Labour canvasser today

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 15/07/2023 10:59

I'm in one the constituencies with a by-election coming up.

Just had a labour canvasser (woman, mid/late fifties) knock to ask if I was voting. I said yes I would be.

She asked if I knew who I was voting for. I asked if she knew what a woman was. I told her I was a single issue voter and that was the only issue that was going to decide how I voted.

Her response: "I believe a woman is anyone who believes themself to be a woman".

I told her in that case I have nothing else to say to her, and closed the door.

I would have loved to have actually put some of the issues to her (rapists in prisons, assaults in mixed sex spaces, including schools, destruction of women's sports etc) but my heart was already racing and I knew it would be like talking to a brick wall anyway.

But anyway - at least that's a clear pile in the eye for the whole 'it doesn't come up on the doorstep' nonsense.

So, I'm either voting Tory or SDP.

What exactly have the Tories done in the 13 years they have held power to improve the lot of women?

That's a very pertinent question @calimali.

I'm silly? Gosh I thought women were a little more supportive of other women that that. Patting me on the head and calling me silly is very patronising don't you think? Please do enlighten me. What exactly have the Tories done in the 13 years they have held power to improve the lot of women?

I can tell you that the women I work with, who come in for their food parcels because their children are going hungry, the same women who have to swallow their pride and go to clothes banks for shoes for their children, they like me are struggling to see how handing back power to the Tories is going to improve their lives.

If the Tories cared about women they would do something to support all of those women who face the realities of poverty, insecure housing and diminishing social services every day.

I have no issue with those who openly admit they vote Tory because they support the Conservative party and all that they stand for. Just be brave enough to come out and admit it. Don't hide behind the 'at least they know what a woman in' as a pretense that they are somehow more 'noble'.

I’m not sure why you think we’re not brave enough to admit it. I haven’t voted labour since 97 (and I regret I did so then). Dyed in the wool Tory here. I regard Labour’s willingness to embrace genderism as symptomatic of its long-standing intellectual deficiencies; utopian thinking and covert misogyny, chiefly.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 16/07/2023 21:00

Just because I won’t vote Labour despite voting for them at every election doesn’t mean I’ll be voting Tory

like so many women im
politically homeless. Not one of these shower of bastards deserves my vote

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/07/2023 21:04

What are your views on the Tory party pushing the TRA agenda to the point they put male sex offenders into women's prisons and have overseen/ are responsible for the trans shitshow that's happening to us today @AgathaSpencerGregson?

calimali · 16/07/2023 21:09

The situation regarding single sex spaces has all arisen under the Tory party's watch. If they wanted to do something about it, why didn't they. 'At least we know what a woman is' - slogans are free - it's their actions they should be judged on.

Remind me how they are doing on closing the pay gap between men and women?

Ourladycheesusedatum · 16/07/2023 21:10

Ofcourseshecan · 16/07/2023 20:00

I know it’s frustrating. But if you write to your Labour candidate telling them why you are spoiling the vote you would otherwise have cast for them, they can’t pretend they don’t know.

Well what do you think we've been doing for 20 years? Twiddling our thumbs , ranting at the unfairness?

I am absolutely done writing to MPs whom either ignore my missives or send me a 20 page screed about how it's like gay rights back in the day, and beeee kiiiiind

Ban on trans women in female prisons extended - Raab - BBC News

From Monday, trans women who have committed violent or sexual offences will be held in male prisons.

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/07/2023 21:16

A ban on some men going to women's prisons? Why only some and what government put them there in the first place @maltravers ?

The Tories are pissing on our heads and telling us it's raining.Hmm

It’s worth looking at the detail on various actions in specific parties - threads on FWR are good, it’s worth putting time in if you’re interested - and also Canada and NZ to see how far this can be pushed if gender ideology fully takes hold.

It’s scary and depressing how far it can go. We’re not there yet, but easily could be after the next GE.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 16/07/2023 21:18

This nonsense goes back beyond the current Tory government to the coalition

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/transgender-action-plan

I’ve no doubt that the Tories gave this to the Lib Dem’s as a sop as part of the coalition deal and paid it literally no attention beyond being assured that it would show they were no longer the ‘nasty party’. Since then they paid it no real attention beyond being reassured that it’s just a nice be kind thing to do until the last few years when they realised what an opportunity it was to hammer their opponents.

the fact that Labour allow it to be an opportunity for them hammered is not women’s fault

all keir has to say is “women need single sex spaces and TW need to be treated equitably and fairly. Sometimes the rights of women & TW will conflict and we will ensure that in those situations womens right to single sex spaces will be upheld
while ensuring TW also have the supper & services they need”

Transgender action plan

This document sets out the specific actions we will take across government to advance transgender equality.

The Tories have been in power for over 13 years. If they are so good at supporting women then why do we still have to fight so hard for women's rights? I for one am not happy with accpeting the staus quo thank you very much.

If you vote Tory you are Tory. Don't pretend that you are doing so with any reluctance because 'they know what a woman is'. I have seen the way that senior Tories have behaved - and I really don't like their interpretation of what the role of women is.

There is a really easy fix to this issue.
It's in labour's hands to say they will repeal the gra.

I will currently vote Tory, not because I'm a Tory, because they are doing something.
Labour will also do something, but that's in the wrong direction for me

calimali · 16/07/2023 21:25

How are the Tories 'doing something' though? They have had 13 years to do something and yet here we are.

If the Tories wanted to do something for women they could do more to support the 80 plus % of single parent households that are headed by a woman. Ignoring those families who are living in poverty is not helping women.

As I have said - I think twice now - much policy has been made as a result of capture of state institutions which is disgraceful. However, the legislative framework does provide some scope for push back. The Tories want to reinforce this. Labour wants to weaken it. The Tories recognise that the encroachments which have happened are wrong and have taken some action (not enough). Labour approves of those encroachments and want more.
in a contest between shit and shitter, I choose shit. It’s not great but it can always get worse and under labour, it will.

maltravers · 16/07/2023 21:27

I wouldn’t start from here, but here’s where we are. It’s all relative and the question is, who is worst? Look at how Rosie Duffield is treated compared to Cates and Badenoch and you have your answer.

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/07/2023 21:28

We are here because of the Tory government.

SunnyEgg · 16/07/2023 21:31

How can people not look forward?

Will it be better or worse on this issue under Labour?

Each time people avoid this I think yep they can see there’s no case for it being better

Depressing. I doubt what they deliver will be anywhere near worth it.

IhaveanewTVnow · 16/07/2023 21:34

I had a Green Party candidate at my door at the last local election. He was a full TWAW. Tried to tell me how oppressed TW are. He left me shaking with his attitude as a potential political representative.

calimali · 16/07/2023 21:34

I am still waiting to hear what the Tory's have done to better the lives of women in the 13 years they have been in a position to do so.

Every time the Tories cut welfare benefits and public services it does more harm to women than it does to men. Women will bear the brunt of cuts to social services because far more women are carers of the elderly, the sick and the young.

If you truely want to make the lives of women in the UK better and fairer then voting Tory is not the way to do it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/07/2023 21:36

I know that women's lot will be worse under the Tories. Including on the TRA front. Sunak will not be PM in 2 years time. Penny TWAW Mordaunt may be.

Ourladycheesusedatum · 16/07/2023 21:38

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/07/2023 21:24

It's even easier for the current PM to fix this issue given he has the power right now. Why do we need to wait for a change of government?

All keir has to say is women need single sex spaces.

Like he did here?

Wrong, this started with labour. We have told you enough times now
Remember the gra 2004? That started this.
You should actually do some research instead of giving out the same wrong soundbites on every one of these threads.

SunnyEgg · 16/07/2023 21:40

Still in some alternate version of reality, Penny Mordaunt dragged out as an argument. Madness.

Yep it’s going to be dire. Our poor dds (if posters have them) when we’re fully NZ and Canada style.

Maddy70 · 16/07/2023 21:42

I never understand people who vote on one issue only. No party fits everyone's ideals.

I wouldn't vote tory as I prefer family's to be able to afford to feed their children
