Labour canvasser today

I'm in one the constituencies with a by-election coming up.

Just had a labour canvasser (woman, mid/late fifties) knock to ask if I was voting. I said yes I would be.

She asked if I knew who I was voting for. I asked if she knew what a woman was. I told her I was a single issue voter and that was the only issue that was going to decide how I voted.

Her response: "I believe a woman is anyone who believes themself to be a woman".

I told her in that case I have nothing else to say to her, and closed the door.

I would have loved to have actually put some of the issues to her (rapists in prisons, assaults in mixed sex spaces, including schools, destruction of women's sports etc) but my heart was already racing and I knew it would be like talking to a brick wall anyway.

But anyway - at least that's a clear pile in the eye for the whole 'it doesn't come up on the doorstep' nonsense.

So, I'm either voting Tory or SDP.

JW is a Tory MP now. That might not bother you because they are a Tory, but as I said, all it will take is for him to turn up to work in a skirt, use the Ladies and Sunak will fall over himself to commend the stunning bravery of it all.

Would you see him as not a threat if he was Labour, Lib-Dem, Green or SNP?

And slither away to hide behind feminism.

My feminism is right out there. It is not something I hide behind.Hmm

So you aren't using it as a shield for your anti-Toryism?

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/07/2023 23:09

Nor is it something I use to shield TRAs from criticism because they wear a blue rosette.[angry [

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/07/2023 23:12

The Tories have been a disaster for women. I am a feminist so of course I am anti-Tory.

OK so I have a vote in a three way marginal constituency. Should I vote for:

The current incumbent who is a rather right-wing, getting on a bit brexiteer but also an effective constituency MP who spoke eloquently in favour of women's sex-based rights a couple of weeks ago having clearly spent time researching the subject.

The Lib-Dem candidate at the last election who told me that I was a bigot for even questioning the right for transpeople to access single sex spaces.

The Labour candidate at the last election who told me that any questions about gender were unhelpful.

I would appreciate your advice.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 18/07/2023 23:34

I don’t think it’s irrational to question why, when you look at all the bad shit that’s happened under one party, people think the other guys are worse. That’s a perfectly reasonable question. But lots and lots of answers to that have been given on this thread and people don’t seem to be listening. The fact is the current Tory leadership contingent are on the whole unsympathetic to genderism. The opposite is true of their opposite numbers. When I want to know what might happen that’s what I think about, not what the views of the may government of 5 years ago were.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 18/07/2023 23:35

Of course I’d prefer a party untainted by gender bollocks. But there isn’t one available to me.

That's a no brainer Tory vote for me but probably not for 'Boots'.

FigRollsAlly · 18/07/2023 23:39

Boots says that where they are they don’t have the same choice between parties as most of us do.

You're not wrong.Grin

In that position I'd look at other candidates, vote MRL Party or spoil my vote. Fortunately there is a year until the next GE, maybe you'll get a Communist or SDP candidate on the ballot.

I say it cos it's true.

The vile behaviour towards women that will be unleashed if Labour win the election is worrying.

So many labour supporters are convinced that women are fascists deserving a punch and once they are supporting the party in government nothing is going to hold them back from extremism.

The labour party will become unbearable for women, the unions will be acting like lunatics and labour councils with become anti single sex exceptions overnight.

I'm not exaggerating, they are all just waiting for their coming of their Messiah.

Yep.

Please don't vote tory.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/07/2023 00:25

Yep.

There are no Labour or Tory candidates in NI anyway? All parties there seem to be TWAW (including the Communist Party of Ireland) apart from the DUP and TUV??

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/07/2023 11:59

Guidance for schools delayed again. The Tories are all mouth, no trousers on this. They'll say anything and everything but wont actually do anything. They will not safeguard children and they certainly don't safeguard women.

On top of that, they've wrecked the country.

SunnyEgg · 19/07/2023 12:12

If you want Tories out fine but even the most anti and partisan must realise it’s Labour and maybe Lib Dem’s up next is so.

Then it’s carnage for women. I wonder what those posters will say then. Not much probably.

Well if the rumours of a reshuffle are true, perhaps Keegan is on her way out to be replaced by Cates/Badenoch instead? We can hope.
Sunak certainly needs to deliver on these issues soon. The freedom of speech in Universities is the only thing which hasn't hit the buffers so far and the various legal case outcomes.
