Labour canvasser today

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 15/07/2023 10:59

I'm in one the constituencies with a by-election coming up.

Just had a labour canvasser (woman, mid/late fifties) knock to ask if I was voting. I said yes I would be.

She asked if I knew who I was voting for. I asked if she knew what a woman was. I told her I was a single issue voter and that was the only issue that was going to decide how I voted.

Her response: "I believe a woman is anyone who believes themself to be a woman".

I told her in that case I have nothing else to say to her, and closed the door.

I would have loved to have actually put some of the issues to her (rapists in prisons, assaults in mixed sex spaces, including schools, destruction of women's sports etc) but my heart was already racing and I knew it would be like talking to a brick wall anyway.

But anyway - at least that's a clear pile in the eye for the whole 'it doesn't come up on the doorstep' nonsense.

So, I'm either voting Tory or SDP.

If you want to hear where the labour front bench may be going on this issue it is worth listening to Wes Streeting on the latest News Agents podcast. He talks about the need for single sex spaces, recognises the Scottish GRA is a mess and even admits that women were gaslit over the issue. He says that you can't just legislate and just hope for the best. It is a very interesting discussion and he says a lot of things I have not previously heard from the labour front bench.

Wes Streeting was part of a secret FB group, to drive GC women out of the party. He is a sinister little shit and a liar to boot.

FigRollsAlly · 15/07/2023 22:12

I am so disappointed in Wes Streeting. He comes across well and seems to talk sense but then I find out what a nasty piece of work he has been, and yet he has the gall to talk about women having been gaslit on gender. Yes, Wes, by you! Own it and apologise.

SunnyEgg · 15/07/2023 22:14

Labour TWAW men are so bloody depressing

Ladies and Gentlemen! Before your very Eyes! I present to you the Amazing Wes Streeting! Just five, yes Five, years ago he was the witchfinder general, seeking out and destroying Gender Critical members of the Labour Party but Now! Through the miracle of Transmogrification, no less! He has transformed himself into the very modern model of a modern reasonable Person. (Applause).

I prefer the openly TWAW ones to disingenuous twunts who pretend to support women's rights, while covertly trying to purge the Party of GC women.

Politicians lie all the time. How can she not realise what your views are and just lie to get your vote. So much hubris to believe they don't need your vote because their view on this matter is more important.

Thank you @Rudderneck ,very interesting.

Mandated pronouns [shudder] 😐

While I think this is a massive issue, I will still vote Labour. As is often said, you don't have to agree with everyone on everything and this is my only real point of disagreement with Labour policies. I will fight this corner when Labour are in power.

You will find it impossible to fight. Look what has happened.in Scotland where no regard whatsoever.is given to women's views. Starmer is in thrall to the trans movement in the same way as Sturgeon was.

Yesterday, the UCI banned transgender women from women's events. So this year, that's cycling, swimming and athletics fighting back against gender ideology. Before this, it was triathlon and rugby. Sports and the debacle in Scotland over Isla Bryson is highlighting what this gender business actually means in real life (not on the Internet). Imo, Starmer will just quietly drop "trans stuff " and get on with the economy, NHS, etc etc first. Which would be great, again imo.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 16/07/2023 00:22

That’s wildly optimistic. Sports are an exception because the unfairness is so apparent, and because men care about sport.

Most of the public have no clue about the infiltration of Stonewall/TRAs into the NHS, education, the Civil Service, the judiciary and even the military. There isn’t the same pressure to respect women’s rights as in sports. If Labour get in, self-ID will be introduced, possibly through statute, but definitely through allowing the conflation of sex and gender to the point that single sex is meaningless.

TheSingingBean · 16/07/2023 00:33

This is why I have joined the SDP and will be voting for them at the next election.

It is going to take decades to sort out our institutions and services up here. Decades. Even now, after the debacle over Isla Bryson, the SPS still hasn't finished the massively overdue review of its policy.

Results of consultations are ignored and concerns raised are dismissed with 'it was in the mandate'. Claims are made by our elected representatives that a vote for the SNP was an explicit vote for GRR.

Even with the recent push backs against the GRR and the downfall of Sturgeon, we're still having to fight tooth and nail. I can only hope that Starmer does drop it all.

Just five, yes Five, years ago he was the witchfinder general, seeking out and destroying Gender Critical members of the Labour Party but Now! Through the miracle of Transmogrification, no less! He has transformed himself into the very modern model of a modern reasonable Person. (Applause).

Remember Streeting is utterly despised by the TRA wing of the Labour party who regard him as a traitor.

Look Streeting has changed his stance on what he says. Can he be trusted? The fact is we don't know, but the TRA don't trust him either. He hasn't apologised for changing his rhetoric, one reason for that is politically that would undermine him. Yes it is dodgy, but it is good politics.

The fact is I think Streeting is most interested in doing whatever will win Labour most support and like Starmer he thinks there is a magic middle road to follow. {i also think he is personally ambitious]. The SNP got destroyed by going full self ID Streeting can see that. So is he planning to do it anyway? Really? I think he sees the flaws. Well there is going to be a massive row about the future plan, lets see what the Labour manifesto says.

The easy path for Streeting/Starmer might just say things to placate the TRA side and do nothing much to advance them. Because the TRA agenda is massively risky if you look at it logically it involves dodgy experiments on kids and trusting male criminals not to assault women and hoping no-one notices. Long term covering it up isn't going to work in the UK, it is already falling apart, because we have a diverse media along with the internet and lots of clever women tearing the lies apart. No debate is over and the Tras can't argue rationally.

Also remember one key fact Labour want to win more than one term. Sex/ gender questions are NOT going to settle the election in 2024. They may decide the election in 2028 or 2029. Every year there will be more trans criminals and more detrans people. Labour are promising they will cut crime and make women safer will they deliver on that? The Tories will make all of this a bigger issue in 2028 because they will have more evidence and will clearly they will campaign on a claim they will restore women's rights if they can. They might be on their 4th women leader by then, maybe a black woman. While Labour will still have Starmer.

Streeting knows all this. At the end of the day it comes down who Streeting is more scared of TRAs or those pesky women defending their rights? It is up to us to make sure it is the latter seem the ones you cannot afford to cross. So keep hassling canvassers or even better go to Hustings and ask questions. You know what is a women ?

So it is being slowly changed under this government

And you look at leftist ideology around the world and think Starmer will be different?

He also won’t be able to do much with your list, there’s no extra funding

Read posts from @Waitwhat23 and @Rudderneck

It is unbelievably easy to lose anything we have gained, albeit slowly

SunnyEgg · 16/07/2023 07:22

If Starmer wins he gets the mandate. It’s pretty simple.

By all means make a noise but so far only one side has said I can’t hear you, nothing there.

V true this.
We have seen lots of bad stuff happen through the capture of the numerous institutions that operate as part of our vast state - so vast that central government simply cannot oversee and stop it all (not that it’s tried that hard to I do admit). But our legislative framework has not been altered and has given some tools to push back. Starmer will alter this. We don’t know how because he won’t say. But his sympathies are very clear and they are not with biological women.

LoobiJee · 16/07/2023 07:53

AgathaSpencerGregson · 15/07/2023 18:49

The “something better” will most likely be a Badenoch led Tory party; which may well happen, at least if she’s put before the party membership as an option. She’s v popular at grassroots level by all accounts; her directness is appreciated.

Cates and Mordaunt are both more likely to become leader than Badenoch. The older male members have a crush on Mordaunt - her sword carrying in a cape at the coronation did wonders for her profile.

LoobiJee · 16/07/2023 08:12

explainthistomeplease · 15/07/2023 15:55

Chatting to the chap who'll be our Lib Dem candidate at the next election (I know him socially) and asked him the same question as OP did the canvasser. He totally dodged it and said he hadn't considered any of this 'gender stuff'. I didn't quite call him a liar. But told him I found that hard to believe, and that if true he'd better have some credible answers.

Even if that were true, it would mean that he lacks both the thinking ability and the motivation to recognise an attack on women’s right to privacy, dignity and fairness when it’s been all over the media for years and to put some thought into the matter, let alone take any action to protect women.

So, at the absolute best, he’s lazy and has no interest in women. The more likely position is that he’s both those things and also a coward and prepared to lie to your face.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 16/07/2023 08:13

SunnyEgg · 16/07/2023 08:05

It’s nonsense. What they mean is I want to vote labour and I don’t care that much about this stuff. They just don’t want to say that.

Floisme · 16/07/2023 08:13

I actually think Starmer might be more inclined to listen to sense if he wins a comfortable enough majority. At the moment he's afraid of alienating the TRA lobby but with the security of a win behind him I could see him becoming bolder. But the problem for me is that this thought sustains me less and less - my respect for the Labour Party is draining away so fast that I'm not sure I will have any left by the election.
