Libraries promoting body mutilation as “joy” in Norfolk

Anyone here from Norfolk?

Norwich Millennium Library has a display of “Trans Joy”, apparently aimed at children & young people, which IMHO promotes body mutilation & self harm of women & girls & glorifies drug use. In the wake of the Cass Report it’s incredibly irresponsible.

It includes images of hypodermic needles for injecting testosterone, a packer & mastectomy scars, with the slogan “Self-made men play God right”.

Most disturbing is a small figurine of a woman’s lower half, cut off at waist & knees, bearing what appears to be a hysterectomy scar & what is either a pseudo-phallus ( an appendage made from a flap of tissue removed from the woman’s arm or thigh, rolled up and sewn to the groin to mimic a penis ) or a hypertrophied clitoris, one of the often painful effects of testosterone on the female body.

The display is accessible to children as the cabinets stand only a couple of feet high, designed for a child’s eye line and it’s placed next to the 8-14 book section. The cases are by the entrance - not noticeable when you go in but inescapable when you leave.

I can’t believe someone okayed this. If it was promoting anorexia or cutting or glorifying steroid abuse to children and teenagers, we’d all see it for what it is. Instead, it’s promoting self-mutilation under the banner of “Trans Joy”.

It’s especially irresponsible in the week the Cass Review revealed how poor the evidence base for so-called “gender affirming care” is and how little followup there has been to assess regret and de-transition rates.

Ive been trying to find a contact for the head of Norfolk Library Services - it’s a woman called Kerry Murray, who is also the Safeguarding Lead! But I can’t find any email listing for her.

Any suggestions?

Sharing images with trepidation: it’s a horror show!

That is horrific and macabre. I can’t believe that it’s accessible to children! Absolutely tone deaf in the wake of the Cass report. Definitely flag it up! Maybe the local press will take up the story. It’s one thing to have this on display at an adult-only venue but it is just so inappropriate to be pushing this stuff at children.

Chrysanthemum5 · 12/04/2024 09:37

That is unbelievable- definitely complain to the council. Given the huge numbers of girls who believe they are trans and who are vulnerable to being moved into surgery etc this is especially harmful

takemeawayagain · 12/04/2024 09:40

Good god that is all very disturbing.

Karensalright · 12/04/2024 09:41

Complain to your MP and copy in every elected member to the local authority.

Velvian · 12/04/2024 09:42

@CarobBean72 , email addresses are [email protected]

That is absolutely appalling OP. Is there a local women's group who might join with you to protest against it? Really dreadful and the time is now with Cass to get it thoroughly stamped on.

SteveTheTroll · 12/04/2024 09:47

I'm in Norfolk, not far from Norwich and visit often. That display has been there for a couple of weeks now. I seem to remember them appealing for submissions for it. Something to do with a Museum of Transology iirc.

heldinadream · 12/04/2024 09:51

I've just checked Twitter - they are on there and there's a post about this display, it's part of the trans day of visibility which was a couple of weeks ago. No comments on the post. In case anyone would like to comment...

Norfolk & Norwich Millennium Library on X: "Tomorrow is Transgender Day of Visibility and we are currently very happy hosts of the Trans Day of Visibility Gallery by Norwich Trans Pride. Pop in, it is well worth a look 🌈 t.co/xFjgNyQ4b0" / X (twitter.com)

report it to the police as a hate crime. I'm not joking.

Yes. Norwich Women’s Rights Group - part of WRN - & WRNNorfolk put out a press release yesterday.
We think it’s an exhibition for the Easter Holidays.
Have also emailed local county councillors.

Worldgonecrazy · 12/04/2024 11:43

I don’t think that exhibition would encourage anyone who had gender dysphoria. It’s awful and sends a completely different message to the one it thinks it is sending. Trans = drugs and mutilation is not the great message the TRAs think it is.

What CC said. Just appalling. 😡

AtrociousCircumstance · 12/04/2024 11:45

This dark evidence of child abuse propaganda will be catalogued as the madness of our era in future.

Yes please do complain and with reference to the Cass report.

But young children who see it cannot evaluate what they are seeing properly, and it has a malign influence on them before they have the reason and boundaries to deal with it. This is why all sorts of awful stuff on the internet and social media is having such a devastating effect on young people. This should not be in a public affirmative display that youngsters can see.
FFS young people are being influenced to kill themselves, they can certainly be influenced by something like this to normalise being 'trans', and normalisation is on the road to attraction.

ScarlettSunset · 12/04/2024 12:28

It's a very disturbing display.
I wouldn't want any child seeing that, and especially not in such a public space.

SinnerBoy · 12/04/2024 12:32

I agree with everybody, it's awful and disturbing and in no way fit for children.

Please let us know how you get on, CarobBean72

Chewyspree · 12/04/2024 20:39

I saw it too. I’ve emailed them about it. It was vile.

maltravers · 12/04/2024 20:57

Grim. I wouldn’t want to see that myself, let alone children seeing it. Totally inappropriate and wrong.

Newnamepls · 12/04/2024 22:12

I’m in Norfolk, I haven’t seen this as haven’t been to the millennium library recently but this is absolutely horrible. Definitely complain about it!

Newnamepls · 12/04/2024 22:15

Also, I agree this doesn’t show what the TRAs think it does. There is nothing joyful about it. If anything, it’s very disturbing and so seems to have come from an unhappy or disturbed place. I had anorexia as a teenager and spent a lot of time on tumblr and pro-ana sites. This reminds me of the sort of content on there to be honest.

BeyondHumanKenneth · 12/04/2024 22:22

I second getting the local press involved.

Chewyspree · 12/04/2024 22:24

Local press won’t care.

They may given that Cass is in the news.

AcheyBreaky · 13/04/2024 08:57

I used to go to the millennium library every week when my now teen dc were small. The children's section was always staffed by a male wearing a dress. I have no idea how he ID'd, I never asked, but it certainly doesn't surprise me that the place is fully TRA.

Abeona · 13/04/2024 09:08

Can you point out how incredibly damaging this is to same-sex attracted boys and girls, with the implication that it's better to change your body with drugs (that will leave you sterile and with crumbling bones) than to love your healthy body and your sexuality?

The latent homophobia is shocking.
