Tune in the BBC Radio 4's Anti Social programme at noon today to hear our spokeswoman Tanya Carter discuss the #RSEDebate with Sophie Whitehead from the School of Sexuality Education.

She will be discussing topics such as how to protect girls in schools from sexual harassment and whether modelling genitals out of play doh helps. She will be talking about the importance of putting #safeguarding at the heart of all school policies and how this is particularly important for RSE. She will hopefully be discussing some of the examples that have been shared with us by parents and teachers and explaining why they contravene safeguarding frameworks, government guidance, and the law.

This is what we have previously written about SoSE:

We hope to also be able to discuss this book as whilst the topic of tomorrow’s debate is explicit sex education and not gender identity ideology in schools, there is very much crossover between the two subjects.

I find it hard to believe that the woman from School of sexuality has never heard of the dice game until now....It's been very much talked about.

ArabellaScott · 17/03/2023 12:27

Well, if she's in a bubble that refuses to listen to any parents who aren't flagwaving upholders of the orthodoxy then it's almost possible.

nauticant · 17/03/2023 12:43

Sophie Whitehead is playing a neat game here where she talks about all the good things that in SoSE's materials while at the same time as not making them readily available to parents.

Flowersinmai · 17/03/2023 12:45

Im listening now. I feel the education provider is really not taking responsibility. With a definite 'I am right agenda'.
Safe school alliance lady is not so polished but you can see she cares so much.

nauticant · 17/03/2023 12:48

That's exactly how I'm hearing it.

Sophie Whitehead's approach seems to be that the main thing is that well meaning people are involved working from the right (progressive) motives.

happydappy2 · 17/03/2023 12:48

On school of sexualitys website-they have a quote from a child saying-I really like how the workshop remained inclusive, and it was acknowledged that not all people with boobs/vaginas are female, or that penis=male.

This doesn't seem scientifically accurate to me.....

2fallsfromSSA · 17/03/2023 12:49

Sophie is being disingenuous. School of Sex Ed have blocked SSA on twitter. She is not engaging with the issues. That is my view. Tanya is doing a good job of bringing it back to safeguarding.

It isn't this was the politically motivated language that tanya alluded to.

Sophie Whitehead is coming across like a simpering, disingenuous numpty. Sidestepping.

Flowersinmai · 17/03/2023 12:53

Looking at the approach page of the School of sex Ed the are very political - decolonization and intersectionality.
Fascinating that Schools are still using them, despite these obvious biases.
I wouldn’t want them anywhere near my child’s.

Zeugma · 17/03/2023 12:56

Listening now. Tanya has been cut off more than once. Not so the other guest, who seems to have been given more time to speak. Hmm.

Flowersinmai · 17/03/2023 12:58

Also worth looking at the sponsors of school for sex ed. Some companies to avoid there

Birdsweepsin · 17/03/2023 12:58

Well done Tanya! 👏

AlliwantforChristmasisgu · 17/03/2023 12:59

I think Sophie came across well to someone coming to this cold. Her line was essentially ‘protect children by giving them knowledge’ as far as I could tell.

it is difficult as this topic covers such a wide range of issues from ‘should children be taught gender identity as fact’ to ‘how much should you teach children of a given age about sex and sexual pleasure’.

3littlebeans · 17/03/2023 13:00

Just been listening to this amd came on to see if there was a thread!

Interesting they tried to make it all about things that we agree are good "consent" etc and make out that the criticism is just that under 16s shouldn't be having sex rather than the real issues.

nauticant · 17/03/2023 13:02

One problem that didn't come out in the programme is the SoSE is part of the crowbar that's letting in stuff like the infamous Dice Game but then, as we heard on the programme, when she's asked about it she can go "nothing to do with me guv".
