Single sex schools will be able to refuse trans pupils - Daily Telegraph

This was the front page lead in this morning's print edition. Apologies if this is a thread already but I can't see it.

[[//www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/04/17/single-sex-schools-can-reject-transgender-pupils/]]

Government guidelines to be issued "within weeks" according to the DT will allow head teachers of girls and boys schools to reject applications from pupils who identify as the opposite gender. School leaders will also be told they can refuse to use different pronouns if they are demanded by a pupil.

Apparently the guidance will come after school leaders and governors met lawyers to discuss fears that they could be at risk of discrimination claims from the parents of trans-identified pupils if they refused to accommodate them. Schools will be reassured they would not be breaching the Equality Act
2010 if they did so.

The DT says the guidance is being drawn up by Edication Secretary Gillian Keegan and the equalities minister Kemi Badenoch and is intended to provide clarity amid the dramatic increase in the number of pupils saying they are trans.

Single-sex schools can reject transgender pupils

New guidelines mean head teachers will also not have to call children by their preferred pronouns, dispelling fears of discrimination claims

Interesting stuff I wonder if trans people will start campaigning for their own schools?

Nottodayplease36 · 18/04/2023 11:56

I hope this is true, finally some common sense.

MishyJDI · 18/04/2023 11:57

What a tolerant and loving society we now live in.

Where would you send the trans kids? To their own special camp for their safety? A trans kid at an all boy or girl school of the wrong gender will just get bullied. I guess they will be forced to mixed co-ed schools, and take their chances in the toilets. Sad days indeed. Such a hateful society. Jesus wept.

This doesn't really reassure me. It will be up to the individual head...all good assuming the head isn't a TWAW type

Yes, it needs to be a rule, not a guideline

zanahoria · 18/04/2023 12:03

So Single Sex schools means single sex schools?

Another headline that would have baffled readers only a few years back

Most schools are mixed

TidyDancer · 18/04/2023 12:06

This is brilliant news if it's set as a rule and not down to the whim of a potentially captured HT/senior management.

I would very much hope that we are striving for a society where people accept difference and that schools have robust anti-bullying policies to combat that sort of behaviour. I think that is the key to a lot of this stuff. Acceptance and inclusion in a very real sense - done honestly.

Or... send gender non-confirming children to mixed schools?

Can't they just go to a co-ed like the vast majority of kids? Or does that not suit their gender affirming needs? At a co-ed they are not pushing themselves into where they are not wanted. Parents send their children to all boys school because they don't want their sons to be distracted by girls, and vice versa. Single sex schools don't have two sets of changing rooms or other facilities and why should they? If the child decides to detransition they don't have to move schools.

Wasn't they something recently where on a school trip all the ftm trans boys were put in the same dorm and one kicked off because they were in a room of girls?

this post made me laugh so much. Not mixed “co-ed” schools! Not for the precious trans kids! Oh, the humanity!

Jesus wept, indeed.

ScrollingLeaves · 18/04/2023 12:17

It sounds as though the law is not clear, so the guidance will seem weightless.

SerafinasGoose · 18/04/2023 12:17

The headline is a bit of a transgression from the facts. Had the guidance intended to leave out all transgender pupils this is clear discrimination. What it's in fact saying is that the school will remain segregated by sex, meaning those who transition F2M will still be eligible to attend. Whether a single sex school is a place they feel comfortable in is for them to determine.

Single sex education has its benefits and I would not like to see this become a thing of the past. When it comes to kids struggling with their 'gender', this is simply another factor which will need taking account of when selecting which schools to attend; same as parents do with all other criteria.

Treating sex and gender as the separate entitles they are could avoid an awful lot of angst for a lot of people. To do otherwise is the antithesis of #BeKind. It's trans people, along with women and vulnerable minors, who are really copping the flack of an aggressive movement that's co-opted their interests when these are the least of their concerns.

It's the activists the kids need protection from.

titchy · 18/04/2023 12:19

Yes @MishyJDI awful isn't it. All those previous trans 10 year olds having to go to mixed schools. Just like the majority of other (equally precious) 10 year olds!

titchy · 18/04/2023 12:20

Precious not precious Blush

titchy · 18/04/2023 12:20

Co-Ed schools aren't some sort of horrible punishment 😂 If my child thought that they were trans then I would prefer Co-Ed where it would be easier to ask for flexibility on issues like uniform.

Shame that this policy will be at the discretion of head teachers as some will push their personal ideology instead.

Iwasafool · 18/04/2023 12:25

schools to reject applications from pupils who identify as the opposite gender. Sorry, find this confusing. Are they saying a biological boy who identifies as a girl can't go to a boys' school or a biological boy who identifies as a girl can't go to a girls' school? Or both?

It means that a boy who identifies as a girl can't go to a girls school.

MalagaNights · 18/04/2023 12:35

I wish the government would just get on and issue the guidance.

We've had a couple of years now of hopeful sounding messages but no government guidance for schools or legislation.

People in schools and LAs are stuck waiting for a green light to challenge and clarify school practice.

Just bloody get on with it.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/04/2023 12:35

If a school is single sex then it should remain so. Any potential student who does not meet the admissions criteria (in this case the criteria of Female/Male as per the relavent school) has to apply elsewhere.

MishyJDI · 18/04/2023 11:57

What a tolerant and loving society we now live in.

Coming from your side which is the most intolerant, authoritarian, abusive and violent this is irony indeed.

You don't want tolerance you will only accept total capitulation and punishment for not doing so.

GailBlancheViola · 18/04/2023 12:43

You mean like girls are having to do at the moment?
