Misogyny against Liz Truss

Is anyone else seeing endless misogyny against Liz Truss painting her as ‘thick’ or ‘stupid’? While there’s an acceptance that Rishi is a clever nerd?

I am finding it quite disconcerting. Both she and Rishi Sunak have PPE degrees from Oxford. Yet so many memes about her being dumb. I haven’t seen any attacking Rishi’s intelligence.

Obviously, many many people disagree with them both politically. But that’s not what I am talking about. This is about a specific sort of criticism that really seems directed at her as a woman.

There does seem to be an assumption that Rishi Sunak is clever and able because he is rich, well dressed and male. I don't see anything super smart in his decisions so far, eg Eat Out to Help Out, mass uninvestigated fraud in covid grants. I'll definitely watch him interviewed by Andrew Neil to find out more.
It's hard to get the measure of Liz Truss because I have to wade through snearing men's voices, which are LOUD, and get past her comical Instagram posts and strange speaking manner. But she was the only one who got tough with Stonewall. She's been true to her word to women in her Equalities job and I believe would do more. And she saw how to get Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe out of Iran.

Didn’t she just roll over and pay the money? She’s only done half the job in any case.

Both Truss and Sunak are despicable.

Ken Clarke retired surely. Rory stepped down

Eventually. Johnson removed the whip from them while they were still MPs.

On 3 September 2019, the British Conservative Party withdrew the whip from 21 of its MPs who had supported an emergency motion to allow the House of Commons to undertake proceedings on the European Union (Withdrawal) (No. 6) Bill on 4 September.[1] In the hours after the vote, the Chief Whip Mark Spencer informed the rebel MPs that they were no longer entitled to sit as Conservatives.[2][3] This led to the loss of the Conservative/DUP majority in the Commons.

The suspended MPs included two former Chancellors of the Exchequer (Philip Hammond and the Father of the House, Kenneth Clarke), seven other former Cabinet members (Greg Clark, David Gauke, Justine Greening, Dominic Grieve, Oliver Letwin, Caroline Nokes and Rory Stewart), and 12 others including Nicholas Soames, grandson of Winston Churchill.[

Johnson eviscerated the party. Basically got rid of all those who believe in the Precautionary Principle or 'conservatives' as we used to call them.

I'm not sure what to call the new party. Sort of English Retro Anarchists ?

I do loathe the way the press focus relentlessly on what women politicians wear. They never mention even in passing what a bloke has on, because it's not relevant. But someone with a vagina? It's crucial info apparently.

And yes, interesting how everyone's assuming Liz's sex. It's like we all just know really.

But Rishi's clothes HAVE come under scrutiny for being too nice!

I don't remember anyone in here having a problem with misogyny when The Times printed this.

🤔

Wrong, there was a thread about that.

Getting Nazanin released was a huge achievement. The poor woman had been in prison away from her daughter and husband for six years! None of the Foreign Secretaries before Truss cared enough to grip the problem and negotiate properly with the Americans about how to pay Iran the £393 we’d owed then (for 40 years!!) without breaching American sanctions. Truss made it a top priority and soon after Nazanin was free.

(Johnson’s idiotic remarks even got Nazanin’s sentence extended.)

Saying Truss “rolled over” is incredibly ignorant and yet another example of misogyny against Truss. It would have been much easier for her to ignore the issue like all her predecessors did.

Those saying Johnsons remarks are idiotic are incredibly misogynistic against Boris.

How can stating a fact be “ignorant”? It’s not misogyny, I’d have said exactly the same if a male foreign secretary had done it.

@Blossomtoes Surely you know by now that saying anything mean about Liz Truss or whoever the latest, but they know what a woman is champion is misogyny?

DismantledKing · 02/08/2022 20:44

After the last couple of days of general stupidity and back tracking by Truss, does the OP still think that she’s a misunderstood genius?

ScreechingEchoChamber · 02/08/2022 22:33

Do you understand that questioning the criticism of a person's intelligence doesn't mean you are claiming they are a genius?

nettie434 · 02/08/2022 23:14

Normally I get very irritated by the different standards to which women politicians are held compared to men. The worst example was when Theresa May was criticised for wearing brown leather trousers that cost nearly £1000. Of course the majority of of the electorate could never afford them. However, I would bet a bottle of champagne that those trousers were a fraction of the cost of David Cameron and George Osbourne's hand made suits.

However, I think it is legitimate to comment on how Liz Truss dresses in that nobody can fail to notice the deliberate similarities to Margaret Thatcher. These are designed to send a message to Conservative party members that she is the heir to Mrs Thatcher.

Nadine Dories tried to make a political point about Rishi Sunak's wealth by contrasting his suits with Liz Truss's Claire's Accessories earrings. To be fair, Liz Truss dealt with this very well in the BBC debate saying that Rishi Sunak was very well dressed and she had no advice for him.

I was more disappointed with her comment about Nicola Sturgeon being attention seeking. That is a description which is almost always used in a derogatory way about women or sometimes children. It's no way to talk about a woman who has received many more votes than either candidate will get in the Conservative leadership election.

Titsflyingsouth · 03/08/2022 08:31

I generally see misogyny everywhere these days, which is profoundly depressing.
However, in Liz Truss' case, I will say she does an excellent job of making herself look utterly ridiculous....

DismantledKing · 07/08/2022 14:50

She certainly has been ‘misinterpreted’ a lot this couple of weeks, hasn’t she? She’s thick as mince, she talks bollocks, she’s called out for it, then she claims that she’s been ‘misinterpreted’.
she’s a fucking menace.

Yes another example of the misogyny that Liz Truss has to face. There is another thread on here about how Sunak won't get in because he isn't white. Just another example of the misogyny that Tory MPs have to face day in day out.

Yours D Raab.

To be fair , Sturgeon is attention seeking.

Her cringe-making "Elsie McSelfie" antics at COP26, which she attended despite having no formal remit, and then inveigled selfie opportunities with delegates who frequently looked puzzled as to who she is, amply demonstrated that.

Truss' mistake was in saying Sturgeon should just be ignored; unfortunately politically and legally so far as the UK (unlike the delegates at COP 26) she can't be ignored.

That's quite a remarkably stupid article.

"Ooh, I so want to support a woman, but oh dear, Truss isn't the right sort of woman"

I would never choose a candidate just because they are female and here Sunak is the better candidate.

Sturgeon , of course is milking it for all its worth and proclaiming it's a slight on Scotland (it isn't)
