Call to boycott new Harry Potter game over JK Rowling trans comments fails

Despite the controversy surrounding the author, Hogwarts Legacy game was the top-selling title on PC distribution platform Steam on Monday and Tuesday, ahead of other high-profile releases such as "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II" and "Destiny 2".

It was also the best-selling title in the PlayStation Store's "coming soon" category this week, ahead of other much-anticipated games such as "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor" and "Dead Space."

The fan fervour around the game, due to be released on February 10th, has not stopped trans activists and supporters from trying to derail its launch, with some adding ‘transphobic’ tags to the game’s page on Steam, though these were quickly deleted. ...

On its FAQ page about the game, publishing company Warner Bros.Games said it was "not a new story" from her.

It added: "J.K. Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game, however, her extraordinary body of writing is the foundation of all projects in the Wizarding World."

Good to know that a commercial company has more ethics then the pathetic little film "stars" who are happy to advance themselves through her work, but fail to acknowledge her.

Brazilian prostitutes are not, regardless of their sex, endangered by video games. Not even “Grand Theft Auto”. Words, even super mean ones, are not violence; and they are certainly not literal violence.

Nobody is endangered by the existence of this game - what causes damage, however, is TRAs endless shrieking about an imminent trans genocide; literal violence; & the “fact” that simply to exist as a trans person is enraging the transphobes/Nazis/fash/[alt-]right/other ill-defined bogeyman & they will physically harm you as soon as look at you. Messages like that are deleterious for health & wellbeing.

There's a lot of things going on with the hate towards JKR. The main one being that she's a mother-like figure to these activists, who are rebelling against their own mothers telling them "no, you can't transition to be a teenage catgirl", it also seems convenient that Harry Potter exists in so many forms. You can't look a movies, games, books, Lego etc without having the whole trans debate shoved down your throat.

A lot of these games websites are fronts for activism and you will find from time-to-time essays talking down to readers about trans rights etc. Also interesting that a number of game writers are transbians, who can't get any other jobs.

Two weeks later I thought some of you might be interested on a different take of the attempt to boycott the Harry Potter game which is still selling very strongly.
This is a you tuber called Asmongold. He's quite sarcastic so take what he says with a pinch of salt. e.g. Sometimes he agrees with stupid things to pretend to jump on the stupidity bandwagon, but he never has the patience to not give his true opinion. He's not afraid to speak his mind.
On this HP boycott he doesn't come at it from either "side" he just tells why he thinks the idea is stupid and highlights some hypocrisy. He's commentating on another you tuber's video who does have a side.
I thought it's interesting because it's a very different point of view to see the situation from and it can be good to get an outsider's take.
He's a popular you tuber with a lot of followers who covers video games.

LOL I never would have expected to see Asmongold on Mumsnet. Asmongold often has reasonable opinions though he comes off a bit weird to people who do not know him but I occasionally watch his videos he is funny.

He is right most people don't care about boycotting the game. They have no fucks to give and many will probably buy it just because some were calling for boycots. He is right that people are tired of TRA.

Another two weeks later update.
It's still top of the steam charts by money coming in. It actually releases and becomes playable this Friday. Games usually enjoy a big boost in sales on release. This is usually visible by the game moving to the top of the charts as the cash pours in. We won't be able to see this because it's already top of the charts.
In terms of the boycott it is not possible for the boycott to be more of a failure than it already is.
The bean counters will already be eyeing up a second one to rake in even more money off the back of how sucessful the first one has been.

I downloaded the game files on the PS5 last night to be ready for tonight's pre-release of the deluxe version. It's the 2nd highest selling game for my country in the PS store.

Hogwarts Legacy reviews are coming in and the feedback is great.
