Inuit women and forced contraception

Heartbreaking story of Inuit women who had IUDs fitted without consent, sometimes when as young as 11/12. This was in 1960.

Doctors hailed it as a 'success' at the time, because it lowered the birth rate.

Current investigation trying to assess whether this is 'genocide' or not.

Wow, how awful. Those poor girls as they were, and women robbed of the choice to become mothers.

ThereIbledit · 01/10/2022 20:13

It's absolutely appalling isn't it. Not just the birth control genocide aspect of it, but the sexual assault of children, the fact that being fitted with an IUD at such a young age caused pain and health issues for life. I'm devastated for them.

Yes, appalling for many reasons. Realising now I should have maybe added a content warning to the link.

That is appalling. I was completely unaware, thanks for posting such an important story.
It's unbelievably cruel.

StillWeRise · 01/10/2022 21:13

that's really awful
in Denmark, too- I had assumed it would be Canada

Denmark had an extensive empire and also was 7th in the world for slavery. They had two islands in the west indies and worked the slaves so hard they just dropped dead and never reproduced so they had to keep on importing more. Also a colony in India up to 1850. Remember this when lovely Denmark is shoved down your throat.

This is the kind of atrocity that happens when a political elite get powerful enough to start enforcing their beliefs on others, and declaring groups of people subhuman and 'other' for their beliefs and cultures instead of being able to cope with multi faith, multi cultural tolerance and equality.

TQ+ lobby I am looking at you. Because less 'right side of history' than 'oh for ffs, not this bit of history all over again'. 'Identifying' as not being colonialist doesn't change the reality.
