourage pupils to use preferred pronouns

Compelled speech. I always knew that telling people what they can't say would morph into telling them what they must say.

Christinapple · 01/06/2024 02:07

Want to talk about brainwashing and indoctrination in Scottish schools?

How about the fact it's 2024 and primary school pupils are still being force-fed Christianity and having to pray? Isn't that a little out-dated now?

Work in a school. 900 kids. Have no idea what any of their preferred pronouns are because it's never ever been mentioned. Asked a colleague at another school. Ditto. I think there might be some frothing hyperbole going on here.

Ah, so it’s not happening at two schools, so it’s not happening anywhere.

Its very worrying that this is the level of logic that some teachers possess.

And, worse, that a teacher would wave away such a grave failure in education and safeguarding.

"Work in a school" Is that supposed to add credence to your argument? You could be a dinner lady or a cleaner and say "I work in a school" it really doesn't suggest that you must know everything that's going on in every single school.

Well, it's not happening in 2 of the high schools in a fairly major authority so my assumption is that unless we've purposely been kept out of the loop it is unlikely to be a requirement or whatever elsewhere.
The vast majority of pupils that I encounter do not care in the slightest. Its not an issue for any of them. Never heard a single pupil ever correct anyone using a pronoun, unless done in a mocking 'did you just assume my gender?' fashion.
Either way, have fun with your culture wars, yeah.

A correct statement. I might be or I might not be. Not gonna prove anything to you, no point, it's the Internet. Its not a place for logic or rational thought. That much has been evident for years.
Someone up thread said "The Scottish Government are literally brainwashing our children". Remarkable. They can brainwash children but decided to use it for this topic as opposed to maths or English which they would get an awful lot more credit for.
Someone else described Scotland as a total clownland. Hey, good stuff, counter point, England is a racist hell hole with backward thinking gammons who consistently fail the intelligence test that is an election. Brexit is working so well yeah. Is that a fair counterpoint or utterly ridiculous hyperbole? Who am I to judge.

You've fallen for the culture war. Its a distraction from actual pressing issues. The NHS, global warming, the economy, housing, food, water, energy. Don't worry though because the telegraph (owned by the tax dodging Barclay brothers) and the mail (owned by the tax dodging Viscount Rothermere) have helped you get angry at this. You're the mark, you've fallen for it. Put a FOI in to councils and ask for number of pupils, in anonymised data, in each school who have pronouns different from that on their birth certificate. If its more than 1% I will eat my hat.

No pronouns are recorded on a birth certificate, only sex.

And even one child insisting that all the pupils and staff members they come into contact with treat them as anything other than their birth sex (including in toilets, changing rooms and sports) impacts on a lot of people.

Why don't you read the full report? It's based on FoI requests to the local authorities, so either they are lying or your anecdotal take is worthless. Which Scottish LA are you in?

55% of schools said they operate mixed sex changing and that is conservative as some didn't provide enough info. Do you think teenage girls should be changing with boys?

Eastcoastie · 01/06/2024 10:20

Teaching kids with a penis that they might be girls is brainwashing. And same the other way. As per the CASS report, this can cause harm to the child. It is a requirement from the Scottish Government for pupils to receive teaching on gender as part of their Relationships and Sexual Health lessons.

Teaching a child maths is not known to cause harm.

That's quite the rant considering I only suggested that your anecdote might not apply to every school! in the country. Did I say children are being brainwashed? Or that Scotland is clownland? Why am I responsible for that? Does disagreeing with you about the reliability of your evidence make me a backward thinking, Brexit voting, telegraph reading angry person? I'm none of those things! But you sound pretty angry and deluded.
Hats are best served with custard btw.

Thats not true. Possibly in Christian schools but if you send your kids to a Christian school then you have kind of signed up for that.
Would you send your kids to an Islamic school and complain about them being taught about the prophet?

Fariha31 · 01/06/2024 16:31

Would you tell a black person fighting against racism that they are engaging in a distraction or a culture war?
Why do your think thats ok to say to women fighting for their rights?

That’s unusual- I wonder whereabouts you are. My kids attend a large school in SE England (1700 pupils). There are a lot of kids using pronouns that don’t match their sex. Lots of the teachers put their pronouns on their email signatures.

rogdmum · 02/06/2024 09:05

I would have thought by now we’d be past accusations like “frothing hyperbole.” How completely unhelpful to the many families who have their lives turned upside down by Scottish schools. Would be good to know which council is ignoring the ScotGov guidance in favour of a cautious holistic approach as recommended by the Cass Review

Igneococcus · 02/06/2024 11:46

Goodness, I had my first ever deletion in almost 20 years on MN.
I'm not sure what the problem was though.
