Thread 1:
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4776556-a-mumsnet-thread-about-a-book-about-a-mumsnet-thread-under-the-duvet-of-darkness-written-by-the-women-of-mumsnet?utm_campaign=thread&utm_medium=share

You do not need to have read thread 1 – this is not that sort of thread.

But to recap… Over Christmas and New Year after the passing of the GRR (Scotland) Bill a thread was started with a poem about Nicola Sturgeon. Eventually on that thread (and a couple of other threads) over 80 poems were written.

“Under the Duvet of Darkness: Poems written by angry women for angry women because WOMEN WON’T WHEESHT” was published as a paperback on 31st March 2023.

Available on Amazon only: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0C129WKDD

In a rather bizarre turn of events at one point it reached No 2 in poetry best sellers and No 5 in Feminist Criticism best sellers. No one will be surprised to discover that a book that is in the main about people, especially men, claiming to be something they are not was kept off the No1 spot in poetry best sellers by a crime novel, identifying as poetry, written by a man ;-)

E-BOOK:

Some people wanted an e-book rather than a paperback, but for that we needed someone who could actually make an e-book and some extra poems.

FairyKindleMother came to the rescue with regards the e-book and posters wrote enough poems that we could add 20 more poems into the e-book.

I pressed publish on the e-book a few hours ago. It can take usually up to 3 days to appear and populate all the info etc on the various sites, and there is always the chance they knock it back for some reason. But I've done all I can do at this point. We just have to wait and see who spots it on sale first! It will appear on the Amazon link above hopefully soon, (or I'll get an email asking me to change something).

MONEY FROM SALES OF ALL FORMATS:

In honour of Magdalen Berns, who co-founded the Scottish campaign group For Women Scotland, 100% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to For Women Scotland.

“It’s not hate to defend your rights, and it’s not hate to speak the truth.”
Magdalen Berns (1983 – 2019)

As I started work on the e-book posters continued to write poems. So we had a choice: leave them there, languishing on the thread, unloved, forgotten, never to have their words uttered again OR we could just do volume 2.

Posters voted for Volume 2 but we still need more poems!

And that’s the gist of thread 1.

It's definitely a different experience reading it as an e-book!!

Brilliant! I've obviously had to buy this too!

Also temporarily changed my user name in your honour.

Boiledbeetle · 05/06/2023 10:11

@RealFeminist apologies..

Whispers "Pssst...the e-book is available"

@FuckMeSidewaysAndCallMeBarbara well of course you have to buy it again! There's extra stuff! And as for the name change 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍. Now you just have to write a poem under that name!

I picked up the ebook this morning.

Seems strange to see something from this forum out in the wild like that.

LumpfishNoodle · 05/06/2023 13:56

Well, it's arrived. I now have the Kindle version as well as the paper copy. Although it's impossible to leave the Kindle version pretentiously out on the coffee table for a number of reasons (the cats don't care, the Kindle turns the screen off on its own and I don't have a coffee table due to my propensity for shin bashing) it is great to be able to flick back and forth, search, zoom in (anyone else tried pinching two fingers together on an actual book lately? No? Just me, then) and whatnot. The addition of lovely bonus poems is a nice touch. So if you haven't bought it yet, trot on over to the Kindle section... and then think about getting a hard copy as well - it is for Charity, after all 😀

Your poems are in there! 😘

Also

I've just discovered the scroll option on the kindle app!! I feel I have finally joined the 21st century! No page turning for me, just free scrolling from start to finish.

@FairyKindleMother did a really good job on it i I think! The file I gave her was not pretty!

Thank you for doubling up on your book purchase!

I too have been pinching to enlarge paperbacks recently!

Could you maybe print of a copy of the book cover, and doing your best blue peter presenter impersonation along with a cereal box and some double sided sticky tape make an UTDOD kindle cover????

You are too kind for I am shite. 😉

I’m working on a pocket poem for thread 2. I know what I want to say but I need flowing juices…

ArcaneWireless · 05/06/2023 15:23

The cycle of life

When clubby books were all the rage
And you folded your frock’s page
I bet you thought that that was where it ends

But besides your brand new telly
Or a fancy patterned welly
There was a limit to your wanton spends.

Three decades on I think you’ll find
For those more broad of mind
A catalogue just won’t give you a shock

You can buy a brace of titty
And can purchase something slitty
To be fashioned from your inside outy cock.

Some things just do not change
All that’s grown is just the range
And if you’ve money you can have it all

You can take up female sport
And the sponsorship you’ll court
Will let you have the pro-ver-bi-al ball.

The shitey thing about this course
Is the lack of all remorse
From them that rob a woman of her medal

But sunshine is now shiny
And for them that are now whiny
We’re enjoying the most glorious back-pedal. 🚲

Boiledbeetle · 05/06/2023 17:06

@ArcaneWireless a triumph! Ahh an absolute triumph. Top of the podium for you.

glorious!

Ooh hang on a minute get down we've got a late entry from Lola:

I'm an not a man
A woman I am.

Ooh marvellous! Fantastic. Sorry Arcane second place for you.

Oi! Give me that medal back so I can give it to him!!!!

ArcaneWireless · 05/06/2023 17:07

Larpingasapoet · 05/06/2023 22:54

???

When will the madness end,
will it ever end at all.
Will things always be this broken,
or will sanity once more prevail.

Will us women always be lesser,
stomped on by wants of man.
Will our lives forever be holden
to the oppressed and vulnerable men.

Will women get their words back,
how about our spaces too.
Will we ever see the sunlight,
or are we forever doomed to clouds.

Will laws continue to shrink our world,
back to a darker age,
when women were but nothing,
a mere footnote on a page.

When will the world once more
see the damage that they’ve done
to entire generations of
girls and future women.

@SinnerBoy after your very long wait for an e-book is actually a thing!! 😁😁😁

I have spent way too much time getting my tablet to read out the sweary ones. And it sounds so weird having someone speak everyone's usernames! You suddenly realise how nuts they must sound to someone not on mumsnet!but

I'm tempted to write An Oxfam poem today, after their appalling price month video but I fear it may just be the line Fuck off on repeat! Maybe I could translate each fuck off into a different language from around the world!

Thank you, so I see. I will get onto it later... Been busy dismantling my daughter's camp bed, for a courier, who is now 1 hour 37 minutes late. I've pulled a pectoral muscle and am not feeling very impressed.

SinnerBoy · 06/06/2023 12:25

Bah! The Kindle is registered and I've found the book, but despite repeated attempts, it's telling me there's connectivity problem. The phone works OK on wifi and I can navigate through the website.

It's a bloody conspiracy, I tells you!
