England hockey threatening women’s team with points deductions

It seems that women’s hockey teams in England are being threatened with points deductions if they withdraw players due to safety because the other side is fielding a TW. Sides are using TW to do drag flicks which given they’re men are much harder and faster than those done by women.

teams have been told if they come off the pitch due to concerns for their safety, they will be deducted points.

More light. Although I feel really sorry for the teams and women involved.

FigRollsAlly · 06/10/2023 17:32

WTAF!

Theeyeballsinthesky · 06/10/2023 17:32

I can’t imagine they feel able to complain either. I can’t think they’d get a sympathetic reception

Women, validate men with your bodies. No limits. Men must be permitted to break you and you must smile and not flinch or try to protect yourself.

Honestly, it's like living in some vile farce at this point. I hope the entire team resign. Or sue.

BCCoach · 06/10/2023 17:38

EH haven’t revised their transgender policy since 2018 and the FIH (the world governing body) are asleep at the wheel. You would have thought they would see what UCI, FINA, World Athletics, World Rugby etc have done (finally) and realise that the tide has well and truly turned, but apparently not.

Topofthemountain · 06/10/2023 17:40

Ahh, the self-fulfilling prophecy that everyone is fine with it, because no one complains.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 06/10/2023 17:44

Exactly that @Topofthemountain
sports body writes guidance that says men can play on women’s teams

women start to express unhappiness

Sports body says any team complaining will lose points

women shut up

sports body “see women aren’t complaining, they’re clearly fine with it”

Charming. I’ve no idea how these women continue to be honest.

The teams who are actively fielding trans players are doing so purely because it is to their advantage to do so. I don’t feel sorry for them in the slightest - this is women throwing other women under the bus to gain an unsporting advantage.

Absolutely spot on, BCCoach. Disgraceful behaviour. Such a contrast to the Angling team.

I think the other teams should get together and threaten to sue for sex discrimination.

Helleofabore · 06/10/2023 17:51

I wondered when Hockey would start having to make the hard decisions. There is absolutely no way that male players are safe on the field in a female competition.

I am sorry for all women and girls who are caught up here and have not been able to achieve traction. I hope that this will force open changes.

I’m not talking about the teams fielding men of course. What a strange take.

Do hockey teams at this level have to have insurance against player injuries? Surely any insurers should have something to say about this

Wowzel · 06/10/2023 17:55

I remember playing in mixed teams, there was often the potential for injury if the men went in hard against the women, and the ball goes so much faster

Excellent point. The teams affected should start by asking about the insurance provisions. I would imagine that any organisation or person who holds a sporting event has to have insurance. Even my local softball group has to be insured.

Sorry, I misunderstood as well!
But BCCoach's criticism of the women's teams who are fielding men is absolutely valid.

BCCoach · 06/10/2023 19:18

@JacquelinePot I don't know about hockey, but in my sport all events are covered by the governing body's (in this case English Hockey) insurance as are all our coaching and training activities. We as a club don't need any separate insurance policies for our training and competitive activities provided we comply with our governing body (BC's) rules for running events. I believe this is the same for most established sports.

JacquelinePot · 06/10/2023 19:20

In which case, I wonder if the bodies have notified the insurers that men are now in the women's teams. I would think that would change the risk profile

Froodwithatowel · 06/10/2023 19:46

I remember at school a teacher during a staffing crisis trying to have a mixed sex hockey match for a PE lesson. Within a few minutes all the girls just retreated off the pitch, the boys were whacking the ball around with such force. We were about 11 at the time.

I suppose the answer is that both teams just field an entire team of men identifying as women and the women identifying as women leave them alone to get on with it.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 06/10/2023 19:51

The thing is, hockey does actually have formal mixed hockey with 5 players of each sex on each team and then the GK can be either sex so it’s not that they ‘just want to play’, no they want to play on the women’s team

I have thought for a while that the only way to stop this sort of thing is for women to refuse to be bullied by declining to play. The anglers did it and their governing body has changed the rules. The women shouldn't have to but at the same time it's a good way to learn about standing up for yourself. That young woman in volley ball has been left with what sounds like life changing injuries. Women and girls deserve better.

Truthlikeness · 06/10/2023 21:29

That's really shocking. Before I quit my team sport over this issue, I felt the only thing I could offer my players was the chance to come off (no questions asked) if they felt unsafe. Now even that has been removed.

Sexnotgender · 06/10/2023 21:31

Fuck sake, it’s about SAFETY.

Froodwithatowel · 06/10/2023 21:37

Apparently though it's largely about male entitlement and chauvenism.

PermanentTemporary · 06/10/2023 21:45

Hockey is one of the sports where I've known a woman who got quite a serious injury at a match (my boss, fractured facial bone, hospital attendanceand surgical review). I can't believe EH haven't sorted this out yet.

HagoftheNorth · 06/10/2023 22:17

My friend’s dd had a very serious concussion as a result of being hit by a hockey ball. Her parents were warned that she may never recover - fortunately she did, but she was away from school for months. The additional power generated by that ball being hit by a boy rather than another girl…. Well, the consequences don’t bear thinking about
