Is this what we need to vote Labour? I was genuinely going to rip up my "never kissed a tory" badge

Now apply it to women, Wes (the real, boring, old fashioned MK1 cervixy kind) and you've got my vote back.

Coconutmeg · 10/04/2024 09:25

I do feel relieved to see the labour health sec say that

Xiaoxiong · 10/04/2024 09:26

I want to see this view coming from the top - Starmer, Angela Rayner etc. because the day before the Cass Review was released Annalise Dodds was still saying "Labour would bring in a full, no-loopholes ban on conversion practices."

I don't think Labour has yet joined the dots to realise that the Cass Report has some bearing on what they are calling "conversion practices". Or if they have, they need to make that clear.

LenaLamont · 10/04/2024 09:32

Wow, somebody wants to be Prime Minister when he grows up!

LogicLoverLlama · 10/04/2024 09:36

Yvette Cooper, shadow home secretary, saying the same thing

Yvette Cooper's son is a tra, right? If so this is extra encouraging.

LenaLamont · 10/04/2024 09:54

Yes, Cooper and Balls have a frothing TRA offspring.

MagpiePi · 10/04/2024 10:00

Is it going to be 'yes, we've got to protect children, but some women still have penises'?

Coffeelovr · 10/04/2024 10:04

How does his statement square with Labour's policy to ban all forms of conversion therapy given that Cass recommends a holistic approach?

reframing the phrase conversion therapy presumably and being very specific about what it does and does not include.

My sense is that Starmer will have too many related questions to answer around self ID, his attitude towards women, the conversion therapy bill to speak to this right now. WS paving the way perhaps? I am very relieved that children will be more protected as a result of these recommendations. The abuse of children been the worse part of the thing for me. The women question is really important, related, but separate for me.

In relation to gender transition, once you accept that a holisitic approach is required for children, surely that implies mental health issues are potentially involved. And once you accept that, why would that not potentially be a factor in adults too?

potentially is deliberate

OvaHere · 10/04/2024 10:43

Before Streeting gets to walk the golden bridge he needs to acknowledge the part he played in witch-hunting women who were raising this and other issues many years back and having them thrown out of the party.

PronounssheRa · 10/04/2024 10:47

I don't particularly trust streeting, his involvement with the Labour against transphobia Facebook group needs to be explained. He is also making some pretty clear noises about privatisation of elements of the NHS. As for yvette, she blames the culture wars as the reason they didn't listen to people raising concerns.

flyingbuttress43 · 10/04/2024 10:52

I'm having difficulty seeing how Labour can implement the report considering that they still don't seem to know what a woman is.

MorrisZapp · 10/04/2024 10:53

What is the point in campaigning for change if when the change comes we're all 'yeah but you used to be one of the bad guys'.

I want u turns. I want reverse ferrets. I want everyone given the chance to stroll over to the side of reason. Or what's the point of all of that effort?

I 100% agree

which isn't in itself a bad idea

PermanentTemporary · 10/04/2024 10:56

They've clearly agreed the way forward if both WS and YC are saying the same thing. Tbh I was OK with voting Labour anyway so clearly it's enough for me.

I'd imagine a huge chunk of Labour MPs are incredibly relieved to have this report.

RoyalCorgi · 10/04/2024 10:57

The absolute chutzpah of Streeting and Cooper in claiming to support the Cass findings is breathtaking. It's as if the past five years, with all the hounding of gc women, the bullying of Rosie Duffield, the threats to expel WPUK and LWD members from the party, never happened.

I'm still waiting for the apology.

teawamutu · 10/04/2024 11:04

I'm all for golden bridges, but I want the Labour leadership to actually CROSS it.

To stand next to Rosie Duffield with a sheepish expression and hand extended.

I want u-turns, but we also need explanations because this is the party who want to be our next government. I need to understand why Labour got this so wrong and what they will do to prevent the party operating in the same way again.

So

Why was streeting a member of that Facebook group and what was his level of involvement

Does cooper realise now that dismissing alternative views as culture wars was the wrong thing to do

Have any of them spoken to or offered support and apologies to Rosie Duffield.

I could go on.

Labour also needs to reflect upon the ridculousness of the new Scottish Hate Crime Law, and JKR's media grabbing interventions - and apply some serious joined up critical thinking before I'll really trust them again. What is apparent is that we need clarity around 'Sex' and legislation which refelcts that - not legislation which further muddies the waters.

Exactly this. But also they're creating a gap between 'protecting vulnerable children' - many of whom are girls wanting to identify out of being female - and protecting women from older men wanting to transition into it.

They need to sort their thinking out and come up with some sort of logic and cohesion. Which is going to involve some uncomfortable scrutiny beneath the layers of being kind, progressive and down wiv da kids.

Because we need to know that people have listened and learned.

What I want from Streeting is some iteration of 'sorry I got this wrong, I have demonised women in the past who tried to raise the issues. I know now this was a mistake and ill judged. I'm committed to the findings of the Cass report going forward and will start listening'

Not ' Everyone before Hilary Cass was a culture war bigot so how could I have listened to what they were saying' which seems to be what he's going for.
