Isla Bryson asked for £5,000 over 'deadnaming'

BT apparently misgendered Isla, and she went to the papers about it:

'She said: “I have been asking them to change my name for almost a year but I keep getting letters with my dead name on it.

“I sent proof of my gender identity but it hasn’t made a difference. I’m sick of being treated like a second class citizen.”

BT apologised for the mix-up and offered Bryson £140. But she said: “It’s had a seriously emotional effect on me. They’ve tried to buy me off but I said I wanted £5,000 in compensation.”'

he, not be

feellikeanalien · 31/01/2023 14:20

I quite often get called by my late DPs surname even though we never got married. Maybe I should make a claim!!

ErrolTheDragon · 31/01/2023 14:22

Isn't one of the (maybe the only concrete?) criteria for someone having 'changed gender' for the requisite 3 months prior to getting a GRC in Scotland that you can show you've changed your title/name on a utility bill?

ErrolTheDragon · 31/01/2023 14:23

What fucking "proof" of his gender identity could be possibly have??

Some other utility bill with the new name.

ResisterRex · 31/01/2023 14:23

It's not a previous name! He's not legally changed!

ReunitedThorns · 31/01/2023 14:26

So, while he was awaiting trial for rape, he went to the newspaper about being 'dead named' on a 'phone bill? The brass neck of this guy!

Of course the newspaper may not have made the connection because he would have been charged in his male name.

Or rather to provide "proof" that he was "living as a woman" to court if there was a newspaper article about how difficult his transition was.

I think this was all part of the plan to get off of the rape charges.

AnyFucker · 31/01/2023 14:28

Haha good one, Adam. You’re a funny guy, for sure.

BringItOn2023 · 31/01/2023 14:29

Noticed how he always wears his hair to cover his face. Not sure why that bothers me.

I assume that's in large part to hide the tattoos, it does look weird and dodgy.

EzzieM · 31/01/2023 14:35

On what basis does the rapist want £5000?

Using someone’s birth name, (instead of whatever today’s alias is) is not a crime in the UK.

Harassment is a crime, but one that is almost never prosecuted (unless it is a trans person feeling harassed, in which case, the police will be on it immediately).

But nonetheless, the British police, notorious for having little grasp of the actual law, sometimes say that using the birth name of a transperson is harassment and is therefore a crime.

I’d really like some clarity on this. Is so-called ‘deadnaming’ and ‘misgendering’ illegal in the UK? I don’t see how it can be, but transpeople and sometimes the police behave as if it is.

In writing the above, I have been careful to refer to the rapist as the rapist to avoid causing the rapist offence. 🙄

Oh I assumed the face-hiding is to make it easier for him to reoffend when he’s released. 😔

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 31/01/2023 14:52

It took months and calls from two separate (living) members of the family to get BT to stop charging my husband's DEAD grandmother. She had been buried a long time before it was sorted.

I think her children would like compensation please!

He can have 5000 fuck offs instead.

Then I really am out of fucks to give about the gender ideology bullshit.

Spot on 😂😂😂😂

FrancescaContini · 31/01/2023 14:56

Oh boo hoo for this MAN

With the shiny, completely bald head beneath, the man-size head in a woman-size wig and the jaunty, tattoo-covering angle, I find myself wondering how on earth the thing doesn’t slide right off and land in his lap?

Anyone else here have their foreign name misspelled constantly?

Mis-spelled and mispronounced and mines a not exactly unknown Irish name. There are two relatively famous people with the same name.

Anyway, if Adam has had the £140, they ought to be told that they can keep a penny and put the rest toward the criminal injuries compensation of his two victims.

Igneococcus · 31/01/2023 15:23

Anyone else here have their foreign name misspelled constantly?

All the fecking time and my ego has survived completely unscathed.

BoredOfThisMansWorld · 31/01/2023 12:55

Oh fantastic!

Anyone else here have their foreign name misspelled constantly?

Or have it assumed that they took their partner's surname or wish to disclose their marital status?

I'd be happy with £140 for every time that happened, tbh. I'd be quids in

Bloody car dealer I bought from used the male equivalent of my name and changed me to Mr because I couldn't possibly be the one buying the car...

Lilavanblue · 31/01/2023 15:28

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 31/01/2023 13:29

I've had my (very British) surname misspelled
I've been addressed in work documents as 'Dear Sir' - hell, I've been called 'Sir' F2F (I have short hair) when I was buying the Times because 'it's usually men who buy the Times.' 🤔
I've been called Mrs when I'm not.
I've talked to overseas colleages who called me by my surname because the convention in their country is surname then first name so they assumed my surname was my first name

Can I have my thousands for hurtyfeelz plz?

My husband also had his British name misspelled and mispronounced many many times.
I’ve been addressed by the wrong name more than once (mostly emails and letters).
Just a couple of weeks ago I had a phone call with an agent. The call was followed by an email (from the same person). He addressed me by a clearly male name even though he had just spoken to me on the phone and my voice is clearly female.

I like to think he turned round too fast and the wig glue didn't hold.

Again it's another stage-managed thing to try to gain sympathy in the court. He's covering up his tattoos.

His legal team are telling him what to do to get off of the charges (which failed) and what to do to get an easier time in prison (by going to a women's prison).

The man is using all the loopholes to pretend to be trans. Is he interested in passing? No, because he's not trans. He's doing what he needs to do for the legal system to believe him.

No doubt this whole trans shtick will disappear when it all fails and he is definitely put in a men's prison.

Ah, of course. I hadn't connected the 'utility bill' requirement with the proof needed to change sex. But there it is.

Yes, exactly. Everyone knew it, but the courts had to pretend to believe the whole chrade.
