Permanently banned from ReddIt for 'inciting violence and promoting hate'

Would you like to guess what it was I said that was terrible enough to warrant a permanent ban (after nine years on the site)?

I remind you that this is the same site that hosts a very large number of subforums promoting rpe, child abse, voyeurism, violence against women, and so on.

Something to do with TW not being W?

rumbusiness · 18/04/2023 13:50

Hello, by the way, to anyone who knows me from there and is also on here. It was nice knowing you.

Women don't have Willie's?

It wasn't even as extreme as that. But yes, pretty much.

I'm happy to post a link to the thread in question here but not sure if it's allowed or not. It was in the uknews sub yesterday, regarding single-sex facilities.

People aren't clownfish?

RufustheSpecuIatingreindeer · 18/04/2023 13:52

Wow 😳

Women don't have Willie's?

Essentially for saying that I didn't want to get changed in a changing room in front of any males, regardless of how they identify, and also that I didn't want to be non-consensually exposed to naked males in the changing room either.

Even the poster I was discussing with (a gay man), who disagreed with me, thanked me openly for a civil and respectful discussion.

However, for having had the temerity to express a desire, as a woman, for some privacy and not wanting to strip off in front of men, I have been kicked off the site permanently.

Misogynist subreddIts have been directly responsible for the rape, molestation, murder, and abuse of women and girls in real life
as it says on r/banfemalehatesubs

But god forbid a woman should express, politely, the view that we might not want to expose ourselves and our daughters in front of strange men. What a hateful bigot I am.

OP posts:
Needanewnamebeingwatched · 18/04/2023 13:59

Well of course you should want to undress in front of these "women" what a hateful bigot you are.

If fact you should give your body, children and anything else over to them, you are not worthy of independent thought.

LarkLane · 18/04/2023 14:11

Absolutely ridiculous, I'm so sorry that you were treated this way.

rumbusiness · 18/04/2023 14:17

Thank you, I appreciate that. I had built up a pretty good curated feed for myself there, with loads of saved posts, interesting links, enjoyable communities, etc. But I stepped out of my lane and dared to express an opinion as a woman. So obviously I must be silenced.

I should have known better. They destroyed all of the gender critical subs quite openly. But this wasn't even an argument - it was a civil, polite, mutually respectful discussion. They just really can't bear women having any thoughts or opinions or being allowed to speak.

The pure hatred of women on there is really frightening.

That’s so crappy. I had the misfortune of reading a Reddit thread, if they’re called that! I don’t have an account, but the Meghan Markle threads are batshit, include fake documents and some deeply misogynistic hateful things. I thought it was anything goes there.

ArcaneWireless · 18/04/2023 14:37

Inciting violence and promoting hate my arse. The truth that once only hurt now causes men’s hurty feelies.

That is the problem.

I wonder if this is the modern day equivalent of a scold’s bridle.

Silence is everything.

Common sense and common decency is not for the likes of us to express.

I don’t know why they don’t just obliterate women and girls SoylentGreen style and issue each male with their own silent rubber be-holed doll.

ArabeIIaScott · 18/04/2023 14:41

I'm sorry to hear that, OP.

I had understood Reddit was not a woman-friendly site at all.

WarriorN · 18/04/2023 14:43

Wasn't challenor something to do with Reddit?

I'm sorry you were treated like that.

Men don't like women saying no.

rumbusiness · 18/04/2023 14:48

ArabeIIaScott · 18/04/2023 14:41

I'm sorry to hear that, OP.

I had understood Reddit was not a woman-friendly site at all.

You're right, it really isn't.

But it's a very big and diverse site (I used to really enjoy e.g. the aviation, photography, 'catastrophic failure', London, science and history forums, and also got lots of support for eating disorder recovery from various communities there) and you sort of fall into a false sense of security, forgetting that it is such a totalitarian, Thought Police regime underneath it all, and run by people (men) who really, really, really hate women.

It's got worse - there were a few openly gender critical forums on there a few years ago, but they were all banned. They even tried to shut down the 'Periods' forum (for being transphobic - just discussing menstruation is transphobic apparently).

I was already temporarily banned once before for commenting on a story about Drag Queen Story Hour in children's libraries. So that's twice i've posted on a story relating to trans issues, and twice i've been banned - this time permanently.

Reddit is bloody weird. From the limited range of threads I've looked at, some of the mods are deeply motivated by particular ideologies, none of which has much time for free speech and open debate.

Bad luck, OP. I'm sorry, that is crap.

I don't know whether I've just become more alert over the past few years, or if the situation for women has got worse, but it is just a shit-show. I read a book review this morning where the murder of a woman by her boyfriend - a fairly key event in the (factual) story the book was telling - was just a few words in brackets. I thought, bet a bloody man wrote this. Scrolled up, and lo.

It's only 'anything goes' if it's completely in line with the dominant ideology of the site. So posting pictures of your mother, sister, or girlfriend, without her knowledge, sharing violent fantasies of sexual assault, and inviting other men to do the same, is fine. Actual images of child ab*se are fine.

Expressing the view that you'd rather not take your clothes off, or have your daughter take her clothes off, in front of strange men gets you kicked off the site.

i ventured in there but didn't dare post

one of the ones I read was what has changed since becomming a trans woman

the predominant ones seemed to be

carry shopping bags as they are just too darn heavy
walk past a building site without being hit on (colour me skeptical)
walk around after dark as men turn into predators

MoltenLasagne · 18/04/2023 14:56

I left a few years back when they shut down all the gender critical subs as "hate forums".

I've since learned that there are major concerns about many of the main moderators which is not that surprising.

BigTedLittleTedCardboardBox · 18/04/2023 14:57

Shocking but sadly not surprising. I also do not want to undress next to strange men. My daughter does not want to undress next to strange men. What radicalised bigots we must all be.

OneMorePlant · 18/04/2023 15:12

You can appeal the ban. The arguments you can make have to fit into a small paragraph so stick to your personal experience as a woman and that you live in a county that has sex discrimination laws and that you are legally allowed to talk about women's issues:

Thank you. I already sent the appeal very quickly from my phone. I just said something basic but true like - I wasn't inciting hate or violence, and the poster I was discussing with actually thanked me for the civil and respectful discussion. I don't think they give a shit tbh. But thanks for the advice.

Awful but sadly not surprising. Reddit is a hotbed of misogyny.

It speaks volumes that the GC board was shut down (even though it was pretty respectful compared to the rest of the site), but threads that talk about rape fantasies etc. are allowed.

Reddit is the place where incels are spawned.

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 18/04/2023 16:09

Ooh I got a perma-ban from CasualUK for saying similar. Brilliant.
