Drag queen storytime should be allowed in schools for ‘inclusivity’, says teachers’ union

I cannot understand why any teacher continues with his or her membership of the NEU.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/04/05/drag-queen-story-time-allowed-schools-teachers-union-neu/

"Drag queens should be invited into schools to help challenge the “heteronormative culture and curriculum”, the country’s biggest teaching union has said.

Members of the National Education Union (NEU) voted to support initiatives like drag queen storytime at a conference in Harrogate on Wednesday morning.

Drag queens and LGBT+ authors visiting schools challenge the “heteronormative culture and curriculum that dominates education”, the approved motion stated.

NEU members agreed that the Government is “creating a hostile environment” for trans people by blocking Scotland’s gender reform plans to allow people over 16 to change their legal sex by signing a statutory declaration.

This has “encouraged the far-Right to organise further attacks on drag queen storytime and has created an atmosphere where hate crime can thrive,” they said.

Shelby Millard, a teacher at the conference, told delegates: “The fact that Rishi Sunak has used Section 35 to stop the Scottish Gender Recognition Reform Act is sickening.”

She claimed that he is “supporting the far-Right attacks on drag queen story time”."

Much more on the Telegraph linked above.

Alternative trades unions for teachers and lecturers include Affinity https://workaffinity.co.uk/ or if you just want the backing of some legal advice Edapt (not a trades union , edu-law specialist, not quite the same) https://www.edapt.org.uk/ . Teachers in my family have mostly recently switched to Edapt but if their schools were particularly tough or employment likely to be less stable they'd have gone for Affinity.

It's all about the TQ+ and no one else gets a look in.
Trade Unions have really lost their way though.

Yes… to the point that no one cares about all the other individuals and groups who may be excluded by this focus on TQ+ stuff.

If you want to challenge heteronormativity, why skip past the LGB part and go straight to drag queens in sparkly rainbows (who may well be heterosexual!)?

Why should lesbians and gay men always be represented by exhibitionist men in drag?

Conservative yes but they have a male, female & gender neutral areas. Trans there have their spaces & don't feel the need to encroach on women's. It comes down to respect & the Japanese as a race are very respectful especially towards their elderly.

PorcelinaV · 05/04/2023 16:37

So they want indoctrination of a captive audience with immature minds and backed by public money.

Kids don't need to be worrying about "heteronormativity" at all, but if you want that debate, then also bring in conservatives that support the traditional family and critics of gender ideology. After all, they believe in being "inclusive" right?

Let’s not present Japan as a utopia of inclusivity, respect and gender equality.

Not a brilliant record in terms of women’s rights. See also South Korea.

Then there’s the ridiculous comparisons completely ignoring all the other cultural and social and political differences between countries aspect of all this.

This seems like the dumbest move a teaching union could make. Don't they want parental support in their negotiations for a wage increase? Aren't they trying to tell the public that schools are overwhelmed and keep having more and more dumped on them?

How then, does anything that:

  • adds to teacher time
  • tramples over safeguarding
  • has a loose (at best) connection with learning

help them to convince parents to lend their support to them as a profession? It doesn't.

It has the look and feel of them having been infiltrated by those who would like to demonstrate they're nuts and not worth being paid more. Like they've been hacked in real life or something Confused

SimplyAverage · 05/04/2023 16:44

I am now very suspicious of those trying to ban home education.

Abhannmor · 05/04/2023 16:44

Tras are trying to cash in on the love for Paul O'Grady but he retired his alter ego , Lily Savage , long before DQST existed here.

Then they , ahem , drag up Danny La Rue. But he was a devout Catholic. He played both drag and panto and always said panto was a completely different form of theatre to adult drag shows.

I can't imagine either of these guys doing DQST .

twelly · 05/04/2023 16:45

Absolutely appalling - the sad thing is that I think there are a large number of teachers disagree with this approach, I find it hard to comprehend how the profession who elects members to vote has let this happen. I think respect for teachers will fall. I agree with inclusitivioty but this has now been highjacked by this particular pressure group who seem to have got leverage to pass this type of vote

I cannot comment on this particular union, however in the case of the ridiculous (and illegal) policy being pushed by the EIS in Scotland with regards to trans children I can 100% confirm that the EIS is NOT representative of it's teaching members.

Take a look at the comments under their guidance tweet and you will see that 100% of the replies by Scottish teachers are highly critical of their policies and shine a light on safeguarding/legal concerns.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is the case with this too. Unions powering ahead to virtue signal without actually consulting their members.

Bláthannabuí · 05/04/2023 16:46

Ireland has Panti Bliss. An absolute pathetic excuse for a man who called for Posie Parker & the women attending her rally to be attacked at her Dublin event.

Inaea · 05/04/2023 16:47

What about schoolchildren’s class time is spent learning actual facts from actual qualified teachers? Just a thought.

If you watch the Triggernometry episode with Matt Goodwin, you may think that it's OK for respect for Teachers to drop. They can't go around behaving like Jeffrey Marsh then act the victims.

Inaea · 05/04/2023 16:48

Amazing that any teachers wouls think children in a classroom - who have no choice about being there - should be used as props to validate someone else’s fantasy.

SimplyAverage · 05/04/2023 16:51

Children aren't unconsenting props and you can't remove parental responsibility without a court order.

Fluffymule · 05/04/2023 16:58

What inclusivity does a child learn by being part of an activity, reading or performance, led by a male adult entertainer made up and dressed in a hyper cartoonish parody of a sexualised woman?

Is the child supposed to think that this represents what being 'gay' is?

Would we not prefer children to see role models from everyday professions, firefighters, nurses, military, engineers, just a few examples, who just happen to be gay men or lesbian women.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 05/04/2023 17:01

Silly thing is, DQST doesn't challenge anything at all. What kids see is a performer dressed up in bright whacky clothes like nothing anyone of either sex wears in real life, might as well be a clown suit or a panto dame. Unless they're reading "John and Jane swap sexes and go to Pride" they're challenging nothing.

Seriously thinking of emigrating to avoid this crap.

Not sure where you would go to avoid all this crap!

ThunderDad · 05/04/2023 17:02

Looks like my posts are being censored on this thread. Criticism of allowing drag queens in schools not allowed is it?

Bláthannabuí · 05/04/2023 17:08

Well to me it seems that like in Ireland with trans ideology brought into primary schools they are bypassing the parents & going straight for the kids. Where is the safeguarding? And safeguarding on every level.

PorcelinaV · 05/04/2023 17:08

Parky04 · 05/04/2023 17:01

Well Saudi, but er...

ThunderDad · 05/04/2023 17:08

PorcelinaV · 05/04/2023 17:08

Well Saudi, but er...

Yeah you would avoid it there. Probably a bit far to the other extreme though!

ArabellaScott · 05/04/2023 17:40

Bring this shit into school and let's see how that goes.

nepeta · 05/04/2023 17:46

So inclusion now means having to include misogynistic caricatures of women so that young children learn it's perfectly fine to laugh at the sex their mothers are? Without balancing it with something where the male sex is ridiculed equally?

I can't get my head around this at all.

Helleofabore · 05/04/2023 17:54

this is madness OP. It really is.
