Canadian academic withdraws her book (on 18th century humour) from publication because the publisher also publishes books from GC author. That is quite some hyperbole Eugenia Zuroski is spouting.

Academic pulls book from Oxford University Press in transphobia row

An academic has withdrawn her forthcoming book from Oxford University Press and accused the publisher of helping to launder “genocidal fascism” against trans p

So the current buzzwords include ‘laundering transphobia’ now?

Still, a good plug for Holly’s book.

Chrysanthemum5 · 13/05/2023 07:35

The comments on the article are spot on - the continued use of the term 'genocide ' in this context is incredibly offensive

I suspect she will find another publisher for her worthy tome (that very few will read)

AspiringChatBot · 13/05/2023 07:53

Well, here's a whole muppet I've never heard of before (Eugenia Zeroski) whose books I don't want or need to read now that I know that Zeroski lacks any and all critical thinking skills and seems to be a misogynist.

Zuroski claimed the OUP was publishing “hateful rhetoric while waves of anti-trans legislation are being drafted and passed in both the US and the UK, making life increasingly unlivable for trans people day by day”. ONE EXAMPLE from the UK, Zoroski, please. ONE.

The UK, it added, “is known globally as an epicentre of anti-transgender policy and rhetoric”. Neither Australia nor Canada is in the UK, even though the three countries share a Head of State. Get out of the basement, incels, and look at a map.

"Laundering transphobia" stood out to me as well.

This take on gnashing and wailing is amusing though: "transperbole"

You’d be disappointed in a first year undergraduate who can only throw around ‘genocide’ and ‘fascism’ with literally no
evidence to substantiate them. Academic standards have clearly plummeted if the academics are doing this.

Trying to cancel whole publishing houses (not just individual authors) is beyond ridiculous. The arrogance of the woman is astounding.

Transperbole is a great term.

Woman2023 · 13/05/2023 08:17

I assume Zuroski is going to self publish as surely no publisher will be pure enough. Or is she only bothered by terfy opinions?

Who could find a publisher that had no books that offended them?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 13/05/2023 08:30

I think this person may have just found a new ( self promoting) cause. She was previously trying hard on the ‘pioneer of anti racism’ ladder , but that’s a bit old hat, and crowded. So she’s going for anti transphobia.

Interestingly, her most successful attempt at self publicity was buying a book on Amazon which she had previously owned ( I mean the actual copy, not just a replacement). That did pretty well, it even made the Daily Mail, although obvious it didn’t gain so many social justice points.

I wonder if there is a new dynamic? ‘Publish or Perish’ used to be the mantra, especially in North America . Has it been replaced with ‘Protest or Perish’ ?

ArabeIIaScott · 13/05/2023 08:30

Well, good news about Holly L-S' second book. Sounds good.

ArabeIIaScott · 13/05/2023 08:32

Cripes, it's definitely an academic book, though!

18th century humour

So, how funny do we reckon her book might be?

ArabeIIaScott · 13/05/2023 08:46

Probably more improving humour.

Genesis1v27 · 13/05/2023 09:57

Zuroski cites a statement by the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention. This has to be read to be believed. A sample sentence: "The gender critical movement is a totalitarian and genocidal social force that targets not just transgender people, but also all the institutions of democracy that protect individual and collective human rights."

How is she 'inviting hellfire' in her mentions when she's turned off comments?

These people are demanding a fight in an empty room.

She really seems to be having a fight with vapours in that thread. 😂

And apparently hasn’t read the book she is commenting on. The comments about ‘I suppose this is ‘your’ friend’ or whatever looks mad!

ResisterRex · 13/05/2023 10:43

"The year of our fascism"

Nice to get clarification on who owns that.

I particularly liked 'I am painfully aware that screaming on Twitter is not effective activism or even solidarity. I'm being cowardly here: not @-ing the publisher or AUPresses. At the absolute least I want the fair number of UP-ers who follow me to know about this & have to think about what it means.'

So she wants to have a wee public rant and for her pals to agree with her, basically.

That'll show the fascist genociders!

nauticant · 13/05/2023 10:51

If only those fighting in the Warsaw Ghetto had been told of such tactics it could all have ended so differently.

ArabeIIaScott · 13/05/2023 10:52

I prefer antifa's new tactics of raging quietly amongst themselves, tbh.

ArabeIIaScott · 13/05/2023 10:53

And withholding their books about 18th century hahas from the breathless unwashed masses. I mean, that's cruel.

nauticant · 13/05/2023 10:55

There can be no holding back on the path to smashing the genocidal fascists.

IcakethereforeIam · 13/05/2023 11:02

Oh fuck, S.Lavary's back on twitter....with a new book!

Yup, the £60 price tag alone tells you that. (The price gouging in academic publishing is shocking - years ago, I proofread an academic book years that went on sale at £110 for the Kindle edition!)

Oops, what an advert for my proofreading that post was - delete the second "years"!
