Cos here it is.

Janelle Monaé's sensuous new album fights back at anti-LGBTQ laws www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-65844245

Best I can work out from the drivel, she's a woman who enjoys sex and who may be bisexual.

Yeah I saw that and gave up.
Remembering those heady teenage days when I knew I was a tomboy and not a girlie girl and…that’s it.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 09/06/2023 10:24

I used to love Janelle Monae, but this is all getting a bit navel gazing for me.
To think that she was accused of being a T**F when she released Pynk.

RoseslnTheHospital · 09/06/2023 10:25

She's not even a "tom boy" or particularly androgynous in her presentation. She is a typical female popstar presenting in a stereotypical hyper-feminine way. The identifying as "non-binary" really is the "I'm not like those other girls" claiming of special status for the 21st century. "Non-binary" is utterly devoid of meaning, relevance or importance.

bellinisurge · 09/06/2023 10:27

The forced teaming with LGB is so grotesque. Those laws are , if anything, challenging TQ+ not LGB.

@BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop , that explains a lot

This. But obviously the first female artist to write sexy songs that might make some people blush. Yup, definitely no one's ever done that

MrsJamin · 09/06/2023 11:34

I loved Janelle Monae's tightrope and other songs and she's a great actor too but this is just nonsense from her - why is she not saying "I'm a woman and female and just like this because that's my personality to be who I am". These women let down all of us who don't conform to restrictive stereotypes as they reinforce those boundaries of what you can wear, what you can do etc and still be bloody female.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 09/06/2023 11:45

Yup

love her music, find her personally tedious. It’s a bit of a shame but there you are

she can live in the same box as Phoebe Bridgers who also makes amazing music and has stupid views about gender

MorrisZapp · 09/06/2023 11:50

So, upbeat, celebratory tunes sung by a semi nude straight woman?

How very... forward thinking 😂

bellinisurge · 09/06/2023 12:10

@BernardBlacksMolluscs not Phoebe Bridgers. Like her stuff. Why don't these dopes see what's coming? Or take the chance to focus on LGB. Lesbians, Gay men and bisexual people are going to get caught in the inevitable backlash that will come from the lawsuits arising from child surgical mutilation.

Look at what happened to Macy Gray when she did. It was like a hostage video the apology.

WickedSerious · 09/06/2023 13:25

Never heard of her.

LonginesPrime · 09/06/2023 14:18

She says that being out as non-binary makes her music better.

I can imagine it makes the reception of her music better and people are probably fawning around her and praising her more now that she's out as non-binary, but it's interesting that she says, presumably in earnest, that she believes the music is objectively better as a result.

AmuseBish · 09/06/2023 14:41

I seem to recall she wore a suit for a bit? And suits are for men? Hence PROVING YOU COMPLETELY WRONG GrinWink

ValerieDoonican · 09/06/2023 14:46

Does "queer" mean "disappointed by being relatively overlooked"?

DuesToTheDirt · 09/06/2023 23:33

OK, so despite following the general debate on the alphabet soup, I still have no idea what non-binary is. Or queer, for that matter. I too read the article and thought, eh? what?

Hepwo · 09/06/2023 23:45

But "understanding that I'm now non-binary freed me up," she continued.

She was stiff and boring in the Glass Onion, which was a silly film. So not freed up there.

People seem so dull these days despite all the infinite possibilities.

Social media sucks the life out every thing with it's ubiquity.

Yip, I have Diane Keaton on the phone and she wants a word 😍

Non binary is a load of bullshit for attention seekers and people who want to be considered special.

Here is an interview with James Shupe - the first person in the US to be legally counted as non-binary, and even he now says it is bullshit.
He also admits that he is actually an autogynephillic male (and furthermore that it is driven by a sexual component).

bellinisurge · 10/06/2023 12:39

Non-binary appears to mean sometimes you don't wear makeup (or to if you are a bloke) and you sometimes quite fancy someone who is the same sex as you.
Wow. Revelation.
Aka bullshit attempt to make a totally mundane thing be special

Or for people who think they’re progressive but are actually so conservative they can’t conceive of women doing ‘man things’ so need a special not-a-woman identity. That’s not a dig at Janelle, but a general comment about Americans in particular, many of whom are still in thrall to regressive ideas about gender.

I used to like JM, but this pansexual non-binary crap makes her sound so cringeworthy.

James/Lisa can’t make up their mind. They seem quite troubled.

*For the record, I have formally renounced my previous ties and allegiance to radical and gender-critical feminists, conservatives, and faith-based groups." Shortly after in 2022, she received a legal name change to "Elisa Rae Shupe". In March 2023, Shupe leaked over 2600 pages of emails, spanning a period from 2017 to 2023, between her and a group of what Mother Jones calls "representatives of a network of activists and organizations at the forefront of the anti-trans movement".
