Anyone watching?

They've all sounded surprisingly reasonable so far.

John Crace in The Guardian had this verdict:

On this showing, the gene pool of talent in the Tory party isn’t even a puddle. A great night for the Labour party, if no one else. [...] Terrifying really. Still, we can only hope that Tory MPs are stupid enough to coalesce around Liz. After all, we’re fucked regardless. So we may as well go down with a laugh.

Is he paid to write that rubbish? I didn't see the debate but that really is an idiotic comment.

He's of course entitled to his own political bias but writing all of them off like that makes him , not them, look stupid.

PearlClutch · 16/07/2022 07:47

I don't know that is choose any of last night's candidates as PM in an ideal world - but we don't live in such, and maybe it would be healthier to have a PM who isn't relying on charm, charisma, chutzpah and populism?

Went right off John Crace when he wrote in his column about cancelling all his opera tickets and getting his money back right at the start of covid. Did he not give a thought to how his favourite opera houses and their staff would survive if everyone demanded their money back immediately? Very selfish and self centred in my opinion. Went off him reading that column and haven’t bothered with his opinion since.

My god who buys The Guardian these days

Such a crap paper

and Labour are their own puddle using his term

PearlClutch · 16/07/2022 07:51

Crace never was very funny - it's just lazy tribal sneering.

Now when I see that please pay us line I’ll just think no you idiots

They went off the ball I while ago

Musomama1 · 16/07/2022 08:02

Kemi/Truss for me. Kemi is direct and comes across very strong, I also liked Truss ideas for paying back Covid debt over longer period.

PM a bit waffly, Rishi manner reminded me of a more assured Ed Milliband, Tuganhat, good speaker but another Lord Snooty type and a bit smarmy.

Hoosemover · 16/07/2022 08:46

I thought Tuganhat came off as the most genuine. Not that is a high bar.
He reminds me of John Major, a bit boring. I think the Tories need boring with the shenanigans that have been going on for the passed six years.

Manderleyagain · 16/07/2022 09:11

I didn't watch the whole thing, but I don't think Kemi was strong or realistic on finances/economy. She showed PM to be being dishonest about the self id policy and it looked like she didn't really like pm. So if pm becomes pm kemi won't be in the cabinet.

Manderleyagain · 16/07/2022 09:12

I don't think it's very sensible of the conservatives to do this on TV. They should have waited til they had 2.

You think?
I found him smarmy and he made me cringe at times.
It all seemed scripted and inauthentic to me.

She seemed very honest to me. That is maybe not always going to be the best policy for a leader, is it? Sometimes politicians need to be ... political. I am pretty sure she has a strong career ahead of her, though.

I think people need to believe a PM is basically honest, so they can trust them to do things right when they actually can't be honest.

My sense is she doesn't feel like she needs to hide who she is and that usually makes a good impression with people.

MangyInseam · 16/07/2022 13:39

Shoot, that should say doesn't need to hide who she is.

LadyApplejack · 15/07/2022 19:55

Wonder if they'll be asked outright if a woman has penis?

Because that is literally the only issue.
God, why can't the transphobes give it a bloody rest already🙄

Musomama1 · 16/07/2022 15:49

Tom Tuganhat has said we need to move on from the Trans debate as it's creates divisions not unity.

Either he is gaslighting concerns of the future of women's rights or he doesn't have a grasp of the issues / thinks them totally unimportant.

Hmmm, sorry Tom, I'm getting turned off here.

Can’t the TRA give it a bloody rest already? If this is such a fringe issue, and trans rights are not important, why are they trying to bully the rest of society into accepting their ideology.

It’s only women really they target

That's an interesting way of looking at it. Is it more about being good-hearted, then? Well intentioned?

Precisely!

darcyesque · 18/07/2022 08:13

Do Conservative MPs actually think Penny Mordaunt will help them retain their seats at the next election? They cannot be that stupid

The talk of her being Labour's next nightmare is obviously coming from her own backers largely through BBC journalists who are lapping it up. Are they her campaign team?

But Labour is feeding it. As if they're afraid of Penny M . Do me a favour

achillestoes · 18/07/2022 08:16

@darcyesque

She’ll help some of them. But she’s not good enough, experienced enough or honest enough. I’ve written to my MP to say I can’t vote for her if she votes for PM, or if PM wins.

Jim123456 · 30/08/2022 20:55

Liz Truss's father is a retired professor of maths. What worries me is that she may not have inherited his intelligence !
If she becomes PM she should make him an economics adviser (mathematicians are usually good at Economics)
