'A hustings to discuss issues relating to women's rights ahead of the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election has been cancelled after the venue cited the group failed to "present a balanced view to the local electorate".
Women Won't Wheesht (WWW) invited candidates to a public meeting at Number 18, a venue in Rutherglen. The group have been at the forefront of protests against the Scottish Government's Gender Recognition Reform (GRR) Bill that heads to court this week and have been unapologetic about their gender critical views, however they claim they are "a women's rights organisation and are politically non-partisan".'

'The venue in Rutherglen has been accused of 'unlawful discrimination' and the women's rights group say they will be seeking legal action'

Inviting all the candidates isn’t fair? they are thick as shit, aren’t they?

wonder what the candidates think?

'All 14 candidates were issued the same invitation to attend. 6 of them accepted'

AFAIK, only the Tory candidate and Collette from ISP had planned to attend. Rest of them too gutless.

X post, I stand corrected.

Well, if it’s in the press they’ll have to come, won’t they? It’ll look bad to dismiss women. How important are the by election, it’s not long til the GE? I assume parties are trying to say this doesn’t matter but it could be useful to force them to pay attention?

stealtheatingtunnocks · 18/09/2023 21:37

I’m not politically astute like Paxmen, obviously

ArabeIIaScott · 18/09/2023 21:39

They are looking for another venue and plan to still hold the hustings, it seems.

Am considering renting a flat in Hamilton so I can go!

HagoftheNorth · 18/09/2023 21:45

I love the irony WWW highlights - a discussion including how women’s voices are silenced is… silenced

Hope they can find a venue to host - should be an interesting event

GoatsareGOAT · 18/09/2023 21:50

FFS
they should take brollies & relocate to Cuningar Loop - some nice coverage of completely normal & sensible viewpoints forced into the rain might make a few more people wake up

ArabeIIaScott · 18/09/2023 22:05

Rutherglen Town Hall is nice.

I must be missing something here, but I didn't know there was an obligation to present a 'balanced view' at a hustings. Don't people present their own party's view and get questions thrown at them? I know WWW aren't a political party (yet?) but I'd have thought they are entitled to discuss matters from their own perspective and not anyone else's.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 19/09/2023 07:15

Women don’t get to have a point of view in Scotland. Let alone discuss it. That’s what the message is here, isn’t it?

PurBal · 19/09/2023 07:26

@Rightsraptor if a group host a hustings they have to invite all the candidates, so for example other groups I know have hosted hustings: politics students at a sixth form college, local farmers groups, churches. Like WWW the members are likely to ask questions pertaining to their own activities or local area. I don’t think the venue understand the law on this. I did hear of a church hustings being boycotted by the then incumbent because it was held at a church where the pastor said gay people should go to hell and it ended up being cancelled

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 19/09/2023 08:04

Oh for heaven’s sake

I hope they sue the shit out of the previous venue. It’s the only language these people seem to understand

ArabeIIaScott · 19/09/2023 17:38

Oh, goodness.

Seems the venue have reconsidered.

Event will go ahead on the 21st as planned.

These venues might actually start to realise soon that cancelling a load of women is not a good idea!

woo hoo!

Waitwhat23 · 19/09/2023 18:26

I suspect that someone has advised the venue about the legal aspects of this and they've done a hasty backtrack.

PriOn1 · 19/09/2023 18:26

Quite a fast turnaround! I hope it’s a sign that things are moving in the right direction!

Waitwhat23 · 19/09/2023 18:29

Katy Louden will be gutted. She's blocked so many women using a block list on Twitter that she won't be jumping at the prospect of women actually having the opportunity to ask her questions in person.

Froodwithatowel · 19/09/2023 18:39

They are absolutely terrified of those women being heard by the general public. It's as if those women are going to be letting important cats out of bags or something.

ArabeIIaScott · 19/09/2023 19:38

I think we should have some flash cards made to speed the whole thing up.

'No, you can't cancel us for believing that sex is real'
'It's discrimination'
'Equality Act'
'WORIADS'
'Call your lawyer'

I believe this is reason Munroe Bergdorf forbade women from wearing pussy hats on the Women's March.
