Misogyny against Liz Truss

PersonaNonGarter · 24/07/2022 13:31

Is anyone else seeing endless misogyny against Liz Truss painting her as ‘thick’ or ‘stupid’? While there’s an acceptance that Rishi is a clever nerd?

I am finding it quite disconcerting. Both she and Rishi Sunak have PPE degrees from Oxford. Yet so many memes about her being dumb. I haven’t seen any attacking Rishi’s intelligence.

Obviously, many many people disagree with them both politically. But that’s not what I am talking about. This is about a specific sort of criticism that really seems directed at her as a woman.

I’m not sure what your point is jgw1 but no matter, I have had one circular conversation with you and am not interested in a second. This is your single, courtesy reply, and now good day.

Surely, the point here is that Ireland has eventually got there, in its own time?

These UN has no power to FORCE countries to do anything. The UN is a co-operative / collaborative enterprise among its member countries that discusses and proposes activity upon which countries can all agree. It is then for those countries to achieve those aspirations as and when they are able. Some countries are able to achieve them faster than others. Ireland took its time but has eventually achieved it. Now Ireland needs to delver it.

if you think that a resolution on rights that permits banning all abortions is equivalent to one that explicitly grants it is the same you are clearly not serious in your support for those rights.

antifascist · 25/07/2022 08:39

Ireland didn't "get there in its own time" Irel;and got there because of a massive national campaign for a referendum which changed the country's constitution under which abortion was banned,

I don't think Truss is stupid at all. There are also a lot of possible deliberate misinterpretions of what she says, for example she never encouraged anyone to run away and fight in Ukraine as per PP mentioning it but it was widely reported in the press that she did because it makes a funny story or a useful attack line. She is, however, very gaffe prone and that should probably rule her out however unfair that may seem.

One of the drawbacks of a written Constitution. The government could otherwise have simply passes an Act of Parliament.

Compare the madness over gun rights in the USA.

Abhannmor · 25/07/2022 09:03

Well @Alltheprettyseahorses she has been in the Cabinet since 2014. Has held lots of posts without any distinction - apart from being the 2nd worst Foreign Secretary of all time. Wants to start a trade war with EU and a literal war in Ireland.

I agree the media should stop focusing on her attire and daft publicity stunts and judge her on her record. Although they did focus on 'dishy Rishi' and his smart suits a while back. He has got off a bit lightly because A he's more of a newby and B. Covid meant he had to do nice stuff like the furlough scheme.

My point is @Floisme to reiterate the important point that the deputy PM made a few weeks ago that misogyny against men and women is bad.

One cannot be misogynistic about men. Misogyny is hatred of females.

You may have meant to use misandry in relation to males.

The point is that it is for each democratic country to reach the point where a majority of citizens agree in favour of access to abortion and their elected representatives vote in favour of any such law. UK was in the fortunate position of having a strong feminist movement in the 1960s which secured a law in favour of abortion in 1967, over a decade before CEDAW was approved.

The point is that Raab said misogyny against men is a thing. A Cambridge AND Oxford graduate who is as thick as pigshit

In other news, Nadine Dorries- who is even thicker than Raab and Truss- is trending on Twitter this morning for this little gem of a tweet twitter.com/NadineDorries/status/1551459390502440960?t=53GnTsSbgIH2CgN1CI6ECw&s=19

Get a cup of tea and read the comments if you want an enjoyable half hour 🤣

When Truss puts Dorries in her cabinet I think MNHQ should just close this thread because the case will be closed 🙈

Have you met or worked with Liz truss?

don’t assume it is misogyny

DH has and described her as odious.

I agree there is misogyny in some media reports, but she really hasn't helped herself a) with the constant photo ops in front of flags and b) she often says things which are really really silly.

I did think she did well when she said she might not be the most polished [I can't recall the exact words] but that she gets things done. I would like to hear more about her specific achievements to be able to judge her on her merits.

No, no, Dominic Raab that well known intellect said it quite recently that misogyny against men is a problem as well as against women.

We all know that the whole point of the trade deal with New Zealand is for Liz Truss to be able to say she did a trade deal with New Zealand.
It is much like Boris' oven ready Brexit deal that he did not read.

Great for everyone except the UK.

CSWife · 25/07/2022 12:23

Slightly going off topic and not really for the Fem board part of this discussion, but it's worth remembering we have this shit show of a selection before us, because BJ specifically filled his cabinet with people who would make him look good (ish!!!) and wouldn't challenge him. What he didn't do was pick the best people for their briefs. Ergo where we are now.

He also booted out a heap of centrists from the party after one of the Brexit related votes (I don't recall the details or timing but people like Ken Clarke and Rory Stewart) so the Tory MPs post 2019 election are all v right wing or represent red wall constituencies. God help us all.

Question: "President Zelensky has asked for people from abroad to volunteer to go and fight in Ukraine, do you support that?"

Liz Truss "I do support that" adding it was up to people to make their own decisions, but argued it was a battle "for democracy".

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-60544838.amp

Seems pretty crystal clear that she supported British citizens (no mention of previous military experience) to volunteer to go and fight in Ukraine. I mean what could possibly go wrong with that idea!!!

Liz Truss is most definitely not PM material is is quite simply dangerous.

maddy68 · 25/07/2022 12:46

TBF she's thick and says really daft things I don't think that is necessary misogyny I'm seeing similar sniping towards rishi. (Can't stand either to be frank )

I hope she gets it - I really can't see rushi sunak kicking ass and getting the Tory gov into line, which is what will be needed when it goes to hell in a hand basket this winter.

Blossomtoes · 25/07/2022 16:42

Ken Clarke retired surely. Rory stepped down

Eventually. Johnson removed the whip from them while they were still MPs.

On 3 September 2019, the British Conservative Party withdrew the whip from 21 of its MPs who had supported an emergency motion to allow the House of Commons to undertake proceedings on the European Union (Withdrawal) (No. 6) Bill on 4 September.[1] In the hours after the vote, the Chief Whip Mark Spencer informed the rebel MPs that they were no longer entitled to sit as Conservatives.[2][3] This led to the loss of the Conservative/DUP majority in the Commons.

The suspended MPs included two former Chancellors of the Exchequer (Philip Hammond and the Father of the House, Kenneth Clarke), seven other former Cabinet members (Greg Clark, David Gauke, Justine Greening, Dominic Grieve, Oliver Letwin, Caroline Nokes and Rory Stewart), and 12 others including Nicholas Soames, grandson of Winston Churchill.[

Yes our media are misogynistic - but I felt the times this Sunday was preferring LT to RS.

SaintHelena · 25/07/2022 16:46

The bail outs RS did during lock down are yet to be tested.
Was printing money, handing out freebies (many corrupt) , making money available to friends and rellies for ppe etc a good thing during Covid.

Debatable probably
