9 unwhipable MSPs could be a massive headache for Nicola.

Pity my constituency MSP wasn't one of them.

ArabellaScott · 27/10/2022 23:12

Yes, good to see this. Very brave, all of them.

ArabellaScott · 27/10/2022 23:19

'Almost one in seven SNP MSPs rebelled, with more nationalists expected to defy the whips’ orders in the coming months as the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill progresses through parliament.
Sources have said some SNP rebels were offered promotions to fall in line while others were threatened with punishment by whips.'

JanieAllen · 27/10/2022 23:29

Apparently they will deselect them. I wonder if local SNP groups will comply?

Really?!

JanieAllen · 27/10/2022 23:44

I'm pretty sure I read that... somewhere... yeah thats how they keep them in line worried they will lose their £89 000 a year job

I'm hearing the majority of the SNP activists think GRA reform is a pile of pants and its a tiny minority who are pushing it trhough. If the majority just refuse to comply this could be stopped.

Same tactic with Greens when Andy Whiteman wasn't complying well enough.

I hope they stand firm and I hope the light shines on the bullying tactics taking place.

JanieAllen · 27/10/2022 23:50

I keep hoping this will be Nicolas Waterloo!

Next year she could be hanging out on St Helena!

Glad most Tory MSPs voted against. Shame on the 3 who didn't.

wesayno · 28/10/2022 00:36

Wonder how many would have voted against it had it been a free vote.

Yes, although I do have respect for people who vote according to conscience despite their party line. That does take courage, even if I think their decision was misguided.

Looking harder at the Labour MSPs, to be honest, and hoping they do as they say they will and ensure new measures are introduced to safeguard women and children and better uphold the EA.

The fact is that the EA and the GRA do overlap and confuse each other. That's a situation that has been uneasy and unclear for too long - maybe this is a good opportunity to really clarify once and for all the single sex exemptions, how they work, that they have primacy over 'gender', and how they are to be enforced and overseen.

MarshaBradyo · 28/10/2022 08:59

Good on them, really brave

XanaduKira · 28/10/2022 09:05

Good on them - just wish more had voted against.

This was mentioned on the Today programme on R4 just after 8.30 this morning. Mishal Husein said it wasn't clear to her how a man can live as a woman or how that would be defined in the legislation.

ArabellaScott · 28/10/2022 09:24

Comment on the Mail there asks why so many MSPs are voting against the wishes of their constituents. It's a good question.

Mishal was spot on. How DOES a man live as a woman?

FrancescaContini · 28/10/2022 09:28

And well done to those seven MSPs. Wouldn’t it be great if they all donned JKR’s t-shirt?

PriOn1 · 28/10/2022 09:30

From the Times:

”The new system proposed for Scotland would allow people to change their biological sex by signing a declaration”

Pretty sure signing a declaration doesn’t change your biological sex…

But good to here there WAS a revolt. We can only hope that others will find their courage before the next vote.
