First Direct and Natwest closing bank accounts for political reasons inc being gender critical

Apprently First Direct have closed the account of the Wings over Scotland founder for his beliefs (He's Gender Critical), and Coutts, owned by Natwest, closed Nigel Farage's account.
Whatever you think of Nigel Farage he is entitled to a bank account.

This is really worrying.

I bank with First Direct. I am gender critical. Do I need to hide my beliefs to keep my bank account? Will tey stop me getting access to my money?

Are banks shutting accounts of customers with anti-woke beliefs?

Mr Farage has not named the bank who plan to shut his personal and business accounts this summer, but is understood to be Coutts, the famous 327-year-old private bank whose clients include the Royal Family.

However, the information turned out to be incomplete and inaccurate. Therefore, I would like to apologise to Mr Farage," Mr Jack continued.

I don’t understand ‘incomplete’ in this sentence. What does he mean by that?

From BBC website
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-66288464

The BBC has apologised to Nigel Farage over its inaccurate report about why his account at Coutts bank was closed.
On 4 July, the BBC reported Mr Farage no longer met the financial requirements for Coutts, citing a source familiar with the matter.
The ex-UKIP leader later obtained a Coutts report which indicated his political views were also considered.

To me this suggests that they think their report was true but incomplete. Whereas I thought the released dossier said he was OK commercially, and closure was all about his views.
Typical BBC non-apology.

Nigel Farage: BBC apologises to Farage over account closure story

The BBC says sorry to Nigel Farage over its report about the closure of his account at private bank Coutts.

Thats what I thought. Dishonest yet ambiguous.

NatWest have just issued an opaque statement that sounds like an acknowledgement that Dame Alison Rose did provide the disinformation about Farage to Simon Jack, the Business Editor of BBC News.

PronounssheRa · 25/07/2023 18:41

Natwest have full confidence in her.

But how bloody unprofessional. I can't see farage letting this go.

Hepwo · 25/07/2023 18:43

She's finally admitted it. Terrible.

EdithStourton · 25/07/2023 18:46

I am no fan of Nigel F but this whole incident is shocking.

Given the dodgy Russian oligarchs who mange to launder £££ in Britain, I think the banking sector needs to think quite hard about its priorities.

People are deluding themselves if they think the banking sector is whiter than white. Lots of oligarchs pre the UKraine invasion lived or spent time in the UK, where did they bank, do you suppose? NF has just blown the lid off this and wide open.

Crikey

this didn’t go down how she thought it would did it?

ResisterRex · 26/07/2023 07:13

Farage:

"Dame Alison Rose has gone. Others must follow.

I hope that this serves as a warning to the banking industry.

We need both cultural and legal changes to a system that has unfairly shut down many thousands of innocent people.

I will do my best to be their voice."

In the end, it looks like they tried to cancel him but gave him a renewed purpose and rallying call.

LoobiJee · 26/07/2023 07:14

She “resigned” after an emergency meeting of the board. And it’s because she talked to the BBC.

And now Farage is about to get air time on the BBC 🙄

Streisand effect?

I bet this has sent a cold shiver through a few bank directors. And so it should.

TodayInahurry · 26/07/2023 08:16

Before all this I had not realised how much the Stonewall evil had spread. You could get your account shut if you stated your dislike their rainbow flags. Hopefully this will eventually get rid of the Stonewall influence everwhere

Nigel Farage, banking activist - what a time to be alive Grin

PronounssheRa · 26/07/2023 08:17

It's ironic, coutts and by extension natwest compiled a report, then 'exited' Farage to protect their reputation.

Instead their reputation is in tatters, the CEO resigned, a light has been shone of the behaviour of banks, and yes its given Farage a new purpose and all the publicity that goes with it

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 26/07/2023 08:18

Be careful of what you wish for @PronounssheRa 😉

Rose thought she could get a bit of revenge on him for holding political views she disagrees with (which was totally the right thing to do because she’s a goodie and therefore incapable of making a mistake)

then she lied about that to the BBC (who lapped it up)

and now her career is ruined

is hubris the word I’m looking for?

Has anyone else seen this? RBS closes gender equality campaigner’s bank account - its here but I can't remember how to find archived version https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/natwest-closes-gender-equality-campaigner-s-account-83srm0d7x

(or was this the same person whose case was discussed here a few weeks ago?)

May well be the same case. I think the Mail covered it too? Share token:
