I was shocked but delighted to see this on the HebWeb, Hebden Bridge's community website.
https://www.hebdenbridge.co.uk/forum/2023/006.html
Sadly the letter by Dave Boardman (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11130491/Music-academy-lecturer-sacked-comments-drag-queens-femininity-takes-legal-action.html Cathy's dad) has been removed due to legal threats but the comments are still up

Lecturer 'sacked for suggesting drag acts are a gross caricature'

Cathy Boardman, a former lecturer in cultural studies at a Brighton music college, claims she has been forced out of her job after she asked her class to reflect on whether 'womanface' is demeaning.

I read the Mr Boardman letter from April on the link. I am sorry his daughter has had those issues with being "cancelled". The rush to contact police to say someone is harrassing someone just because he sent a few polite emails to his representative on the council is unfortunate. He has worked for the Labour party for years. He should now come over to the Tory fold - we are much more tolerant than the left and are happy people have all kinds of different views.

and it's all kicking off on the HB again

Not so happy valley indeed

It's not a popular piece of artwork is it.

2bazookas · 26/07/2023 12:52

@cakethereforeIam ·
I hadn't realised Hebden Bridge was in Calder Valley.

Gawd, then you never really cottoned on to the socio-sesexual politics in Happy Valley?

AHugeTinyMistake · 26/07/2023 12:52

We could have a party for only people who like psy trance music. I wouldn't want to go, but I would never try to ban it

Love your sense of humour @CathyBoardman but I must disagree - psytrance is an abomination

Best of luck with the hearing next year, keep us updated.

It is an abomination! That's why I wouldn't want to go. But happy for them to crack on without me.

@2bazookas I noticed Calder Valley being quite terfy in the petition maps. I had my suspicions but never checked. That'll learn me.

As an academic working in a field where the distinction between sex and gender is important, stories like this terrify me. How can someone be fired for upholding basic academic standards? I'm sorry this has happened to you @CathyBoardman.

Apologies for lowering the tone here, but as a local who has seen the offending artwork in the flesh, my immediate thought was that the ‘artist’ must have taken their inspiration from the illustrations of those hallowed works of great literature, the Rainbow Magic series of books; they’re beloved by little girls of five, there are about 27 billion titles in the exploitative and commercially-driven series and there is but one variation on a plot that is executed extremely badly by a committee of ‘writers’, probably because, as an author, you would commit Hara-Kiri if you were forced to pen more than one to avoid living on value tins of beans for your whole life. I won’t bore you with the very boring ‘plot/s’ but here are some images of the goblins that feature in every single one of the interminable but thankfully very slim volumes.

You have just reminded of the nightmare stage of my life when one DD was one Warrior Cats and the other on those bloody things. DH and I used to think of alternative titles. Abigail the Absinthe Fairy, because after you'd read one, that was what you'd need.

Reading bedtime stories was pure torture for a good six months.

VoodooQualities · 26/07/2023 21:15

I grew up in Bradford in the 80s and 90s and used to buy all my teenage drugs from Hebden Bridge. Hash and pills. I played pool in the Stubbin Wharf, and I drank lager, smoked weed and met my husband in The Hole in the Wall.

That is all.

I loved that one as much as Dina the Diazepam Fairy and Velda the Valium Fairy.

Why is the cross-dressing vampire out in daylight?

(If only I had a jokey punch line for this question!)

Ofcourseshecan · 27/07/2023 08:35

CathyBoardman · 25/04/2023 20:16

Yes it's very silly. And pushes things underground, and fosters resentment.

There's no reason that feminists and trans people can't get on. We don't all have to believe the same things in order treat each other well.

There's also no reason that we can't have women only events, or trans only events, or gay men only events.

We could have a party for only people who like psy trance music. I wouldn't want to go, but I would never try to ban it. I also wouldn't assume that a party aimed at a demographic that I don't belong to is planned as a personal slight to me.

Women's discos have been a staple of the valley for years. The long running one isn't women only anymore, and now we are only allowed to gather with other women if we do it privately and in secret.

That's progress for you.

This is terrifying and it’s true. This where we are right now. Men’s sex fetishes are more important than women’s rights.

In an odd piece of coincidence the woman who wrote those rainbow magic books got cancelled and sacked due to her gc views and now drives an hgv. I’ve no idea what the universe is telling us here.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-11259447/amp/Former-childrens-author-opens-cancelled-standing-JK-Rowling.html

She also wrote the Warrior Cats series. Her husband had just died when she was cancelled. It was awful.

EdithStourton · 27/07/2023 09:53

Same person to blame for BOTH series? You're shitting me!

No bloody way should she have been cancelled, though. Much as the books drove me bonkers, she helped to get a dyslexic DC reading for pleasure.
