www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/mcgill-backlash-anti-trans-talk-1.6708251

TRA's in Canada stormed a Montreal Quebec McGill University's Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism (CHRLP) hosted the event, titled Sex vs. Gender (Identity) Debate In the United Kingdom and the Divorce of LGB from T. It was led by McGill alumnus Robert Wintemute.

The talk was cancelled shortly after.

The CHRLP's website describes the event as a conversation around whether the law should make it easier for a transgender person to change their legal sex, "and about exceptional situations, such as women-only spaces and sports, in which the individual's birth sex should take priority over their gender identity, regardless of their legal sex."

"The T (trans) is so much more vulnerable than the rest of LGB. I think there's tons of scientific evidence speaking to that," said Celeste Trianon, a trans activist who led the protest against the event.

Trianon said Wintemute's talk excludes transgender people's rights and is transphobic, further discriminating against the community.

But Wintemute, the man at the centre of the controversy, maintains he does not promote transphobic views and describes the reaction to his talk as "hysterical."

He says he has a 37 years' experience defending LGB human rights and he would never associate with any group that "promotes hate." He said he came to McGill to promote the message that women have human rights too, but they feel intimidated by the trans rights movement.

"So I have to thank the protesters for giving me first-hand experience of that intimidation," said Wintemute after the event. "Probably the majority of women in this country disagree with some of transgender demands but they refuse to say so because they will be seen as intolerant."

But I am wondering if things are starting to change?

This is surely going to be linked to the teacher with the absurd fake breasts, and all the drag queen absurdity, and Amy Hamm, and males in women's prisons, and the father sent to prison for refusing to use certain pronouns for his child.

Surely? Surely at some point, Canadians will wake up?

'The activists particularly harassed two women, pushing one to the ground, and blasting them with bullhorns. At one point, the activists jeered: “Why are you even staying?” One of the women responded, very bravely, I could just hear her over the noise: “We don’t want to surrender to that kind of bullying.” And the activist shouted back: “What bullying? This isn’t bullying!”'

Fucking hell.

nauticant · 11/01/2023 17:41

I think an inherent instability in gender identity ideology is that it cannot operate in a state of compromise. One reason being that compromise requires both sides to recognise some kind of balance between their own rights and those of the opposition. Since it seems to be fundamental to the ideology to refuse to recognise any conflict of rights then compromise just isn't a thing. For this reason I think that trans activists will always push things to the limit and if the public gets to see more of this as time goes on, then trans activists will ultimately discredit their cause. Fingers crossed.

'Though Canada and Quebec have remained "mostly sheltered" from transphobic rhetoric, those ideas have gained momentum in the U.S. and the U.K. and could easily spread here, said Trianon.'

Dear god won't somebody protect people from these dangerous ideas!

Wow! I left to feed my little and came back to do many replies! Your comment made me laugh I must confess.

I don't think Canada is as sheltered as they think and even if they are I can see they are tiring of it all. I think we have a culture of keeping our heads down and staying quiet for the sake of everyone else. Don't rock the boat. Don't make a big fuss and draw attention to yourself.

The teacher with the fake breasts drew a lot of attention to himself and I think that created a very big current that will build. We GC Canadian women should send him a thank you letter! 😂

Sort of thing that the Hitler youth did in storming meetings and intimidating everyone who didn’t agree with them. Is the sign of someone with a weak argument that they have to use the sort of tactics as they are terrified of logical argument

Also like the red guards in China's Cultural Revolution. Chillingly similar.

onyttig · 11/01/2023 18:00

The idea of genocide as used by TRAs is absurd. Even if their claims around suicide were true (and not horribly distorted and deeply problematic), that is completely different from ‘genocide’.

it’s really offensive to make these kind of claims about genocide. It’s not a trivial terms to be thrown around and redefined in ridiculous ways.

Except all done rather in the manner of an overprivileged and over excited prince being a boor in a Nazi uniform.

I was sure J Yaniv would pique Canada's curiosity. That was years ago... maybe he did and no-one was allowed to talk about it?

The only people in Canada I see openly questioning that are the American worshipping trump make Canada great again hat wearing types. So not really the types you would want to share your feelings with really. At least not for myself.

When I clicked on the link it was the second most read story, I wonder if they've changed the headline because it's different from the url. I couldn't see any comments and I couldn't find it on the newspaper's twitter.

I also noticed this story on that site (written by Tyler CheeseGrin)

www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/fully-alive-catholic-textbooks-homophobia-transphobia-1.6709426

I carry no torch for either side, but this quote from the 2slbgtqwerty+++ bod, leapt out at me

"They provide developing minds as young as Grade 1 with sexualized notions of self that adhere with the Catholic faith but are at odds with the reality of science and nature,"

Also, while trying to find a news item that was reporting on the ongoing Amy Hamm case (nope), I came across this headline about fellow Canadian Shania Twain in the Times.

I would flatten my boobs until there was nothing girl about me.

It refers to tring to avoid unwanted sexual attention from her step-father. If she'd been born a couple of decades later I don't doubt she'd have been encouraged to ruin her body, and her voice. I still don't think she would have been asked 'why?' once she saidthe magic words.

Yes, true. I just remembered Toronto Public Library with Meghan Murphy. Three years ago.

The reports mostly have completely avoided the terrifying aggressive threats made to women attending.

The eejit in the rainbow top looks just like a toddler having a tantrum.

Delphinium20 · 11/01/2023 22:12

Protesting is one thing. Blocking an event and holding attendees hostage within a mob is dangerous anti-democracy.

mach2 · 11/01/2023 22:16

When I saw footage of students holding staff hostage at Evergreen after Brett Weinstein's stand I thought of Mao's Red Guards. Staff ended up in a "struggle session" because of the intimidation.

How much longer....?

I can never decide whether we are getting to peak madness, and soon institutions are going to get firm with all this bullshit.
Or whether we are witnessing the beginning of some authoritarian madness that is going to grip society for decades.. like a prelude to 1984/handmaids tale...

I am unsure.

I often struggle with it as well... What's worse is they are never satisfied. They always want more more more. They will stop at nothing I suppose until they are regarded as Kings and Queen's.

Something to be thankful for:

Peaking is a one way street.

Many of us on this board may have started out as pro-trans of the 'be kind' brigade.... And then once we spent a little time thinking about the reality and consequences of men saying they are women, maybe we read some stories or looked into what JK Rowling said... Well then we peaked and our eyes opened.

I think its a one way street. I don't think anyone has peaked/been GC and THEN become a TRA.

I never thought of it that way but you're right. I've never heard of it happening the other way around. There may be hope yet. 🤔

We had these sort of left-wing activists when I was at university and they are completely unreasonable and completely unprepared to allow anyone else their point of view. They will shout people down and intimidate people and call that democracy

Here is Celeste, self defined as transfeminine (all one word).

You’d have thought Québécois universities would’ve had enough of angry men using violence against women. Plus ca change…

On the face of it I prefer 'transfeminine' because that's more accurate as to what it is. Feminine, not female.

Abhannmor · 12/01/2023 15:08

Shame really but you can see Canada 🍁 swinging hard right. Trudeau is presiding over a very unequal society while he genuflects to this nonsense.

Vancouver , eg , is a beautiful place yet homelessness , drug addiction and poverty are off the scale. Ditto California and the Pacific Northwest.

Biden and Trudeau would lose to a conservative who is not clinically insane. Therein lies the difficulty!

Sort of language they use. What they mean is ‘we are going to stop anyone who disagrees with us using their right of free speech.’

reduxx.info/canada-trans-activist-who-shut-down-gender-critical-event-provides-children-with-prosthetic-penises/

'Trianon is also the Director of TransEstrie, which “provides trans, non-binary, and questioning people with access to products that are not widely available in the area, such as binders, packers, gaffs, and breastforms.”
Penis “packers” advertised on the site of Trianon’s organization, TransEstrie

TransEstrie works in partnership with a company called Banana Prosthetics to advertise prosthetic penises known euphemistically as ‘packers’ – some of which are designed to resemble the genitalia of prepubescent boys and intended to be worn by very young girls.

“Young trans or non-binary boys need age-appropriate prostheses and that’s why we offer them the possibility of getting packers, stand-to-pee and boxers that meet their needs,” reads the site. “We also have the possibility to order packers suitable for even younger boys.”

Trianon’s organization invites youth to directly contact the organization to make an appointment to try on the gear available.'
