This is a horrific story. It should be huge. Why am I only seeing it in the 'problematic' DM. You'd think the Guardian would be all over it. Little girls fitted with intimate medical devices designed for use in women after childbirth! No consent from either the children or their parents.

Canada have been doing it for decades to indigenous women particularly in the northern territories, too. When you look at population density of those communities in Canada and Greenland, it's really chilling to see how many indigenous northern races have been almost wiped out with this barbaric practice.
I thought "forced sterilisation" came under eugenics laws and yet respectable-seeming "civilised" countries are doing it to their own people. It's evil. And it's mainly being done to women.

I didn't know the Americans have long had designs on Greenland.

The Nordics have a history of discrimination against arctic nomads within their territories. Sami women were also sterilised.

A Swedish friend of mine says they have a ruthless streak because they were dirt poor up to WW2. There was little tolerance for anyone who didn't measure up.

Mind bogglingly awful for the individual women in this story.

This does not surprise me about Denmark, I am afraid. It is not the open and welcoming society it purports to be, not at all.

That is just shocking as read the article just now. What those young girls went though and the pain and shame and treated so awful. They must have been so confused and so many did not even know had the device in them years later hence all the pain and infection and not been able to have children. Just shocking how those women were treated, trying to wipe out their culture also.

What a toxic mess of racism and mysiogny. I hope they get their apology and compensation.

I don’t even understand how anyone has a conversation like this. “Oh greenlanders, yeah just pop a coil in, don’t worry if they are kids!”. You must really have dehumanised someone to think thats fine.

I wonder whether the handful of men that approved in the comments would have approved of vasectomies? I’d be genuinely interested, but don’t do comments on articles.

This happened from 1967 - 1975. It's horrific, but before we all go decrying Denmark as it is today, we should remember that equally horrific things happened to women in a number of western countries including our own.
