Kathleen Stock at Oxford Union?

Is it up on You Tube yet? I cannot see it and usually the Union posts up the talk immediately after??

Dying to see it. Love the Doc and am so glad she got to have her time at the Union despite Ris & Co trying to have it shut down.

Hoping someone in the know will post a link soon. Really keen to watch this but can't find it via googling

Lilifer · 04/06/2023 12:11

Yeah it's weird, usually these discussions are put up straight away, I do hope that You Tube is not at its censorious work!

I was wondering the same. They are normally up v quickly.

SelfPortraitWithHagstone · 05/06/2023 15:44

Damn it, I would happily have watched all of it, including the Blue Peter episode... 😀

Lottapianos · 05/06/2023 16:26

Thanks for sharing that Icake. I could listen to her all day. She is so clear, thoughtful, precise, compassionate and engaging

My favourite moment was when she challenged her interviewer on what he meant by 'gender', and he got in such a mess trying to explain it that the audience burst out laughing! Speaks volumes about what a nonsense it is

RudsyFarmer · 05/06/2023 16:28

Place marking to watch later 👌

Helleofabore · 05/06/2023 17:41

That was very civil. And it was more respectful than the Cambridge event and Kass’s input.

Datun · 05/06/2023 17:59

I've just watched it. And although I am probably one of the women who believe Kathleen Stock is too moderate, I thought it was superb.

A lot of these students quite clearly have no idea about safeguarding, or the implications of ignoring it. Or the statistical likelihood of a male, however he identifies, of being a sex offender.

They also have no idea how to explain what gender is, or what trans is.

There was an hilarious bit, which seemed to stretch on interminably, where the convener, Matthew, babbled incoherently. Which, given he's clearly articulate, was very revealing. And, I have to say, highly rewarding 😄

Kathleen's stance seemed to be, it's not that I disagree with transgenderism, is that I disagree with self ID and the legal implications. Because of all these ways you can exploit it.

And that reality is important, of course.

Which, in my opinion, is almost impossible to argue against, unless you are a complete fanatic.

It will definitely sway a lot of people. And outraged transactivists will do the rest.

These students have seen, with their own eyes, that Kathleen stock is not some awful, bigoted hater.

They are going to start wondering why they thought that in the first place.

Helleofabore · 05/06/2023 18:14

Rather datun! I too doubt they will watch. They didn’t read the book. And I was surprised not one person could articulate a question that showed her to not have a reasonable position.

I consider the student who tried to take exception to her calling some people ‘babies’ was really just tone policing and not showing her to be unreasonable. In fact, Doc Stock pointed out she did not want to be a ‘spokesperson’ to be ‘looked up to’.

WarriorN · 05/06/2023 18:16

I'm a quarter through and oh my gosh she's got the arguments NAILED! X

Tah dah!

Apparently it was being edited to remove our sticky fingered friend.

Yay!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

It occurred to me what a very privileged world they exist in.

If you live in some communities in the U.K, girls learn from a very early age what it means to be female.

If you work in some professions you understand the risks very clearly indeed.

They're supposed to be educated but are the most uneducated in this debate.

WarriorN · 05/06/2023 18:24

And that's not to say that sexual assault doesn't happen in privileged institutions; private schools are more likely to be single sex so peer on peer male to female sexual abuse is less likely to occur.

It was recorded on everyone's invited however.

AlisonDonut · 05/06/2023 18:26

I cannot see that on my actual you tube, it is unlisted.

IcakethereforeIam · 05/06/2023 19:24

I think I disagree with her on one of the early points, if tw 'magically' became harmless to women, they'd be okay in single sex spaces. Because objections rest on at least two planks, safety and dignity. I'm being nitpicky though because safety has been, is being and will always be compromised by allowing access to men who claim to be trans.

@AlisonDonut my YouTube threw this in my face. I didn't even have to look for it. Do you think it's being mass reported on by the usuals?

Premiumbondbaby · 05/06/2023 19:47

Thank you for the link. KS is so good at articulating a sensible response of her position, it leaves questioners little room to disagree.

FriendofJoanne · 05/06/2023 19:47

I’m half way through and I’ve had to pause watching as the inane questions are riling me. The one asking her to describe a woman with no reference to biological functions ffs. That’s the whole point - sex is biological. Then followed by him waffling on about all the other genders in other cultures.

Seems to think himself so clever but they have no idea about reality. It’s making my blood boil.

Perhaps he could define a man for us with no recourse to biology. What makes him a man or not?! Grrrrrr. Sorry for the rant I need to have an outlet somewhere so here it is!

FriendofJoanne · 05/06/2023 19:49

Oh and he keeps talking over her, not listening. Seems to love the sound of his own voice

maltravers · 05/06/2023 20:06

I thought she was really good - well done Kathleen for speaking so well and keeping your cool.

Her response to this anon question - (paraphrasing) I don't blame the questioner, I feel sorry for them as they're clearly "up to their neck in Judith Butler."

😂😆🤣

WarriorN · 05/06/2023 20:24

Gawd is there someone else coming on other than this kid?

I dread to think what he's going to do as an adult. Law?! 😖 politics... argh

WarriorN · 05/06/2023 20:25

Oh god and then he brings up "indigenous ideas of gender" 😖

It’s embarrassing. Placemarking for later, thank you for the share.

maltravers · 05/06/2023 20:45

Otoh he and the rest of the committee had the cojones to invite KS, push back against the Tra histrionics, ask a professional philosopher questions knowing she could make mincemeat of him if she wanted and also knowing any false step he made would have meant he would become public enemy no1 to the loons outside. Oh and the media’s watching too. Yes he sounds a bit pompous but he must be only in his early 20s. I think he did pretty well really.
