Didn't know the Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium was a marginalised and vulnerable transwoman. Green Party of course. Telegraph article, archive link.

Then reality's a bully. <shrug>

You can't require the rest of the world to lie through their teeth to try and keep such fragile people happy, and you can't keep reality in a box away from them. You can only provide them individually with the emotional support necessary to learn to be less fragile, less dependent on and overly entitled towards others in requiring this kind of care and labour from them (even from total strangers), and to cope with reality with less distress.

FrancescaContini · 06/10/2023 16:32

Who cares what this Belgian person thinks? Can’t believe it’s been given column space. The person also contradicts themself by talking about having the hide of a rhinoceros but finding Rishi’s statement of fact hurtful 🤷‍♀️

😶

I went to a recording of the news quiz last night where as you would expect the tories were roundly mocked for a lot of their party conference nonsense over the last week or so.

There was a noticeable dampening of the applause and laughter in the radio 4 audience when the transwoman on the panel starting having a go at sunak about this. The BBC panel of comedians was all in but the audience far less so.

IcakethereforeIam · 06/10/2023 17:05

@PurpleWhirple I was there too! I agreed to go because I thought it was a recording of the Now Show 😃 I took against the News Quiz ages ago, and last night's panel did nothing to change my opinion. Smug gits the lot of 'em.

Just another man attacking anyone standing up for women's rights to their identity, their privacy and safety.

AtrociousCircumstance · 06/10/2023 17:19

Speaking the truth is not bullying.

Gaslighting and performative victim hood is manipulative bullying.

This doesn’t surprise me. Whatever your political leaning, everyone knows that RS was just stating what everyone knows to be a fact. It doesn’t make you a Tory or in favour of Tory politics to agree with a factual statement made by our Tory PM. It’s puerile to think in this way but then many comedians are puerile. It sounds as if the ones on the R4 show need to catch up with the public mood on the issue.

NoddyNidder · 06/10/2023 18:11

I lurk a lot on this board and have also been several times to Thursday night recordings of the various Friday R4 comedy shows. The average audience age every time I've been must have been well above 50. A sea of silvering hair. In stark contrast to the panel of 'comedians'. Three or four decades of sexism and life experience as a woman can make you pretty terfy. Plus the menopause can really make the scales fall.

I'm not at all surprised at the lukewarm audience reaction. I wonder if the BBC will edit in one of the fake rounds of enthusiastic applause/laughter they get the audience to do at the very start under the guise of 'checking the volume levels'.

CrossPurposes · 06/10/2023 18:15

Bully is another word that appears to have had its meaning changed.

NoddyNidder · 06/10/2023 18:25

It's on shortly. I must have a listen. Interesting move to put a TW comedian on a very 'talky' radio show as there are no visuals, only a voice and voices don't lie.

IcakethereforeIam · 06/10/2023 18:40

Actually, the tw, Bethany Black, seemed to have a very feminine voice to me. They also seemed quite nice. From a quick Google they seemed to have had serious mental health issues in their early life. I wish 'em all the best.

I think we all know who the actual bullies are . . .

IcakethereforeIam · 06/10/2023 18:49

I googled de Sutter and read an article of his about how girls are held back, I got serious cognitive dissonance. It was all about how gender stereotypes were rubbish. I..I..well..can he hear himself!?

I hope Sunak tells him to fuck off.

PermanentTemporary · 06/10/2023 20:37

I thought the audience seemed very enthusiastic about Bethany Black's comments when I listened on the radio.... [now wondering if it was the same soundtrack] and I agree about their voice. Hope transition has made their life better.

I agree. I hope they have a peaceful and happy life. But I do not think the fact that they are or were vulnerable gives them a free pass from criticism.

This person is making their living with jokes about toilets and sport and women losing their jobs over pronouns.

Forgive me if I did not find that funny on the day when I saw a traumatised Jo Phoenix break down giving tearful evidence because she believes women should have their own toilets and sports and pronouns. And who as a teenager suffered the kind of traumas most of us only see in our worst nightmares

As ever the sensitivity and 'be kind' only seems to run one way.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 06/10/2023 20:41

Sutter was a gynaecologist??

😬🤮

literalviolence · 06/10/2023 21:05

Any man who demands to be called a woman is a bully and a denier of women's lived experiences. So no, I don't care what de Sutter says because I think 'she' is a despicable human being who doesn't bother to check 'her' own privilege. De Sutter is just having a tantrum because someone is trying to put the brakes on De Sutter's disgusting demands.

IcakethereforeIam · 06/10/2023 21:09

De Sutter might still be practising for all I know.

@NoddyNidder completely agree with you. Black might be one of these semi-mythical tw who 'just wants to pee' and who totally passes. But, they're holding the door for those that aren't and clearly thinks that'll never happen, or will happen anyway or whatever they tell themselves. If Jo ever occurs to them I suspect they think, at best, that she's brought it all on herself and she should have been kinder.

I didn't laugh, I didn't find it at all funny. Women were only mentioned when Sunak was quoted otherwise it was all about the trans.

PaperWalkAndTalk · 07/10/2023 13:53

The reaction to his comments are sinister, and it's very similar to the outrage over JKR, say something moderate and sensible that no one can argue against and then attack them heavily.

It sends out a message to everyone else to keep quiet on the subject.

What though on hamely fare we dine,

Gie fools their silks, and knaves their wine;
A Man’s a Man for a’ that...

Farewell, Rabbie Burns. You had a good run, but we regret to inform you that you have now been cancelled. (We're still going to celebrate Burns Night because there's alcohol, but henceforth your works will be attributed to Emma Watson.)
