Permanently banned from ReddIt for 'inciting violence and promoting hate'

rumbusiness · 18/04/2023 13:48

Would you like to guess what it was I said that was terrible enough to warrant a permanent ban (after nine years on the site)?

I remind you that this is the same site that hosts a very large number of subforums promoting rpe, child abse, voyeurism, violence against women, and so on.

Ugh same, I used Reddit simply for a particular topic which I'm fascinated by and there isn't really anywhere else that has the same format and audience. Gradually the mod team changed/were replaced by power tripping TRA bullies. I don't know if they're power mods or what but they make everything about trans 🥱
Including auto-reminders in giant font 😂

The scolding language would be hilarious if it wasn't so disturbing. Everything is peppered in trigger warning flairs lest the trans be triggered by generic subject matter. If someone forgets to include a trigger warning they receive a massive infantilising lecture.

I was pissed off at first but now I'm glad I'm out of it. They've destroyed what was once an interesting subforum! Too many of the original members have been banned and it's now full of sycophants, pathetic in-jokes, repetition and misinformation. Afaik the members are predominantly women so the sycophancy is even more depressing. The topic has some obvious feminist angles, I'm baffled how these folks claim to champion women's rights while simultaneously throwing women under the bus and screeching TERF at the top of their lungs.

It's a shame there isn't an authority above the out-of-control Reddit mods to rein them in. It'd be great if new, gender-critical ownership happened 😁

EmotionalSupportHyena · 19/04/2023 07:34

I know this is likely small comfort but OP, I suspect your banning is the lashing out of a dying modmonster, because I’ve just begun to notice signs of a Free Speech outbreak starting on Reddit.

Eg this thread from yesterday (archive link but it’s still live on r/trueoffmychest): https://archive.is/AngtT

4000 upvotes and loads of sensible, upvoted comments.

OldGardinia · 19/04/2023 07:48

I got told "Eat shit and die, Terf" for saying JK Rowling was a nice person who had helped a lot of people. But happily, their posts got deleted and a few people upvoted me. So it depends a little where you go on there.

@WarriorN
>Wasn't challenor something to do with Reddit?

Yes. He was made a mod on a number of forums including r/ukpolitics where he banned someone for posting an article from The Spectator. People found out who he was and raised a stink.

>you can’t actually change sex

You can liven it up a bit though.

Abhannmor · 19/04/2023 08:03

What a shower of bastids, @rumbusiness !

I left Reddit when they deleted the GC sub Reddit. Challenor was working for them then I think.
In retrospect I think Reddit is even worse than Twitter circa 2017. Just a sewer of hatred and misogyny.
There is a gc forum on saidit.com . Or was at any rate. But if course there's less traffic on saidit.

I’m banned from r/labouruk for saying that the LBG alliance isn’t anti-trans , just supporting LGB. I got called a bigot on the thread and banned for hate

That’s a manifestation the Labour Party’s totalitarian attitude and lack of critical thought where trans ideology is concerned.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 19/04/2023 10:39

Maybe some folks on the trans-activist side will come out to condemn censorship and support open discussion. I'm joking of course.

When your 'merchandise' is on such very shaky ground, you know full-well that the very last thing you can afford to do is to open it up to discussion or public examination.

As any tiny child would tell you (if they could), when you know that objective facts and reason will instantly make your cause fall like a Slinky off a cliff, it's so much easier to just lash out, burst into tears and shout "You hate me!" at your mummy.

Always remember that, when we're told how many people are purportedly fully supportive of their cause, you need to bear in mind the considerable personal cost of not being (or pretending to be, or daring to speak out) in favour of everything that they demand. Kim Jong-Un gets 100% of the vote in every election, so that clearly 'proves' that the NK people all support him wholeheartedly....

Debbehthchosenmum · 19/04/2023 11:29

Ah man you could be me. I too was on it, pretty much daily for about 10 years and now permanently banned. Even when I use a different email address, different everything it somehow 'knows' and bans me within a day.

My crime was asking what JK Rowling had said that was 'phobic, and also defending Rosie Duffield and Rachel Reeves in the UK Labour subs. It's so frustrating because shouldn't we be able to debate what actual Labour politicians have said in a UK Labour sub? If they don't like my opinions, can't they just downvote them? It is now SUCH an echo chamber.

I used to like debating the Red Pill knobheads back in the day, and it got pretty heated at times, but NEVER did I get even booted out of the sub never mind from the whole site.

Basically it needs an Elon takeover I guess.

littlbrowndog · 19/04/2023 11:40

I think Elon has now said on Twitter that you won’t be banned for misgendering or calling a man a man 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

Thank you. The annoying thing is that debates about gender/trans was only ever a very small part of my activity on Reddit. It just makes me think that I should have kept schtum about that in order to not be banned, and to be able to continue participating in the bits I liked, but of course that is how they effectively ban freedom of speech and pretend that everyone agrees with them (as @WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll says)

Sorry you had this happen to you too. It's probably the most blatant example of outright silencing of any opposing views that I've seen online, and there's a lot of competition. It does make me grateful for MN and the relatively open, diverse, and accountable moderation (usually!) that we have here.

Worth remembering that TwoXChromosomes was apparently so named as 'Women' was already taken as a porn sub. Because of course it was!

PM me if you'd like an invitation to Ovarit, OP. Some of the old gang from /r/GenderCritical hang out there now

r/women is no longer porn, it's a "safe respectful place to discuss the lives and stories of women of all backgrounds" etc.

It is (obvs) expressly trans friendly, however it also says that "invalidating the perspectives of other women is not allowed here", so it would be interesting to see where they draw a line there.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 19/04/2023 16:36

Does anyone use the GC thread on Tattle? It's pretty good and overlaps with plenty that's discussed here.

I'm fairly sure what they mean by that is 'TWAW and if you say anything other than that we'll ban you'.

YouJustDoYou · 19/04/2023 18:24

I once got temporarily banned for QUOTING something awful a transwoman said (think "i hate fucking T*ERFS, they all need to just fuck off and die"), I quoted what the guy had said, replying something like "well, that's not very nice" and I got banned and his shit calling for the death of women who weren't attracted to his lady penis got left up.

Reddit is chock full of American and uk teenagers who fully believe their opinions are facts and if you disagree you're committing an act of violence. It's a really bad echo chamber and lots of egging each other on to cut themselves off from family or friends who don't align themselves with their beliefs. Some parenting subs are good but overall makes me wonder how to keep my kids away from it when they're older.

I would just forget it and move on. Reddit is a cesspit that attracts a certain type of young men who are just not mature enough to be allowed out of their bedrooms. Challenor was only an embarrassment when he got found out.

If it's any consolation the transgender people I know arrive at the gym in gym gear and don't shower or change at the gym. They are not any more keen to change in front of you than you are keen in changing in front of them.

false generalisation and missing the point I'm afraid

The question is not at all 'are all transgender people exhibitionists / voyeurs?' I certainly don't think that and I've never seen any evidence that any woman here thinks that. The question is do you believe men who are voyeurs exist? Do you appreciate the lengths and extremes they are prepared to go to? (the men who ARE voyeurs) Do you believe that some men are exhibitionists? That they enjoy the sense of power and control of forcing women and girls to look at their genitals? That causing fear and upset to women is the thrill they're looking for? In short unsolicited dick picks can be very unpleasant but they are generally more intimidating irl? Do you appreciate that flashing used to be treated as a serious sexual offence as there were proven links in offending patterns from flashing to rape?

That is why we want single sex toilets and changing rooms. Because it's the only way to keep men who ARE like that out.

KalimbaMoon · 21/04/2023 09:37

Reddit is a cesspit. But although GC women have been silenced, there are some pretty controversial opinions being expressed on the detrans pages that would likely upset the TRAs. Some very harrowing stories on there.

All of this ^

The one and only time I used a ‘mixed sex changing village’ at a swimming baths a man old enough to be my father laid on the floor with his head underneath my cubicle partition wall.

Mixed sex spaces are not safe for women and I have spent twenty plus years organising my life around avoiding changing//toileting facilities that aren’t sex segregated.

I’ve been subjected to enough flashing in public spaces over the last 40 odd years (several incidents on the tube, walking to school, pushing my bike along the street, at a bus stop, in a crowd at a street party, at a playground for the under 5s with my toddler in tow) that I’d really like to retain one teeny, tiny part of the public sphere as a penis-free zone.

paperflowers55 · 21/04/2023 10:36

don't worry, OP. we know the issues Reddit has.
The big problem is that there is now a subset of extreme left wingers who are ruining things for women. They claim to dislike bigots etc but will engage in violent discourse and use TERF as a weaponized term against any woman voicing concerns (a la JK Rowling).
I personally feel as though none of the political movements right now care for women's rights any more. the right expects us to be obedient drones with no autonomy and the left expect us to share spaces with TW at the expense of our potential comfort and even safety.
It's not right and I'm waiting for someone to wake up and speak about it.
Also, for wiw I had a look at Ovarit and could only find a tiny fraction engaged in hate speech, most posts criticize unhinged social media posts threatening women.

paperflowers55 · 21/04/2023 10:38

true, and it's a shame they're being silenced as well. they literally have little support

paperflowers55 · 21/04/2023 10:41

but Elon is a misogynyst. The answer really doesn't lie in the other extreme. I don't want to follow Matt Walsh who thinks women are just walking incubators to get away from violent TRAs. I want a third option.
